I cut my teeth on space strategy games. Master Of Orion was single-handedly responsible for getting me into PC gaming as a kid. The hours I sank into that game probably could've gotten me a PhD by the time I was 12. I think I made the right choice.

Slouching Towards Bedlam

Slouching Towards Bedlam is an interactive fiction game that places you in the shoes of the administrator of an insane asylum in a steampunk version of London. What's not to love about that? The stage is set by an ominous recording being played over a phonograph in a cluttered office. The asylum itself seems fairly normal, for an asylum. Things, however, are definitely not normal.

It's a common complaint that mainstream games tend to wallow in the stagnant intellectual waters of the power fantasies of adolescent boys. Has anyone stopped to look in the sketch books of those pre-men? Florian Himsl has.

While I'm not entirely sure what Canadians celebrate on Canada Day, I'm pretty sure America's Independence Day is about escaping from the machinations of an abusive king. Guess what. I've got a game about precisely that.

Alabaster is a collaborative interactive fiction game – a “fractured fairy tale”. You play as the woodsman, asked by the Queen to take Snow White into the woods and bring back her heart.

Downfall

Downfall is an old-school adventure game of psychological terror. The demo is set in a dream - it starts off with a Scandinavian rock star appearing to you in your hotel room and ends with you enthusiastically digging up a mystery grave.
Sorry if the picture ruins the image of a sassy, loving Aussie woman you'd imagined.

As if I really needed to play a game about struggling to write while trying to write today's Fringe Busters. I'd already played it back when it won the 2008 Interactive Fiction Competition at the beginning of the year, but convinced myself that I needed a refresher.

Dear Esther isn't a game. I'm not even really sure what it is - it's fairly hard to describe. There's no real gameplay or rules. You can't interact with the world at all. The only thing I can say for certain is that it's an engaging experience.
