Diggin' Deep

It must be around 1 a.m. when I finally snap the lid shut on my 3DS. I snuff out the colorful collection of light beaming from the LED screen, and the room goes dark. I don't know what had brought on the collection of heavy, stressful, and worried thoughts to my mind that night. All I know is that I had chosen instead to grab my 3DS, pop the lid, and start chipping away at dirt and rock.

Music is a vital and integral part of my life. It connects for me to something deep, primitive and fundamental. Anything I am doing is improved with a soundtrack. A perfectly built chord progression can and has brought tears to my eyes or a laugh to my throat.

"Are you ready?" my brother asks. I switch out to my sniper rifle, hitting the reload button just in case. Not that I have to. Each time I slay an enemy I reflexively reload, as if it were some part of a ritual for the dead.

I do not regret spending $60 on Remember Me. I enjoyed the combat, puzzles and world design enough that I look forward to diving in a second time. I also do not regret supporting Dontnod, the game's development studio, which believed a female protagonist of color could carry a game.

There's a lot going on — too much, and not enough time. It's not an uncommon situation in my life, and it's the sort of situation that makes it difficult for me to play video games as often as I might like. It's also the sort of situation that makes certain games especially appealing.

I want to make one thing clear right from the beginning: Secret of the Magic Crystals is not for you. Despite the fact it is most likely sitting in your Steam library, and it got there because someone paid real money to give it to you. And the developers of Secret of the Magic Crystals, Artery Studios, are really just fine with that.

I broke out laughing in the middle of my local gamestore. I was standing in line and they were playing the usual mélange of marketing bullshots on the screen behind the counter, and it had rolled around to the newest The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim DLC,”Hearthfire”.

I wanted to hate Pocket Planes, I really did. At first, Nimblebit’s follow-up to its freemium iOS hit Tiny Tower certainly felt like the same species of cute-but-empty time-suck.

The most amazing thing about Johann Sebastian Joust isn’t any component of the gameplay. It’s not the sound design (which is fantastic), the simplicity of the experience (which is fantastic) or the physical folk-game goofiness of shoving your friends (which is fantastic). It’s that it’s political.
