If you heard the recent Conference Call, then you know Octopath Traveler II is currently very much my jam, but eight characters is a large and easily overwhelming cast. So, let's dig into how to make your initial foray as pleasurable and frictionless as possible.

This poor orphan kid had been through a lot, and I'd barely gotten started. The kindly abbot turned out to be a blood-sucking monster that transformed our plucky protagonist into a vampire. His first victim was his only friend at the orphanage, and the nun he relied on turned out to be a Satan-worshipping cultist hellbent on starting the apocalypse.

While you likely never played it and absolutely cannot access it anymore, The Seventh Link captured my young imagination as a kid. To this day, it still informs the things that draw me into a game.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is more than just another Dynasty Warriors spin-off, more than just another hack’n’slash power fantasy. It is a remarkable return to a cherished world, a joyous reunion with beloved characters, a prequel to Breath of the Wild with just enough of its own spin to create a story both surprisingly unique and deeply special. It is hands down my favorite game this year.

Black Book transcends the deck builder genre as it explores a system of magic that is far deeper than a list of cool powers on a timer. Unlike magic systems in other games, the magic in Black Book is replete with a sense of danger. Wielders exist outside societal norms, straddling the line between necessary and distrusted.

Spotlight: Celeste

The pixel-precision platforming to the top of Mount Celeste is a stunning depiction of living with anxiety and depression. It is a beautiful allegory of the quest for self-acceptance and personal integration. I know this game holds enormous meaning for a lot of people, and those stories are theirs to tell. The only story I can share is my own.

Dungeon Encounters is easy. Don't get me wrong, it's quite challenging, but it's easy to learn and simple to opt in, even in the face of other gaming choices. Sure, I could put some time into that beefy triple A I'm covering for the podcast... but why would I do that when I can just dip into Dungeon Encounters?
