Lawn Dart sim night: Il2 1946 - FRIDAY NIGHT 8PM EST!

If you don't have IL2 1946 yet I'd recommend getting it off GOG vs steam. Sometimes when mods are involved steam makes things a little more difficult, and may see your mods as a "corrupt install" or somesuch.

I've been thinking of purchasing this on steam. Now I'm not so sure, from what you guys have been saying, that this is a good idea. I'm running win7 64. Will I have any problems with this?

I love Steam, but I'd really recommend picking this one up on GoG instead. The GoG version is all nicely packaged with the latest patches and will install and run flawlessly on Win 7 64.

Regarding the X-52 profile. I actually haven't used it for IL2 because of some weirdness with the profiler software. You can bind all the axis and buttons from within the game though. Be sure to bind a key to "open bomb bay doors" as this was a feature added by UP2.0. On the X52 I also recommend binding one of the hat switches to trimming elevators and ailerons, even if you use the wheels on the HOTAS. Having the trim on a hat helps to fine-tune it for when you are setting up strafing runs or trying to maximize speed in chasing down a target.

So there's been a rush of new mods for IL2 lately, and was thinking about getting another Lawn Dart sim night together, either here or in DCS. Anyone interested?

I'd be down for som simming. I have both, but haven't delved into DCS yet... and not sure I'm going to anytime soon.

What mods are you talking about for IL2?

IL2 is the daily sale today on steam as well. 4.99 euro.

The hsfx 5.0 mod adds tons of flyables, greatly improved map textures, better loading speeds and online compatibility, so you can use all this fancy stuff with most decent online servers. I remember flying warclouds with goodjers was fairly fun. I'll post more impressions and maybe a vid when I get home tonight.

So I'm reading the comments and have a question as the thread is somewhat old.

1. If purchased on Steam ($4.99) will it run fine on Win 7 64?

it will run fine, but most mods change the executable. the workaround is after the game is downloaded through steam copy the il21946 folder out to another location on your drive, install the mods, and run il2 directly from the folder.

Are there any mods we need specifically to fly multiplayer? Or are they all just eye candy and client side tweaks?

It's all eye candy for the most part, but at 11 years old the sim is quite dated without the mods. I've got 2 copies of the game installed, the UP3 install for single player and certain multiplayer servers that require it (very few), and HSFX for everything else. The 6dof and sound upgrade is worth it even moreso than the visual enhancements. If you do get HSFX 5 though, be sure to download with the torrent as there's a lot of files to download separately otherwise.
