Welcome folks, and happy “179th anniversary of a nationally-observed uniform voting day in the USA” week! I hope the tradition long continues.

It’s the Switch’s turn to shine this week with Mario & Luigi: Brothership. This is a 3D RPG where Mario and Luigi sail to different islands on their boat and explore for combat, minigames, puzzles and collectibles, meeting all the usual suspects along the way. It’s a huge world of stuff to do, it’s got that patented Nintendo sheen, and it’s by the devs who made the original Tenchu. It’s a no-brainer.

Planet Coaster 2 is a sequel that doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it just tries to fix the main complaints of the first game and cram in more stuff. The notoriously finicky path-building system has been streamlined and automated for your convenience. You can also now build pools and slides, and manage all the food stands like in Planet Zoo.

Metal Slug Tactics adapts a classic arcade side-scrolling shooter into a turn-based tactics game. It avoids being a cover-crouching XCOM clone with combat rules that promote more aggressive play: moving further increases your dodge stat (like in BattleTech), there’s stuff lying around that you can blow up for slapstick effect, and teammates can set up free actions between them. The devs did a good job putting the pixel-art Metal Slug aesthetic onto an isometric grid, so it looks like a forgotten PSP game.

Slitterhead has a great key mechanic: possessing NPCs. It’s an action-adventure game, set in a bustling city full of ambient NPCs where you play as a non-corporeal spirit. You can only do things by inhabiting different random bystanders and using their bodies. Did you get hit by a car on the way to your quest marker? No worries, just switch into that other guy and go again. Not all NPCs are created equal, either: Granny doesn’t run very fast, while the fireman carries a handy axe. This all sounds pretty cool, but it’s also a spooky horror game, so I probably won’t touch it.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership gets the clear GOTW. Good luck if you have any time to play it at the moment.

GWJ Word of the Week

Shooter: a video game in which your character’s primary mode of interaction with the gameworld is shooting it with a gun. I once heard on Idle Thumbs that the difference between video games and movies is: for video games, the easiest things to do are calculate bullet trajectories and make explosions, but the hardest is making a realistic scene of two people eating dinner together, whereas for movies, the difficulty is the other way around. Hence why so many games are shooters instead of My Dinner With Andre simulators.

I was thinking of that, and why it never got a remake or sequel
