NFL 2024: The Week 6 thread

My prediction is that the sorry ass Eagles “defense” allows The Groper to throw for 350 and a couple TD’s.

Morals aside, Watson couldn't put those stats up against air.

Yeah. I think it is far more likely that this turns into a false "get right" game for the Eagles defense.

Yeah I don't think the Eagles D is anything special but wow is Watson bad now. After watching the CLE-WAS game it looks like he has one positive play - roll away from pass pressure and throw it to Amari Cooper when coverage breaks down. Just double him and I don't think you'll have any trouble.

As much as I'd like Watson to be out of the league completely, the way Cleveland ownership is being punished for their awful decision with this level of play is pretty awesome. I feel bad for the fans though.

Crazy idea time.

Cleveland is in a bind with this Watson contract. They can't cut him as the dead money would be an extinction level event. They can't keep him on the roster as he is poisonous in the locker room and the idea of him continuing to get paid while the team suffers would lead to a riot if they sat him. Worse yet, they have had to structure deals with other players like Myles Garrett and Za'darius Smith such that void years eat up the majority of their compensation just to be able to afford them. So how do you solve a problem like Deshaun Watson?

Hear me out.

So, what if you could find a trade partner that would take Watson and put him permanently on IR? They would have to be flush with cash and willing to play along, but you would have to give them something VERY substantial to make it worth $200M. Think of this like a Brock Lobster Megadeal. You are paying to get rid of the guy, but you don't want it to be an extinction event like eating the dead money all at once.

Who would be such a partner and what could you induce them with?

Washington.

They already have a QB, they are flush with cap space until 2027, and they desperately need defensive help. Defensive help that could come in the form of Myles Garrett and Za'darius Smith.

Watson wouldn't even need to pack as you could ban him from the facility with instructions to fake a non-throwing pinky finger injury. There would be QB controversy and fans would know that this was all about getting Garrett and Smith into the building anyway. Washington would have their defense and Cleveland would be all set to start over.

Interesting idea, but what you're basically suggesting is agreeing to a move where Washington acquires one Myles Garrett and one Za'darius Smith for the financial cost of about four Myles Garretts. Feels like you could get more bang for your buck spending that money on the open market instead.

Maybe toss in three firsts, a third, and two fourths?

Yeah you'd have to add draft picks for that one. But with Garrett and Smith Washington starts looking like a deep playoff team as long as Daniels is healthy.

Draft picks could definitely help close the gap. But that also complicates things on Cleveland's side. How much does it really help to get the rapist off your books early if you've depleted your draft capital in those years and lack the ammo for serious rebuilding?

At the same time, it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing proposition when it comes to taking Watson's deal. Cleveland could restructure some of that guaranteed salary into signing bonus to retain it on their cap, lowering the amount that would transfer to Washington in a trade, and giving some wiggle room to find an exchange both teams could live with.

So, if there was will on each side to pursue something along those lines, there's a number of knobs they could twiddle.

My favorite (and I mean most hilarious) solution to this was something Nick Wright suggested: trading pics (lets say two firsts and a third) and the Groper to Carolina for Bryce Young.

There is something remarkable about losing so many pics to bring him in and then having to lose more to dump him for the team that was the inspiration for and fictional subject of Draft Day

If only Jerry Richardson was still alive and owning the Panthers, he and Watson would be gropers together.

In any event, we don't appear done with the Worst Deal In NFL History(tm). It looks like it is going to get worse before we are done with it.

Take a dive into the Over the Cap numbers and the Browns have major work to do to get under the cap for the next two years even without cutting Watson. They are effectively $17M over in 2025 without a single roster move and $29M the year after. To make things worse, take a look at the details of their roster and you'll notice that most of the compensation for their anchor players is buried past '27 in void years that further complicate any effort to reduce cap. Garrett alone accounts for $38M the year after his contract expires.

They have already mortgaged their future to the hilt with this year being "the window". Honestly, there is no incremental way out of this hole. This is going to be three hard years in the wilderness starting off with a massive fire sale.

Not like Browns fans haven't had that before. I wonder what Hue Jackson is up to now-a-days.

Remember how the Jets traded for Haason Reddick and then never got him to show up?

Well, his agency, CAA, has dropped him as a client. Guess they were tired of wasting the hours and didn’t see much hope of a commission check materializing.

Surprises me how under the radar that story still is. We had wall to wall coverage of Aiyuk, but when the clock struck midnight, he signed, and he was around the team leading up to that. A guy getting traded and then never showing up is way bigger a deal.

That's the irrelevance that comes with losing.

Has Reddick announced the contract he's looking for? I have to imagine a bunch of teams have contacted the Jets about a potential trade, and you'd think somebody would make an offer they couldn't refuse. Is his ask high enough to basically be a built-in poison pill on any trade negotiation?

Viska finally comes through for me.

CMC, Pearsall, Elijah Mitchell, Drake Jackson, Javon Hargrave, Jon Feliciano, Curtis Robinson, and Talanoa Hufanga (and still Greenlaw too) wasn't enough blood for the football gods? They had to take my Moody?

And now Mason is hurt? How much more blood??!?

I haven’t seen anyone make this comparison yet, but the way his game has developed, the guy Brock Purdy should be compared to in terms of style, attributes, etc is Fran Tarkenton.

UNDRAFTED Matthew Wright hammers one through just as well as any drafted boy.

Twitch chat for TNF moves so fast it could induce seizures.

Mason lives!

But he can’t kickoff into the endzone as well.

Oh cool now Mustapha is hurt, down yet another safety.

I think the real storyline tonight is...Matt Lillard is back?!

That punt muff review being upheld was nonsense

Geno face is definitely a meme

Isaac Guerendo FROM Louisville with the back breaker!

Yessir. That's a Louisville Man right there
