It's hard to really put into words the feeling I get playing RunMan: Race Around The World. It's got a weird mix of tounge-in-cheek cuteness and genuinely cute enthusiasm. It's insanely fast paced, but you can almost never die.

Feedback in gaming is important. How many FPS games have been stuck in the pits of mediocrity because of terrible weapon feedback? The *ping* noise from Half-Life when you smack something has a lot to do with why combat in that game feels so satisfying.

The power of minimalist graphics in games continues to surprise me. If I could go back in time and ask myself last week what I thought about platformers with Atari-level graphics, I would've said it was an overdone genre. They're easy to slap together, and it seems to be the look people start with when they want to seem edgy or indie. So I would've said thanks, but no thanks.

I am not a fan of sandbox games; I've been burned out on the genre ever since Grand Theft Auto 3. Sandbox games are all about volume. They teach you a few core game mechanics, usually driving and shooting, and then give you massive amounts of space to explore. It's the Sam's Club of the gaming world -- do I really need another 32-pack of standard driving missions?

I'll admit it, I'm a fan of dream logic in games. From Max Payne's drug-induced phone conversations with himself, to Sam and Max's bizarre mishmash of talking heads and office furniture - surreal dream sequences in games can illuminate the character's inner-most thoughts. Characterization is something games have been pretty weak at and dream levels help fill that gap.

First-person shooters have muscularly overdeveloped space marines out for revenge, role-playing games have the angsty, orphaned teen who grows up to save the world, and adventure games have the wisecracking, quirky-but-lovable loser who stumbles into victory at the last minute. To say comedy is a staple of the adventure genre would be an understatement.

Ever since I played The Wonderful End of the World, I've appreciated Dejobaan Games approach to game development. It can all be summed up in one word: fun.
