CERN's Large Hadron Collider and the rapid advancement of AI are the two biggest tech fears for me. If there was ever going to be a portal opened to another dimension, its most definitely happening at a CERN facility. AI in and of itself is a promising technology to push mankind forward but obviously there's the equivalent of an arms race between competing companies of varying ethics. I could see a dystopian future similar to the film - The Creator or a situation like Skynet where AI, Starlink and Boston Dynamics are linked up and we end up in a hellscape of armed bots purging humanity from the Earth.
Tech doesn't scare me. The people who control technology do.
Interesting take.
Is it? Lol. Seems pretty normie to me.
Look at almost all modern technology.
AI, Surveillance tech, drones, social media, robots.
All under control of deeply evil people like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Zuckerberg and/or in service to control and repression of populations.
Technology like this I think, would be bad no matter who uses it. The resources needed to create and run these programs means their use and ownership defaults to the shittiest people imaginable
AI could be very useful in the proper circumstances. Take analysis of medical imagery. As opposed to taking a small number, imagine taking a very large number and having an AI analyze them, to then be confirmed (or rejected) by a human technician.
There is some interesting work being done with drones for search and rescue, especially in avalanche areas using drones to search an area, post-avalanche, for avalanche beacons.
Social media has allowed millions of people who thought they were all alone to find out they are not. That there are people out there with the same interests, in the same situation, suffering from the same things, etc
Robots could be extremely useful in remote/dangerous areas for research, SAR, medical treatment.

Yep. There's nothing inherent in the technologies that are destructive. But the absolute worst of people profit from using them in the most harmful possible ways and disaster capitalism and neoliberal economic policies support that.

I fully agree. The possibilities for AI are limited only to our imagination.
Unfortunately, the people using it these days are more interested in making pron.
