While I'm not quite at Sean “Chair-Smasher” Sands' level of rage, I frequently get angry with my games. A challenging game can almost seem like it's taunting you, holding the possibility of success over your head while constantly smacking you in the face with defeat.

Games are nothing if not messages of relentless optimism. If you do the all the right things, play by all the right rules and do what's expected of you, everything will turn out alright in the end. There's very few games that violate this unspoken rule of game development: The good players get the happy ending.

A mustachioed, Victorian-era man has no greater goal in life than eating all the pies in the world. Suddenly he gains the power to travel through time--a power he then uses to steal more pies. Mustaches, pies and time travel: It's like my list of “awesome things” got smashed up into one weird LSD trip (if it had only been cake instead of pie, I would've sworn they were reading my mind).

Well I'm back from my magical mystical world tour - tanned, hungover and not entirely sure of where I've been. Sure I can look at my album of embarassing pictures to fill in the alcohol-induced holes in my memory, but after playing this week's game I'm not sure I could tackle this. Relying on pictures, I'd have to piece together a timeline from static flashbacks.

The laws of physics are the ultimate ruleset. Gravity and momentum have been used for centuries to help create the rules of a game, from sports to dice to racing. One of the more exciting features of video games is that we can now change these fundamental rules of physics. Momentum doesn't have to exert any force at all, or gravity no longer has to point down.

Forced death is something I've had an aversion to ever since the game Nocturne, in which you were forced into a hallway full of doors in which only one door didn't lead to instant death. Given the buggy nature of the game and the long load times, that hallway was not a fun experience.
