Raspberry Pi Projects

I haven't found another thread like this - but the search facility being what it is, that doesn't mean there isn't one.

I figured I would create a threat to post your Pi projects. I have one project that I created a while back, and there are two that I am working on.

The one I did a few years back was to hook the house's heating system's on/off switch to a relay switch attached to a Pi. I think it was a Pi 2 back then, but I can't remember off the top of my head. Then, using python, I created two little programs to turn the power on and off, which I could run via SSH. I needed remote access because I was taking a week off in winter to take my youngest to Disney Land, and I didn't want the dogs to freeze (we had someone come by every day to check on them, feed them and whatnot). Since the house is pretty old and the thermostats weren't great, we tend to control everything manually. It was rudimentary, but it worked great - and still does to this day.

Up next is a remote control car I bought from Freenove. It looks like it can do all kinds of fun things - facial recognition/tracking, following a path, following a light to guide it around, and RC via a phone app. It also has a camera so you can see what it sees, and all kinds of other fun things to play with. I'm going to put it together with my girlfriend's son as an introduction to electronics / programming.

Lastly (for now), I'm very interested in making a smart mirror. It looks like there are a crazy amount of possibilities with that, but mostly I want it to do the following:

  1. Be a mirror.
  2. Voice recognition.
  3. Facial recognition, with appropriate responses.
  4. I would love it to integrate with a fitness program (I use J-Fit), but I may have to dual boot it to an android emulator.

Any suggestions or comments would be very welcome, of course.

Feel free to post your own completed or upcoming projects. I may steal be inspired by what you come up with!

I using my pi for home assistant. I am considering making a portable game station by the drive to do so fell when I got a steam deck. I might do a pi hole. I also bought a rc car to make it pi controlled.

I am most likely to use one for linux, maybe. I will 100% try getting back into linux but I am not sure what I will run it yet.

What do you mean by a portable game station? Like a Steam Link?

No, I mean a portable monitor with a pi, power bank, controller, and mini keyboard stuck on the back. All in one portable game station.

Oh! Sort of like a homebrew Steam deck, then? That's pretty cool. What games will you be playing on that? I assume retro classics / console ports?

Yeah the old stuff that the pi can handle.
