Avowed

Coming the 18th of this month. 13th if you purchase early access.

On Gamepass day one as well.

NDA is supposed to lift 2/13 at 9am (est)

I've got my fingers crossed on this one. Hoping it doesn't end up like Immortals of Avernum.

Since it's available on GamePass day 1, I decided to fork over the $22 and get early access on the 13th.

I am very excited. Obsidian is one of the companies that still has a lot of good will from me. Their games have been unique and well done overall.

Obsidian has never let me down and I am already sold on both Avowed and Outer Worlds 2. Very excited for both games!

A someone who has not much knowledge of this game, I found this an enjoyable watch:

No romance options. I kind of like that. It is hard to please all the people with the options they want.

If I wasn't already going to play the game, that 175 questions video would have sold me for sure.

Very tempted to pay $22.49 for the 5 days of earlier access. I have gamepass already so I am already getting it but it just looks like so much fun that I am not sure I can wait.
$4 a day for early access isn't too bad...
Very tempted.

It’s a 3 day weekend too. Do it……

I thought about it but I don't want to pay extra to be a bug tester.

Avowed OST - Main Theme

Having loved the Pillars games, I’m super excited about this.

Liking the rapid fire questions.

Making me want to play it, but at the same time, I have never finished any of the Pillars games, so I am not sure if this would be another game I pick up and don't finish.

Man, I don't want to be sour grapes here, but this is like some circa-1999 "music written by college roommate of the producer who was into soundfonts" sh*t. Actually makes me want to play the game less.

Compare and contrast with the POE theme, which sounds like high art compared to that bedroom producer Fiverr-sounding nonsense:

I only played about 9 hours of pillars one and never bought pillars two. It is on my list of replay Baldur's gate 3/finish my second run of BG3, play wrath of the righteous, replay rogue trader when all the dlc is out, play wasteland 3 and BattleTech.

Needless to say I doubt I will play PoE one and two before playing avowed as I can maybe two of those massive games per year while also playing smaller games mixed in.

Anyway, if anyone got the early access I look forward to seeing your early thoughts.

Obsidian might be my favorite game studio. So definitely interested in checking Avowed out.
But it also isn't the game I wanted. That would be Pillars of Eternity 3.
Of course the Game Pass subscription I made years ago with the upgrade trick that existed previously, is ending on February 18 :/

Looks like the game preloaded last night. 72GB installation. Will have some first impressions up this evening.

Have the slew of reviews in my queue already. Am very excited about the game, but will likely wait to buy it for a bit. Especially with the whole Xbox games coming to PS5, I might give time to see if this is a thing down the line. Might get it for my birthday in December if there's no news on that being a thing by then.

Avowed - Digital Foundry Tech Review - PC/Xbox Series X|S Tested!

I love the way spellcasting feels in this game.

It looks great and runs shockingly well for a newly released game.

I had initially planned on going for a ranged build as you do in this type of game, but melee combat feels good enough that even after getting a ranged weapon I found myself mostly relying on melee.

Only real complaint so far is not enough loot. I walk into a room and half the time the only loot is a lore note plus maybe a couple destructible crates that probably won’t drop anything. That’s not enough loot.

Really glad they included the lore tooltips during dialogue from the PoE games. It’s been a while since I played them and this world is really noun-heavy.

Highlight of the evening was convincing an elf to date an intelligent lizard.

I am enjoying it but I may have to use a magic build because it looks so fun. Usually I am sword and board but that feels a bit dull comparted to magic.

Avowed: Mage Build - Path Of The Damned

Is there a way to sheath your weapons? It doesn't seem to bother anybody in town but it kills my realism when I'm walking up to somebody with a gun and a sword and chatting with them

On controller at least you just hold the button that switches your weapon set, can’t speak for m&k but it’s possible.

It’s still early, but I’m having a tough time deciding how to play. Like ruhk I’d planned a ranged/ranger build, but magic is so much fun… but I also want to use a sword/shield… or possibly dual weild sword/dagger… or even dual daggers (daggers are sooooo fast)… and I just looted a rifle and pistol and they feel awesome too…

Probably going to end up seeing if there are enough points and skills for a Swiss Army knife build.

I decided to pay for the early access. I have a long weekend, it’s my birthday, and I had money in my Xbox account. So far after 6 hours I’m really enjoying it. The world is gorgeous, locomotion and combat are fun and snappy. I’m running around doing some quests with fish man Garrus. I’m looking forward to leveling up. If basic combat is fun, I imagine advanced combat with lots of skills will be better. The biggest complaint I saw in reviews was the story and characters. Luckily story tends to be the least important thing to me in games. If the mechanics are fun, I feel like I’m making progress, and it plays great, that’s all I need.

I just got a rifle, it is fun. Exactly what you would expect - huge damage but very slow reload. Makes a nice second weapon set

Yeah I’ve basically settled into spear & shield as my primary with arquebus as secondary. The final blow animation for it doesn’t make a ton of sense, though. Shoot… harder!

New series where HarpoMarxist plays Avowed while a voice actor from Avowed plays the game Unavowed

(He had a role in that, right? I'm not making that up?)

Okay so the arquebus sort of breaks combat. Enemies won’t travel beyond a set distance away from their location and the arquebus’ effective range is longer than that distance. You can stand back and shoot at enemies with impunity and they’ll just angrily charge and retreat. Ranged enemies will try to shoot at you but at that distance you can easily step out of the way.
