NFL 2024: The preseason pre-draft thread

Crazy to imagine but I think only Saquon and maybe Jacobs gets a multi year deal. Otherwise I would guess that list ends up a bunch of 1 year deals.

The real question will be does KC end up signing Swift to a deal.

Happy Franchise Tag Day to all who celebrate.

The Panthers kicked things off by tagging DE Brian Burns, who's the one Panthers defender who anyone else who's not me has ever heard of. (D-lineman Derrick Brown is good, too; you should definitely know him.)

The Panthers now officially have all the leverage. Burns gets paid $24/yr (he wanted $30M). If someone else wants to hand him the bag, the Panthers will get two first-round picks.

I don't think anyone else is going to want Burns for that price (but who knows, right?) Burns is coming off a relatively unproductive season by his standards, partly because the opposing team never had to throw the ball in the second half of games and partly because he played hurt (ankle, elbow, concussion) for most of the year.

The Panthers could get two first-round picks in a trade for Brian Burns? Gee, that's an offer that's never happened before.

*awkward silence*

Franchise tagged players:

Tee Higgins, Cincinnati Bengals WR
L'Jarius Sneed, Kansas City Chiefs CB
Brian Burns, Carolina Panthers EDGE
Justin Madubuike, Baltimore Ravens DT
Antoine Winfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers S
Josh Allen, Jacksonville Jaguars EDGE
Jaylon Johnson, Chicago Bears CB
Michael Pittman, Indianapolis Colts WR

I mean, if the Patriots wanted Winfield super-bad and signed him so we'd get a pair of first and could take Marvin Harrison Jr. plus their high pick next year I'd be sad but you know . . .

The Panthers shouldn't ever be allowed to touch first-round picks, much less think about them.

Farewell, Slant Boi. The Saints are expected to release Michael Thomas. Doing it as a post-June 1 cut means they'll save $1.2 million on the cap this year, so he'll only have a dead cap hit of $11 million.

This will get the Saints "down" to only about $16 million over the cap.

Uh, Mac Jones to the Jags? Why?

Edit: Looks like the Jags are sending the Pats a sixth-round pick so Jones can begin his new career as a long-term backup.

At least the JAX beaches are nice. And if Mac plays golf, he's in the right place.

I bet this QB controversy in JAX is going to bring Legion back.

Trevor Lawrence: "Mom, can we have Sam Darnold?"

Mom Baalke: "No, we have Sam Darnold at home."

*Mac Jones sits quietly in corner*

Looking forward to a contingent of Jax fans wanting to go with MacCorcle.

You know. The ones that wear Crimson other days of the week.

What time is it? IT'S TIME TO BAKE. Baker back to Tampa for three years, $100 million, half guaranteed. A year ago, I dreaded Baker Mayfield as Bucs' starting QB. Now, I'm so damn happy.

Can I just extent a big thanks to Matt Rhule for messing things up so badly this could happen? One of my favorite Panthers ever.

Edit: It's realistically a 2 year, $60 million contract; it's $30 million and $20 million guaranteed the first two years, $5 million each year in incentives, and a non-guaranteed $40 million in the third year. He'd indicated there'd be no hometown discount, but he could have probably gotten more somewhere else I'd think.

Russell Wilson to sign with the Steelers. My dad and his daughter's father-in-law have something to talk about finally other than their daughters marrying each other.

As someone who still hates the Steelers, this makes me absurdly happy.

My partner was going through a social media post announcing Wilson and the comments were just dunking on Kenny Pickett. Because obviously social media is so f*cking toxic.

They funny part to me is Pickett could easily still start the season or get put in by the 2nd game because non hot take. Wilson is seriously washed from our recent sample.

The best non toxic comment I saw was.

Steeler country, let's weld

The Steelers go to Denver this year, and I will absolutely become a huge Steelers fan that week. Russell Wilson may be an incredibly unlikable person in so many ways, but if I could somehow watch him drop five TDs on the Broncos and have the camera keep showing increasingly pissed off Sean Payton it might be the highlight of the entire season.

The Steelers go from one talented QB who can't make throws to open receivers to another one I see. The Trubiski to Russell comparison has a lot of common data points.

I guess I can't blame them too much. It isn't like they have a lot of capital with which to make a big off season move at the position. Kirk Cousins isn't enough of an upgrade at the position to risk getting into cap trouble to acquire. No worth making a trade for is on the block for anything the Steelers could afford. And no one is going to be available at #20 that would be worth neglecting other gaping roster holes for.

This leaves them roughly where they were last season with a team just good enough to get within sniffing distance of the postseason, but no realistic chance of advancing.

Yey Franchise Tag!

In the biggest news of the day, the Bucs have re-signed kicker Chase McLaughlin. Look out, NFL, Tampa is putting back together a superteam team that squeaked into the playoffs at 9-8 and managed to beat the corpse of what used to be the Eagles. Totally unstoppable.

Happy Free Agency Feeding Frenzy Day!

Christian Wilkins to the Raiders, 4 years, $110 million, $84.75 million guaranteed
De'Andre Swift to the Bears
Jonathan Greenard to the Vikings (Danielle Hunter looks to be moving on)
Tony Pollard to the Titans
Gabe Davis to the Jaguars
Josh Jacobs to the Packers

Still no Kirk COVID signings yet.

Edit: JFC, literally as I hit post I flipped to Reddit, and Cousins' agent just posted Kirk is going to Atlanta on a four year deal. No details yet, but, well, a four year deal for a guy who will be 36 on opening day who's coming off an Achilles is definitely a thing.

Dead to me. Didn't want him back for that money but to Philly? Dead to me..

Starting NFC South QBs in 2022:
Tom Brady
Baker Mayfield
Andy Dalton
Marcus Mariota

Starting NFC South QBs in 2024 (projected):
Kirk Cousins
Derek Carr
Bryce Young
Baker Mayfield (but for a different team)

Hmm, with Pitt and ATL off the board, I wonder where Fields will end up. Denver, New England (then take MH3 at the third pick), Washington (Kliff likes him some mobile QBs, then Washington trades #2 pick for a haul cause their whole teams sucks), Gmen (Jones sucks and I believe they can get out of his contract after this season so Fields plays this year on his lower salary before it bumps up)... anyone else? I can't see Chicago trading him to Minnesota.

Hot take: Fields to Cleveland as the Browns try to unf*ck themselves and accept their sunk cost.

Is he going to change it to "Y'all like that?"

Multiple sources have reported Brian Burns is being traded to the Giants, and I am totally not going to laugh at whatever compensation the Panthers get for him.

Panthers will get a second and a fifth. Not sure if those picks are for the NFL draft or some other sport. Hard to tell with this front office, which also let Frankie Luvu get away and announced that they're cutting a starting safety and (probably) their starting center.

Maybe their new guard (Robert Hunt from MIA) can play both ways?
