2024/25 Soccer Thread

A new video has emerged of David Coote snorting a white powder that clearly isn’t Cocaine (on the advice of my lawyer) while working on Euro24.

His goose is well and truly cooked, both literally and figuratively it would seem.

People don't like to have a quiet end to their career. No, they gotta turn it into a an entire fireworks show.

There’s a level of stupidity to his actions that really do limit any sort of sympathy I can generate to be honest.

Clearly I’m bias - given the Manager and team he’s got a beef with - but Klopp is very far from the only ref who’s had a go at a referee for some very poor decision making during a game. And Coote is far from the only ref to make such questionable decisions, but to come out and say what he did - while being filmed - he’s the only person responsible for what’s happened.

Yes, refs are human and mistakes do happen. Contrary to a lot of the discourse over all, I actually think a majority of fans know and accept that. The problem is the PGMOL’s utter refusal to accept any responsibility for what’s going on, nor ensure any of the premier league’s referees take any accountability over what they do. A light slap on the wrist followed by a week or two of refereeing in the Championship isn’t going to improve anything.

The risk here is that this isn’t the end of his career. There are enough fans now angry enough that if he’s assigned a Liverpool game to referee, there’s going to be a riot, and there are enough fans from other clubs who’ll probably not accept him either.

I know I’ve ranted about it before, but the PGMOL is horrifically unfit for purpose. It’s a major part of the problem.

Ben White to have a minor knee surgery.

Sounds like he could be back fairly quickly but ya. Not Arsenals season on the injury front.

We haven't have a Rodri level out for season blow but a rotating in and out of players has definitely had an impact.

Could very well be one of those years where they linger in all 4 competitions but end up with nothing to show for it besides way too many games played.

New, shocking revelations.

Lyon provisionally relegated to Ligue 2 amid financial struggles

Lyon have been banned from making any transfers in the January transfer window and provisionally relegated from Ligue 1 at the end of the season because of financial mismanagement

The National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) handed down the punishment to the team owned by American businessman John Textor after a hearing on Friday.

If Lyon are to avoid being relegated to France's second tier by the DNCG at the end of the season, they will need to demonstrate a much healthier economic outlook.

As part of the punishment, the club is forced to announce a limit on the budget forecast for player salaries, as overseen by the DNCG.

The early days were uninspiring a couple times, but I don't think this England side will lose another game under Carsley.

I reckon there were more Irish people than English in Wembley for that game.

Mind you, once the penalty was awarded and the sending off it was all over as a contest.

Etymology question for our UK friends:

Why is it called "shipping" goals? Like, how did that become the descriptive verb?

I’m fairly sure they covered this on QI once, although somewhat indirectly. It might have been the ‘There’s no such thing as a Fish’ podcast instead.

Given the UK’s maritime history, there are a lot of English phrases that evolved from various nautical activities or associated words - ‘I like the cut of his jib!’, ‘stay the course’, that type of thing.

I don’t think it’s any more complex than that I’m afraid. A ship that’s sinking is said to be ‘shipping water’, and that’s more or less the context. It also be as simple as ‘shipping goods’ to someone who wants them.

The FA finally got around to looking at Bentancur's comments about Son.

Bentancur banned for seven matches.

Thought I was in the matrix this morning and there was glitch when I saw that headline. He did it again? Oh no it just took that long.

Better late than never I guess but need the speediest system they have.

I think I understand how leftist fans of the Brazilian National Team felt during the Bolsonaro years.

I mean Archie Gray won't be on that list next year. All those mintues were for Leeds last season, don't think he has much this year.

Oh sure, but some of these kids are gonna be like what Reece James has become at 25, I guarantee it.

Finally, the Premier League put out a video aimed directly at me.

The third here... you might have to consider starting a fight. Only kind of kidding.

Spurs reaching peak Spurs.

As for that Guardiola? Clearly a fraud. He should be sacked.

Giving up four goals? At home?

To Wolves?

This is a particularly Spursian season for Spurs.

Spurs scholars are having a field day.

Leicester City have sacked Steve Cooper after just 12 games in charge.

You can only assume that they have someone else they regard as ‘better’ lined up.

I see Rashford has briefly revelled in the fact he’s no longer managed by Ten Hag before reverting back to type again.

Finally, Liverpool playing badly but winning. Although I think Southampton rather handed the first 2 goals but all in all being 8 points ahead at this stage is seriously impressive.

Willy Gnoto! what a mad game the Championship - Swansea score 90min to make it 3-3 only for Leeds to go up the other end and steal it 4-3.

Check the standings in Serie A. Now that's entertainment.

Salah's making grumpy noises about not getting a contract.

City winning, but still not looking convincing. Has their method been found out?

Also, is Eddie Howe under pressure by now? Like, the new rules are definitely preventing hte PIF from breaking the league as much as they'd like to, but their ambition was not to finish 4th, then 7th, and now be 10th and be a pretty obvious mid-table side.

Neeeeeeeeeeeevermind.
