There are times when you’re cruising the usual arch-gamer haunts that they’ll flash by. Next to a beautifully thought-out post on the de-evolution of the modern JRPG is a cheeky elf maiden, her glossy Maya model intruding against the carefully considered commentary on that lost art of manga and elipses.

Sweatshop is a game from Channel 4 where you play as a factory manager trying to produce knock-off designer clothing. As you can tell by the title, it’s a game with a clear message that doesn’t pull any punches. There are real-world statistics and quotes about sweatshops between each level that set the game’s argument out clearly.

Fringe Busters is going on the road next month! We will have at least three writers at Gen Con at the beginning of August, and we’re all excited to check out new games and interesting new mechanics. The idea of a typical “god game” is to make the player feel like, well, God. The allure of supernatural control of a digital dominion has fueled a long history of games, from the classic Populous to the upcoming downloadable title From Dust.

The Metroidvania branch of platformers is probably one of my favorite genres. The gradual release of abilities and new areas combined with constant exploration really grabs me in a way few games do.
