Welcome folks, and happy “595th Anniversary of the Battle of the Herrings” week!

On 12 February 1429, during the siege of Orleans in the Hundred Years’ War, 4,000 French and Scottish troops attacked a supply wagon headed for the besieging English army. The wagon was full of herrings and defended by only 1,600 men, but the attackers were driven off and did not get the herrings. So they named the battle after the herrings. It wasn't that noteworthy, except for being the last battle to happen there before Joan of Arc showed up. You may all celebrate by playing a game with an overly long tutorial.

It’s a strong week. A few of these could have easily made last week’s GOTW.

Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft is a remaster in the game preservation sense (if you caught the recent discussions on Conference Call 904). It’s bringing these 1990s games to all modern systems, even the Switch. While the graphics have been upscaled, the original gameplay and level design has been preserved. You can switch between original and upscaled graphics, and between the original tank controls and modern controls.

Similarly, Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a remake that brings a classic 2004 Game Boy game to the Switch. A whole bunch of extra animations and instrumentation have been added to make it playable on screens big or small. There’s bonus levels and difficulty modes, including a casual mode to help you ensure progress.

Dragon Quest Builders is a port that brings its Minecraft RPG gameplay to PC, with all the DLC and a free-build mode.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is an actual new game and the latest from Don’t Nod. It’s basically Don’t Nod doing The Witcher: a hefty, fantasy Action-RPG with all the trimmings: combat, crafting, skill trees, quests. You play as 2 characters that you can switch between, as is the style of the times. There’s special investigation powers to solve quests and Don’t Nod’s trademark interesting story choices. It is certainly a promising formula: does it all come together?

Smalland: Survive the Wilds is a survival sim where you’re ant-sized little pixies in a forest. Up to 10 of you can swarm around to cause havoc: crafting, fighting bugs, and eventually unlocking Gecko mounts. The combat looks pretty simplistic, but the graphics do a good job at making cockroaches and spiders feel like major bosses.

Ultros is a Castlevanioid painted in psychedelic colours where you are stuck in a time loop that erases your upgrades. You can grow plants to make shortcuts to upgrades and do other things to unlock permanent upgrades, but it requires a lot of repetition of the levels.

Skull and Bones is the pirate ship MMO that Ubisoft made out of Black Flag. It’s all about your ship as you sail the Indian Ocean, working your way up from a tiny ship with naught but a spear, hunting and gathering resources to make a proper boat with cannons. That’s where the real fun begins: the arcadey ship combat, as you take missions to work your way up the piracy chain, upgrading and replacing your boat, gear, and crew. While there’s a single player tutorial and quest chains to get you started, the focus is on multiplayer co-op. In single-player, you can pop up a flare to ask nearby players for help. There’s also an opt-in PvP. The arcade features of combat include being able to spend resources on boat instaheals, fast travel, and respawn locations to keep you in the thick of it.

As for the GOTW, Skull and Bones looks pretty and brings back fond memories of Black Flag, but I’m not sure how long my sea legs are. Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a great way to re-experience a classic game. So is the Tomb Raider collection. But I have to give it to Don’t Nod for looking like they swung for the fences with Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden.

GWJ Word of the Week

Tank controls: A system of controlling your character where pushing up on the left joystick on a controller moves them in the direction they face, down reverses them, and left and right rotates them around. It was a feature of 1990s games on PC and console when games wanted to present you stages from fixed angles. It found its way into many genres: adventure (Grim Fandango), survival horror (Alone in the Dark) and action platforming with Tomb Raider. It’s like trying to steer your character with the controller for a $10 remote control car and, like most of my efforts with remote control cars, you spend a lot of time crashing into the scenery. Nowadays, with bigger processors and better ideas about twin-stick controllers, 3D games will let you move in the direction you press the joystick, and even swivel the camera around and move where the camera is facing, both of which are way easier, and tank controls are generally now considered a Bad Idea.

Comments

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden has grown on me the more I’ve seen. I’m now interested in checking it out if impressions are positive from other people.

Mario VS Donkey Kong? Hmm I may have to get that, silly fun!

Trivia: when they released the remastered version of Grim Fandango, there was an achievement for completing the game using the original tank controls.
