2024/25 Soccer Thread

I know you guys called it Football first, but this is 15 yards and a first down in our football.

Lastly, Everton really need to be relegated and put out of their misery. In the long run, it might be what they need.

I realize that it's a damning commentary on our "leadership" under Moshiri that I cannot find much daylight between clownish advice from a Liverpool fan who apparently wants to see our club go bankrupt, and the actual business decisions being made over the past eight years.

I genuinely don't know what else I would do if I were in charge and wanted the club to fold, that hasn't already been done.

Despite your rather pathetic childish whining about the whole situation, I'm really quite sympathetic for most Everton fans as, after all, you didn't ask for any of what the club has brought upon itself. I've made that quite clear over the last season or so, but don't let that stop you from jumping to your own, incorrect conclusions.

Let's be very clear here, everything that's happened to Everton football club is solely down to Everton Football Club, who broke the financial rules that they quite willingly signed up to and voted for, and when caught can do nothing better than resort to outright "whataboutism" in response. You don't let someone caught red handed breaking the league's financial rules off just because someone else is facing 115 charges of it. I'll give you the Chelsea hotel loophole though, that should never be allowed to stand.

And before you start, there are many other clubs who've all managed to stay within the rules, quite often to their detriment. If they can do it, so can Everton. They haven't broken these rules, and quite a few of them never got the chance to vote on them in the first place.

That's where my sympathy runs very thin.

The soccer thread! The only thread that gets more testy than D&D. Or at least I don't check others that do.

Joao Cancelo linked with Saudia Arabia. Didn't realize he was already 30. To put that into perspective Raheem Sterling is 29..... Who probably should also consider Saudia Arabia.

I wonder if the GDP of Portugal might actually go up by extension of all the players who are ending up in Saudia Arabia. You have to figure some of that money makes it back home.

Errr... no.

Guys, come on. Can't we all just come together and agree to hate Manchester United?

Merino officially announced.

Nketiah to Palace for £25m.

Fabio Viera loaned to Porto. I guess there's still a chance he shines there and comes back but not typically how these things play out.

Ramsdale was supposedly going to Wolves but that is off.

Can't complain at all really. Maybe lacking some attacking depth. 5 quality players for 3 starting spots with 1 being Jesus who is already hurt. Don't think they sort that out in this window.

Cristiano confirmed he'll continue to play for the national team. What a relief.

Ronaldo confirmed to have booked in his hip replacement and will player manage the 2038 World Cup.

It'll be good content for his YT channel. Just a collection of free kicks being sent into orbit.

Ramsdale to Southampton.

I was dubious when they brought in Raya as it seemed like luxury to upgrade at GK.

It's working out though. Proving me continually wrong about the Arteta+ Edu era.

Raya isn't allowed to get hurt now though.

Just £10m for Chiesa? Was he in the last year of his deal? I feel like Liverpool's got perhaps a few too many options in attack now.

He just recently scored one, so we can look forward to him not stopping until he's in the grave (and even this might not stop him).

He’s backup for Salah as we are shipping Ben Doak out on loan. It feels a pretty good deal to me now, at first I wasn’t sure. So long as Chiesa injuries are in the past. Time will tell.

We’ve picked up the Georgian Goalie Mamardashvili as well. Only we’re letting Valencia keep him for a year first. You’d assume Kelleher will find someone to give him regular game time before the window closes on Friday.

No comments on the absolute madness that was the Champions League draw? I sure hope the games are more exciting than the draw...

Been at work but it was the first automated draw wasn’t it. I’m scared to look at football twitter as the conspiracy theorists will be out in force.

Really happy with the teams we got. We'll get defo-pumped in 4, and probably-pumped in a couple more, but we avoided the usual teams that issue out the 5, 6, 7 goals against for us each time.

But the draw itself was highly confusing as a viewer/listener.

If you didn't catch it live:

Well, personally, this draw was hell for me and I hate this format even more.

Lukaku to Napoli.

He's gonna manage to finish with the fans of every big club in Italy despising him somehow.

Burying my head in the sand and pretending it didn’t happen.

Toney to Saudi. Sad. But I can't really blame him, he'll collect a colossal check and be set up for life.

“What we are seeing more and more are players on ridiculously inflated wages, who are impossible to shift because clubs who would otherwise want them simply can’t afford to pay them without upsetting other players they already have,” writes Todd Boehl Rick Harris. “No wonder the Saudi Pro League has been welcomed with open arms by clubs who have made utterly stupid signings and are now desperate to get underperforming players off their books.”

Very true, and it seems the vibe these days is very much focused on PSR, squad clearing and wage demands. Nobody seems that bothered about what the players might actually bring to their new club (which, for deadline day deals, is usually not that much).

However, uh...

Come again?

AHAHAHAHAHA UNITED WILL GO AWAY TO MOURINHO

Nailed on Fenerbache win, that.

I was only half joking about the Saudi deals moving other countries GDP. The wages are actually insanely nuts.

That said I bet part of the draw to go play in Saudi is very advantageous tax situations. I'm sure Ronaldo has hired the best accountants on how to shuffle his wages + gold bullion from Saudi Arabia to Switzerland.

I don't think I care either. There is enough soccer talent in the world that I don't really think the EPL for example is degraded by the Saudi league. I guess you could make the argument on how this all filters out to the other leagues that are not the EPL. But it is not going to last anyway. It will probably last longer than when China was doing it but there's going to be a sobering moment when they look at the situation and go wait how much are we paying all these guys?

I have a friend that disagrees because they are actually that rich but I don't know. There has to be an eventual threshold where they look at the situation and are even like damn. We ain't that rich.

I'm all the shocked meme faces over the Sterling to Arsenal loan.

I'm not sure if it's real yet. Seems pretty low risk really. If he plays the way Arteta wants he's good off the bench. If he doesn't then he won't play much at all really.

We also didn't mention the Noni Madueke thing, which, imho, was hilarious from front to back.
