2024/25 Soccer Thread

Arne Slot becoming the first Liverpool Manager since Gerard Hollier (I think) to win their opening Premier League game.

Very much a game of two halves - Ipswich came on very strong the first half, but faded a bit in the second in the face of a much improved Liverpool performance. So far, so good I’d say.

First this century apprently.

NBC need to download a facepack.

Jaime Vardy is back!

Knew Leicester was back but wasn't sure if Vardy Party was also.

Connor Gallagher to Atletico. Chelsea refuse to balance their squad numbers though so Joao Felix comes back the other way. I really hope the Todd Boehly era never ends.

LOL

For f*ck's sake, he scored already.

Just looked at the game stats.

Vardy mocking Spurs fans is just pure gold.

The official Premier League Instagram account posting it though. Ouch.

US money plays part in Ipswich’s rise

Portman Road has a nostalgic vibe, right down to the 70s font used on the stadium’s main stand, but Ipswich, despite being a League One club two years ago, fully embrace modernity. These are no church mice. While Ed Sheeran has a minority stake, the majority of the business is owned by an investment consortium, ORG, which manages funds on behalf of a multibillion US pension pot, known as the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System. In March, a private equity fund, Bright Path Sports Partners, bought a 40% stake. The pastel suits and aviator shades of Stateside business were visible in the executive boxes, a contrast to the blue-shirted fervency of the home fans. A good day was had by all, barring the result, especially during an excellent first-half display. Kieran McKenna and his players offered hope for the season ahead. Theirs is a huge task but the ownership has the wherewithal to support them. John Brewin

Love the story, but cannot help but have my hackles raised anytime I hear the words "private equity."

Also, rather absurd that James Milner is A.) still here and B.) still playing well.

Also, if Ivan Toney's much-talked-about BIG MOVE ends up being to a Saudi club... well that'd just be depressing. Although the Saudis appear to be the only ones willing to pay what Brentford are charging.

(Relatedly, I don't think Newcastle should splurge the English premium on Guehi, but they've also got the money.)

Maresca confirming that if Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling want to play football, they are better off leaving Chelsea.

Edit: Ooof. He’s basically come out and said that if a player isn’t in ‘his’ squad of 21 players, then he doesn’t care about them at all.

I reckon he’ll be out the door by the end of the month. Talk about a toxic environment.

Then why sign 500 PLAYERS?

I’m guessing because Todd Boley really hasn’t understood how sport works when it’s not America.

Even baseball only has a 26-man roster!

It's just so unhinged. Like, literally, look at their First Team Squad list on Wikipedia.

You could almost field an entire NFL team (53 players) with Chelsea's "first team."

Sterling going from City to Chelsea and now to (reportedly) Palace or West Ham is one hell of a fall-off though.

Also, Gundogan's one-year Catalan vacation appears to be over and he's coming back to Citeh.

I don't think I've ever seen this level of shithousery from a Saints player.

Love to see Adam Armstrong in the PFA Championship team of the season! I look forward to both of his goals this year!

Let us not be remiss and forget the Brexitball highlight of the weekend (start the video at 5:52).

Football. Heritage.

I was watching the highlights on Saturday and when the first challenge went in after he'd already had a yellow I thought "that might be a problem..." and then the second challenge happened.

If you told me he'd placed a bet on himself to get sent off I wouldn't discount it.

Merino to Arsenal is done.

That's probably a wrap for them with a bunch of bodies rumored to still be leaving to help balance the books. Don't think we are trying to pull a Chelsea. Ramsdale + Nketiah still to go.

Looking good especially after that first game. If Saka is going to whip in perfect crosses with Havertz getting his head on them, fingers crossed. Maybe City will only win this year by 1.

For American sports, this is groundbreaking -

‘It’s important we attract the best’: inside the NWSL’s groundbreaking deal that abolishes the draft

The new CBA will roll out gradually, with all restriction on player agency notably being lifted immediately.

While drafts have historically been a cornerstone of the American sporting landscape, European leagues have long embraced a system in which players have significant control over their careers, marked by free agency models and robust transfer regulations. This framework allows players to negotiate contracts, choose their teams based on preference of location and salary, and move between clubs with relative freedom, provided they adhere to established contractual requirements.

“It was really clear that there is a global labor market for talent, and it was also clear that we weren’t operating in ways consistent with global standards around player movement in particular, and player agency,” Berman said.

By embracing a free agency model, the NWSL positions itself as the first professional league in the US to adopt this global standard. The free agency system will build on the more limited framework introduced in the 2022 contract, which allowed players to become free agents only after a set period with the league.

Next month, the NWSL will eliminate the draft entirely. Berman described the shift as “monumental,” highlighting that players will now have the freedom to choose their entry into the league based on their preferences rather than their years of service. Not only will this foster a competitive environment among clubs hoping to attract the best talent – crucial for a sport once plagued with sexual harassment and abuse claims – but it reduces any confusion or red tape for overseas players looking to join the NWSL.

“It’s critically important, in order for us to be the best league in the world, that we are attracting the best players. And some of the best players are here in the US, and some of the best players are international, and we want to be a league that is a destination for those best players, regardless of where they come from,” Berman said. In adopting a model that aligns with the rest of the world, she said they have now “removed those self imposed obstacles to create a clear runway for the best players in the world to be able to come into the league”.

I'd say the MLS should fairly obviously eliminate the draft, if only because the NCAA system very obviously does not create elite talent in the U.S. (I'd argue it barely creates League Two talent).

Like, i'm looking at Wikipedia, and the last drafted player who appears to have been selected for an MLS Best XI team was Miles Robinson.

In 2017.

I forgot the MLS had a draft. Was Freddy Adu part of that at one point?

Such an American sports thing shoe horned in.

I don't know why they keep it. It's purely for NCAA talent and a NCAA all-star team would get relegated from the National League, and it wouldn't be close.

John Textor admits Crystal Palace snub has led him to Everton takeover

John Textor has revealed that he attempted a total buyout of Crystal Palace but the offer did not “induce a response” so he now intends to proceed with the sale of his 45% stake in the club in order to complete a takeover of Everton.

The American became the third party to be granted a period of exclusivity by Blue Heaven Holdings, the company that owns Everton, last week and has been on Merseyside this week for further talks with the owner, Farhad Moshiri. Under Premier League rules, Textor must sell his shares in Palace before being allowed to conclude a deal and the Guardian understands he is considering two offers, having invested about £150m in the south London club since 2021.

But in a statement posted on his website on Thursday evening, the 58-year-old, who also owns the French club Lyon as part of his company, Eagle Football Holdings, claimed he had made a last-ditch effort to buy out the other three Palace co-owners – the chairman, Steve Parish, and Textor’s compatriots Josh Harris and David Blitzer, who all own 10% stakes in Palace. “It is true that we made an offer to buy the remaining shares of Crystal Palace, at a valuation that far exceeds levels of prior investment,” wrote Textor. “We did so with a strong belief that Palace has become a much more valuable club, since 2021, and we respected our partners enough to offer fair value, regardless of circumstances.

“It is also true that our offer did not induce a response, and we believe that our Palace partners have the same desire to remain in ownership as we once did … so our efforts to sell our interests resumed. We have a significant number of parties active in our process, we have received strong indications from qualified buyers, and we believe strongly that we can complete a sale of our interests to continue moving forward with the next community we hope to serve, embrace and enjoy.” Textor also confirmed he was keen to “pursue a relationship with the Everton club and community”.

Palace were valued at £624m by Forbes in May, although the situation is complicated by the fact that Textor’s stake entitles him to only one of four seats on the board, with Parish retaining the deciding vote.

It has been a busy week on and off the pitch at Selhurst Park, with Joachim Andersen completing his £30m move to Fulham and Jordan Ayew has joined Leicester after Palace agreed an £8m fee for the Ghana forward. They have shown an interest in signing Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea, although his £350,000 a week salary would be a major stumbling block.

So... did he buy Everton or nah?

I am convinced that if Raheem Sterling wasn’t already at Chelsea, they would sign him.

David Raya with a save of the season entry already.

Saliba might be the best CB in the world. If you disagree he's trending that way and is already top 5.

That was some game.

Just sat watching MotD. I’ve love to know exactly what it was that pissed off Eric Ten Hag so much when it comes to Jadon Sancho. ETH clearly loathes Sancho. Whatever he did it feels more than a bit petty at this stage.

Also, Arteta. Is it me or is he even more unlikeable than Mourwhino ever was?

Lastly, Everton really need to be relegated and put out of their misery. In the long run, it might be what they need. That clanger from Pickford though was highly amusing.

Everton will somehow stay up by like, two points again, and then we'll do this again next year unless someone competent buys the club.

Three points for the Cottagers though! And a home debut goal for Emile Smith-Rowe!

Love them both.

Was actually thinking the other day that Arteta might become the next lunatic manager. All for it if he delivers the trophies.

Chelsea played so well today they even lifted Ipswich Town up a place on the table.
