NFL 2024: The playoffs thread

A+. No notes.

More Rooney Rule shenanigans...

The secrecy over the visit did serve two theoretical purposes. One, obviously, it would preserve the Tampa offer for Coen, which, again, was contingent on the OC not visiting Jacksonville. Two, it allowed the Jaguars to satisfy the Rooney Rule. Going into Thursday, the Jags only had one minority candidate in for an in-person interview—Saleh’s first was in-person. They needed two to comply, so Graham was slated to come Thursday for the other. But the Jags didn’t want word of their plans getting out, which could cause Graham to cancel.

The Jaguars will officially be announcing Liam Coen as their head coach later today.

They successfully excised the Baalke tumor and brought in a desired head coaching candidate. Finally some good news from this clown show of an organization.

But, even more importantly…

The predictions are now 2-for-2!

I almost want to put Pete Carroll for the Raiders since you've got Brady involved and that seems like the kind of move that would come out of that.

2.5-for-3!

I am genuinely excited to watch this play out.

Bring Russ to Vegas. Get Marshawn out of retirement. Resurrect the old Seahawks and watch how badly it doesn't work. Do it.

Get Richard Sherman out of that Prime studio show!

Remind Seattle fans how much they hated the Raiders back when the Hawks were in the AFC West!

Sherm as OC:

This Liam Coen situation is utterly insane.

I thought Bucs fans would be livid Coen was going, but, man, the way he handled it, he's apparently become the most hated guy in central Florida. A rundown of how it happened:

On Wednesday afternoon, with Coen expected to be at 1 Buccaneer Place to sign his deal, efforts by team brass to get ahold of Coen failed. Around 5 p.m., Coen called back to ask Licht if it was O.K. if he came in Thursday morning to sign the contract—rather than doing it that night—and Licht told him that was fine.

Around 10 a.m. Thursday, the Buccaneers still hadn’t heard from Coen, and assistant GM Mike Greenberg had to reach out to him on a contract for another offensive coach that was being finalized. That call went unanswered, too, as did additional attempts by Licht and Bowles.

Finally, at 11 a.m., Coen’s agent got back to the Bucs and informed them that his client was tending to a personal matter. Tampa waited a few hours, and then Licht, Bowles and other staffers tried, again, to get ahold of Coen.

During the 5 p.m. hour, Coen called Bowles and told him he was still dealing with his personal matter. He also told him that things had materially changed in Jacksonville, and that he was going to travel there to explore the opening. Within an hour of that phone call, a Bucs staffer got tipped off by someone in the Jaguars’ facility that Coen was already in the building.

The Jaguars had emphasized to Coen’s camp how important it was that the visit stay under wraps, which could explain why the coordinator kept his plans from the Buccaneers. In the wake of firing Baalke, and in addition to a healthy financial offer, the Jags offered Coen a chance to effectively pick his general manager—an opportunity exceedingly rare for a first-time head coach. In fact, one colleague told Coen that Kyle Shanahan’s hire in San Francisco was the only such offer for a first-timer he could remember like the one Coen had in front of him.

I certainly understand the appeal of an HC job when you're an offensive guy and there's clearly some pieces in Jacksonville on that side of the ball, but you're going to an organization with an owner who has a long history of just godawful decisions, and you're doing it in such a way that you are utterly torching a lot of bridges behind you. I'd have to imagine this kind of thing doesn't exactly help your future in the NFL if the Jaguars gig doesn't work out.

Apparently his kid IS sick in the hospital with an autoimmune disease.

Coen is just doing what he has to do to afford having a sick kid in America.

Texans are firing offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

First thought: WHY?!?

Yeah the offense wasn't as productive this year as a year ago, but just maybe some of CJ Stroud's regression was on CJ Stroud? Not to mention how much time was missed by Nico Collins and Tank Dell (and the questions about whether Tank Dell will ever play again). The team still won the division and a playoff game.

Come back to San Francisco where you're appreciated, Bobby. They're getting the band back together.

I don't think the question was whether Coen has a sick kid, I'm sure it was well known throughout the organization; he apparently told Bowles he had been off the grid because he was with said sick kid, when he was really in that second interview. It's just a bad look all around. I mean, I'm not entirely shocked he left, he was clearly a hot prospect and outside of Shad Clown Khan there's a lot to like in Jacksonville, but, man, the way he did it is really kind of scuzzy.

Compared to the Bucs previous OC -- an alcoholic porn-addicted sociopath who literally wrote a book about it -- Coen seems like a good dude. Definitely not as awful as his predecessor.

Great hire for the Raiders. If you need a team culture reset, he's the best in the business. I'm looking forward to him turning that roster over, his cleanout of the rotten core of the Seahawks was exactly what needed to happen.

I don't know, I think Tampa bears some of that blame. Putting "no more head coach interviewing" strings on their contract offer is kinda employee-hostile and asking for someone to go behind your back.

Compare to the Niners wanting to bring Saleh back and make him the highest paid DC, where they put the offer on the table but allowed Saleh to fully explore his head coaching opportunities first. He didn't have to do cloak-and-dagger visits to keep his DC offer on the table. If Tampa behaved the same, then I'm sure communication between the sides would have remained open and flowing. But they were trying to exert pressure on Coen to stop seeking HC opportunities, and seemingly in violation of league rules.

I do love some shenanigans that coaches/owners/teams play with each other once in awhile. Just joker level stuff all around in this saga

I'm not sure if there's another Pro League besides top end soccer where this stuff happens.

Cowboys+ Jerry your turn to keep the fun going. You can wait until Tuesday~ though so we have something to chew on until the SB.

Everything about Dallas's coaching search since parting with McCarthy suggests that McCarthy really was Plan A, and Jerry was caught off-guard when he turned down what was likely a short-term extension offer.

Some outlets have suggested Brian Schottenheimer is all but a done deal and was going to sign by today, but the lack of any such announcement suggests that's not exactly the case. I wonder if Dallas is hoping for the Eagles to lose this weekend and free up Kellen Moore, and if they're actually going to be patient enough to wait for him if that doesn't happen.

There's precious little activity out of Dallas that isn't one of those two. They interviewed Saleh and Leslie Frazier, which seems to be Rooney Rule box-checking.

Plus, another chapter in the West Coast Rivalry between Pete/Harbaugh The Younger.

I grew up hating everything about the Raiders. The culture, the f*cking eyepatch, the representation of chaos, all of it. Now, Steve Largent, there's a haircut you can set your watch to...

Now that they are so down/out and my own tastes have changed, and, frankly, the state of the world being what it is, I may actually find myself pulling for them. At least against Harbaugh and Payton.

Bring on the Ruinous Powers! All hail Slaanesh!

I'm sorry, I was busy all day, the Raiders hired WHO?

An ex-Patriots head coach, just not the one you’d expect!

I guess Jerry just wanted to wait until dinner time.

Speaking of dinnertime signings, Robert Saleh is now official as 49ers DC.

Billionaires! I mean, what are you going to do, tax them?

At this point, I think Jim Harbaugh might well be justified to ask...
