Welcome folks, and happy “438th Anniversary of the introduction of potatoes to England” week! You may all celebrate by playing a game where one ingredient can be used in all the recipes.

It’s another quietish week as we wind down the year, except for a AAA multiplayer game that could be a late hit.

Marvel Rivals is the big multiplayer game this week. It’s Marvel’s attempt at capturing the Overwatch crowd: a 6v6 co-op shooter where you can choose from 33 heroes and villains, at least for now. The starting roster is an eclectic mix, like in Marvel Snap, and each character’s skills look quite unique to play. For example, Hulk starts out as Bruce Banner and has to gamma rage his way up to Hulking out. The devs made the smart move to present the game in 3rd person, rather than first person, for extra fanservice so you can see all your cool skins. Another new feature, different from Overwatch, is the team-up abilities between specific characters. The beta for this got good buzz, let’s see how the launch goes.

Dog Man: Mission Impawsible is a Dog Man-themed platformer that comes about 3 years too late for my son to be interested. It looks like a good rendition of the Dog Man-iverse, though.

Love Too Easily is the console release of this romance mystery game that blends FMV conversations with pixelated minigames.

The Thaumaturge is console release of a PC game that I gave a GOTW back in March.

Also, this week you will be able to play Civilization 6 through Netflix. The times we live in.

I guess I’ll give the GOTW to the big dog, Marvel Rivals. These days, who knows how it could go. Will enough players assemble on the servers, or will it meet an early endgame?

GWJ Word of the Week

3rd person: A name for a perspective in video games where you can see your character on-screen as you move around. Although this technically could mean any side scroller or 2D game where you can see your guy on screen, it has come to refer to a particular perspective that has become standard in most AAA 3D action games. It’s the one that shows you the back of the player character, from about ten paces behind and slightly above. “Third-person” in this context refers to the person whose shoulders the cameraman is sitting on to get that angle.
