Welcome folks, and happy “133rd Anniversary of the kinetoscope” week!

On 20 May 1891, Thomas Edison displayed his kinetoscope for the first time, to the National Federation of Women’s Clubs. The kinetoscope was a precursor to movies, as it was a device where the film is run through a box with a peep hole, so only one person at a time can watch the movie. The displayed movie was of a man bowing and taking off his hat, shown at 46 frames per second, which modern consoles struggle to emulate to this day. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you can stare through keyholes.

I guess after this week, we can call this month “one-AAA May”.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is an Xbox ‘sclusy by Ninja Theory. They have described it as an “indie AAA” game. This seems to mean AAA graphics (it’s in Unreal Engine 5) with an indie marketing budget (there has been zero promotion of it). Microsoft bought Ninja Theory after the first Hellblade sold over a million copies, and is now hanging it out to dry. The game itself looks like standard blockbuster, third-person action-adventure fare, mixed with horror game elements due to the story focus on the protagonist’s psychological state. If this were a Sony game, you’d see it plastered across the sides of buses for weeks.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord Remaster makes me feel like Old Ben in Star Wars: A New Hope when he hears the name Kenobi. I’m usually not that nostalgic around games, but early PC games can get me—I’ve recently been playing a random $4 adventure game from PSN just because it looks like Quest for Glory. Anyhoo, this is a remake of the first Wizardry, the 1981 game that put party-based RPGs on the map (which was not provided at the time). This remaster is the same game, but with a graphical overhaul as you’d expect. Plus, the game will draw the map for you now. Beyond that, what else has been upgraded? Do you still have to reroll your characters over and over until you get a decent stat spread? Is there a hotkey for “Fight Fight Fight Parry Parry Parry”?

Another remake this week is Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This 20-year old GameCube game is being polished up for the Switch. Quality-of-life improvements include the Partner Ring, which allows for easier switching between partners, and the usual help and accessibility features that Nintendo adds in; they do not want you to get stuck in these older games.

DAVE THE DIVER - GODZILLA Content Pack is some Dave the Diver DLC that is time limited—from May 23, it will only be available for 6 months, apparently to help Godzilla celebrate their 70th birthday. Please don’t tell me you end up serving Godzilla sushi at the restaurant.

Crown Wars: The Black Prince is an XCOM-alike set during the Hundred Years’ War, in 14th-century France. You manage a squad of differently-classed soldiers during battles, then head back to your castle for lashings of upgrades. Battles involve using cover and high ground, and you can choose whether to just kill enemies, or take a risk to capture them for bonuses at your castle. It’s going for fun rather than pure historical accuracy, so you will see Beastmasters, who can unleash a variety of animals on people, and Alchemists who throw grenades.

Doki Doki AI Interrogation is a game that integrates ChatGPT. Bleurgh! You’re a cop interrogating a murder suspect and the suspect’s answers are provided by ChatGPT. It comes with a disclaimer: “The gameplay may be affected depending on how overloaded the ChatGPT servers are. If there are any changes applied to ChatGPT services operated by OpenAI, please be informed that this game service may be suspended or terminated without notice.” Double bleurgh!

Paper Trail is an indie puzzler where you fold the screen like a piece of paper to solve the myriad puzzles on offer. It’s like Mad Magazine fold-ins on steroids.

While I will be checking out Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord Remaster just to see how much I remember, the GOTW goes to Crown Wars: The Black Prince. This has been on my radar since it was originally supposed to come out late last year. Folks have their favourite genres, and XCOM-alikes are one of mine. I’ve recently been playing one set in WWII France, why not go back 600 years for another one set in medieval France?

GWJ Word of the Week

XCOM-alike: Describes a bunch of gameplay features based on Friaxis’ XCOM: Enemy Unknown remake from 2012. Broadly, it means you control a squad of soldiers on a grid-based map in a turn-based system, with an action economy based on being able to move and perform certain actions per turn. Usually your soldiers will have a “to-hit” chance that can be impacted by terrain features like cover or elevation. Also, your soldiers will be of different classes, with different special actions they can perform. So far, so D&D. The other part of the template is that between battles, you have a home base where you can spend the rewards you earned in your last battle, or recover from the beating you took. The home base allows you to heal, train, or recruit soldiers, as well as upgrade the base and modify or buy equipment. Usually there will be a timer between battles to provide a limited window for home base activity.

What makes it particularly XCOM as opposed to a variant of D&D is that your squad will change: you can lose soldiers in battle and need to replace them, or have a B-Team you need to send out when your A-Team is injured. However, many players get attached to their A-Team, especially if they have customised them to resemble their friends or favourite sportspeople, so they circumvent this mechanic by save-scumming until they land that 12% shot that stops their Heavy from getting merc’ed.

Comments

Very excited for Isles of Sea and Sky this week, a game I backed on Kickstarter a long time ago!

It looks pretty sweet!

Now that we're past embargo I can safely say this Wizardry remake is utterly delightful.
