Felix “Moogle House” Threepaper
Welcome folks, and happy “312th Anniversary of February 30th” week!
On 29 February 1712, King Charles XII of Sweden declared that the next day in Sweden would be 30 February. This meant that in 1712, the Swedes got a 367-day year year but no extra holidays. Sweden was transitioning from its unique Swedish calendar to the more commonly-used Gregorian calendar. It would take until 1753 to fully align its calendar with England and Europe, but even then Sweden had to go from 17 February to 1 March to catch up. You may all celebrate by playing a game that you can exploit by resetting your system’s clock.
There’s one game taking up the whole horizon this week: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Every other big game has steered clear, save for the obligatory Warhammer release.
People talk about the sliding scale of game remasters, with the low end starting from “they did the bare minimum to make it playable on new systems”. There needs to be a special category at the very, very high end just for what Squenix is doing with Final Fantasy VII in remaking the original game as a trilogy. It’s like rebuilding an ancient castle but adding a whole bunch of extra cool towers and keeps. Rebirth sits somewhere beyond any mere remake but short of a full reboot.
I feel particularly unqualified to sing its praises because I’ve never played a Final Fantasy. Obviously, it continues the story from last year’s Final Fantasy VII Remake but the ‘Rebirth’ element comes from going open-world, which looks like Ubisoft-style map-tower exploration. On top of that, there’s more signature side activities and mini-games than ever. The visuals are jaw-dropping, whether in-world or during the dazzling cutscenes. As for combat and skills, it builds off of the system in Remake and for more detail, you’ll have to watch a YouTube video.
The Final Fantasy VII remake series is doing justice to arguably the most iconic entry in an iconic game series. It’s a feast for fans and a clear GOTW. Enjoy!
GWJ Word of the Week
Mini-games: Short, self-contained games that are included in larger games. These can be side activities, like races or deliveries, or actual other videogames. The Yakuza and Final Fantasy series are renowned for their expansive collections of mini-games, however the mini-game was perfected in 2015 with Gwent in the Witcher 3.
