Just got a Steam phishing message from Psych's account

Pages

Dude, your account's been hijacked!

Everybody else, if Psych is on your Steam friends list and you get the same message, be aware that it's phishing spam. And for the love of all that is holy, make sure not to enter your Steam username and password into that phishing site.

Just got the same. Watch out!

We're chatting about it in IRC; Elycion got one too.

Wow, that was fast. I was just starting a forum post about this. DO NOT LISTEN TO ME! I got hacked, I think it is resolved, but be wary.

I was fooled but changed my password and CC info immediately and think I should be ok.

On a side note, I just got way more popular.

Looks like they got Donut.

Don't trust him! How do we know that his GWJ account isn't hacked too and he's trying to lull us into a false sense of security?

On a more serious note, glad it's apparently getting resolved so quickly for you. Hopefully the others that got tricked have similar good luck.

Interestingly, Psych's GWJ profile page lists a steam ID of 'swissmissredux', rather than his actual ID.

Were you able to get your account back? It would suck to lose all those games.

In good news I never trust Psych so I'm wary of all messages from him.

I always ignore Psych as a general rule.

Must explain all the snipes and back stabs.

Good luck fixing this up man.

I got the message and didn't pay enough attention either. Here's hoping my CC stays intact.

wow...

i got it...........

should of NOT click on the site Psych sent and CHECKED what was going on in IRC...... damn it......

Sent steam a ticket already and canceled my credit card.

YIKES.

My account was hijacked. I didn't get anything from Psych but it's hijacked. So if you see a message from me don't do anything.

I'm not aware of what the site is, but if you sent your credit card information, you should probably tell them to cancel it and send over a new card.

It's a good rule.

holy cow you lot are fast!

Probably helps some of you hang out in IRC all day I got the same message but wasn't home to see it until the dust settled. Interesting to see how the hackers tried it, big question I have is how Psych got the privilege of being "patient zero" so to speak.

I got one from Rob_Anybody. Just a heads up.

How long did it took steam to get your account back?

I sent in my ticket...........

Little back story, now I am actually home from work. I was spending the day moving financial records to a storage facility, stopped by my room (I am staying in a hotel for a few months) between loads to check a couple messages. I was just about to head out when I got an odd message from one of my steam friends. This person is not a goodjer, and I have a not so great history with this person. I didn't read the message closely since I was in a bit of a rush, but it said something about a post of some forums. This guy has a tendency to be rather inappropriate and rude, so I was worried there was some crap starting.

I followed the link to what LOOKED like steam's forums. But as my much wiser and more intelligent steam friends knew was a dummy site. Almost immediately after trying to find this message I got a message from steam saying I had been logged out. I tried logging back in, but was unable to for about 5 minutes. When I finally got back in I immediately changed the password, checked my account, and canceled my CC from that account.

I do want to say thanks to everyone who checked to make sure I was alright and that I knew my account was compromised. Again proof that this community is the best, and that I should avoid non-goodjer steam friends at all cost.

Do you use your steam password for email or anything else? You should also change those.

Wait, Psych, are you saying you didn't even enter your login info?

I'm guessing that since it looked like Steam's forums he tried logging in, I don't see how they could get the data otherwise.

Glad it's sorted out Psych.

I might not have said it, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I have to try to protect my idiocy a little bit.

The really devious places tell you that you are using an incorrect password when you try to log in. Odds are you'll get confused and start running through all of your common passwords. That way if an email address is tied to the account they'll have a good shot at breaking it too even if you use a different password like you're supposed to.

sorry, I didn't understand; did you retype your login in password when following the link, or was this infamous site able to extract your login in pwd from your steam session?

if we're talking about the latter, this is quite worrisome.
