Monkey Island was one of the first games I played. I still have the box with a floppy disc rattling around inside it. One particular puzzle, when you’re seeking permission to visit the sword fight trainer, was the first time I felt extremely delight when solving a puzzle.
Stan the boat salesman was a standout. At one point, as he moves around the harbour showing you boats you might want to buy, he stops in front of what is just a mast and a battered prow sticking out of the water. “It’s a fixer upper!” he says. When I’m out on rambles and see a farm building missing a roof and possibly a wall or two or a wheel less car or, on one memorable occasion, a rusting tractor chassis and engine in the middle of a field, I’ll say, “It’s a fixer upper!” No one ever gets the reference.
