2024 - 12 Month Pile Program

Oh, is it that time already? Welcome to the 2024 thread! IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/party-popper_1f389.png)

IMAGE(https://media.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExeDlpeG11bmFrYWQ4Y213ZzcyNDdpZm1xcmJsZHo3MGw1b2o4bzR0YiZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw/OvHQJPRASxgOhkPhaB/giphy.gif)

Remember that each of us track our progress differently, but kind of with the same idea. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/microsoft/319/light-bulb_1f4a1.png) It's about recognizing what you have, being okay with throwing out titles that don't catch your interest or that you will never play, and trying to focus on what you already have; there's no hard and fast rule. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/woman-judge-medium-light-skin-tone_1f469-1f3fc-200d-2696-fe0f.png)

Reminder that this thread and the idea it incorporates aren't about IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/stop-sign_1f6d1.png) stopping IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/stop-sign_1f6d1.png) you from buying games. Let's be honest: that'd be a fool's errand. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/rolling-on-the-floor-laughing_1f923.png) It’s about trying to enjoy what you have. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/smiling-face-with-smiling-eyes_1f60a.png)

Time for a quick refresher. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/whatsapp/326/woman-teacher-medium-light-skin-tone_1f469-1f3fc-200d-1f3eb.png)

IMAGE(https://media.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExbmkxbTI5b24xMXNmcW01YTFjY3NneHgxeW84N3B0YW5hem96dHR0NSZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw/hlalLzRAPw930YY6lW/giphy.gif)

First, YOU decide whether or not something belongs on your pile; This isn't a collection to showcase IMAGE(https://emojipedia-us.s3.amazonaws.com/source/skype/289/framed-picture_1f5bc-fe0f.png), this is a list of games that will require your attention sometime in the future, even if that time is just spent deciding that you will never get to a certain title. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/source/microsoft-teams/337/watch_231a.png)

Secondly, just lumping them all together doesn't help anyone. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/samsung/349/books_1f4da.png) Yes, make a list, but more than just that. You aren't buying groceries IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/twitter/348/shopping-cart_1f6d2.png), you're committing your time. An invaluable, and ever-shrinking, resource. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/samsung/349/hourglass-not-done_23f3.png) So, use some tools to help you understand what you may be in for. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/samsung/349/hammer-and-wrench_1f6e0-fe0f.png) From sites like HowLongToBeat.com that tells you what to expect, time-commitment wise, to critical acclaim or notoriety, which may adjust when and where you aim your sights. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/whatsapp/326/telescope_1f52d.png)

Third, You don't have to just sort your list alphabetically. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/input-latin-letters_1f524.png) Sort it by desire, zeitgeist, system preference, or anything else that you think makes sense to you. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/google/350/mirror-ball_1faa9.png) You're not building a web application, you're curating a very specific list of games. IMAGE(https://emojipedia-us.s3.amazonaws.com/source/skype/289/sparkling-heart_1f496.png)

Remember, it's your list, which means it's your rules. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/google/350/straight-ruler_1f4cf.png) Wanna jettison a game because you don't like the box art? Do it. Does a 40 hour game seem like too much of a commitment? Boot it. Does it require 3 hours of boring at the start to get to the "good parts"? Nix it. If a game doesn't respect your time from the jump, then just be done with it. Does it mean you "wasted" money on it? No, not necessarily. The cost is your money plus your time, the latter of which is likely the most valuable. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/source/microsoft-teams/337/stopwatch_23f1-fe0f.png)

Fourth, throw games off your pile like people throw coins into a fountain. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/rocket_1f680.png) You're not out to impress anyone. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/facebook/327/trophy_1f3c6.png) This isn't about monitoring your every move, waiting for your next post to see what titles have been kicked to the curb. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/google/350/woman-detective-medium-light-skin-tone_1f575-1f3fc-200d-2640-fe0f.png) It's about you being ok with saying "No" to commitments that are too much, and "Yes" to those that delight you. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes_1f601.png)

Games should be fun. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes_1f604.png) Enjoyable, even. Not wasting your time, feeling like a second, third, or fourth job. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/woman-construction-worker-medium-light-skin-tone_1f477-1f3fc-200d-2640-fe0f.png) Those are signs that you need to walk away. Eject the disc, delete it from your hard drive, or put it into a "Jettisoned" folder on your system. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/whatsapp/326/litter-in-bin-sign_1f6ae.png)

Finally, some games, you will be so excited for. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/whatsapp/326/star-struck_1f929.png) Can't wait for the release. The arrival bears so much excitement. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/astonished-face_1f632.png) People are going wild. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/partying-face_1f973.png) The zeitgeist is off the charts! IMAGE(https://emojipedia-us.s3.amazonaws.com/source/skype/289/chart-increasing_1f4c8.png) And you just.... bounce off it. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/neutral-face_1f610.png) That is okay. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/samsung/349/ok-hand_medium-skin-tone_1f44c-1f3fd_1f3fd.png)I'm giving you permission to not like every game, to walk away without feeling guilty. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/smiling-face_263a-fe0f.png) Regardless of everything going on, some games just will not be for you. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/woman-shrugging-medium-light-skin-tone_1f937-1f3fc-200d-2640-fe0f.png) Even though you bought it day 1 digitally, you are allowed to be done with it before noon. IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/whatsapp/326/woman-running-medium-light-skin-tone_1f3c3-1f3fc-200d-2640-fe0f.png)IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/whatsapp/326/dashing-away_1f4a8.png)

Repeat after me, “This process isn’t about others, it’s about what I enjoy. This is all about me.” IMAGE(https://em-content.zobj.net/thumbs/240/apple/325/princess_medium-light-skin-tone_1f478-1f3fc_1f3fc.png)

  4. April

Hey I finished one game already.

Geez. Guess I should actually try to play a game then?

Have finished 3 games so far in January. Off to a good start.

I'm gonna drop so many games. Might finish some too, not sure.

No games finished in January. Thanks in part to purposefully just starting Xenoblade Chronicles 1, continuing to play a few games on PC to fill in the gaps, and a handful of days being distracted with Palworld on Game Pass, which I may already be 'done' with. I've mostly been sticking to my intended path, though. I knew the outset of the year would be slow in terms of completions. Unexpectedly, I'll probably be adding Prince of Persia The Lost Crown to my pile some time this year.

Early January Report~~

Added:
Balder's Gate 3 (Steam)

Finished:
(nothing)

Made Progress In:
Metroid Dread (Switch)
Alan Wake 2 (Epic)
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch)

Kind of a nothingburger month in terms of playing/finishing games. I beat the 3rd temple in TotK and likewise made a little progress in Metroid Dread and Alan Wake 2. I did just get back from seeing the Nier Orchestra concert in Los Angeles which was amazing. So fun to hear one of my favorite videogame OSTs live and see the original singers/composer/game director on stage.

2024 Goals:

1. Continue my journey through some video games series. Apparently this is something I have enjoyed. I am almost done with Metriod with Dread (may or may not pursue Other M and Prime Hunters at a later date), gleefully in the middle of Resident Evil (3 Remake, 4/Remake, and 8 on the plate) and up to my neck in Yakuza games (Yakuza 6/7/Gaiden are next in line). I could also finish my way through Metal Gear Solid and Kingdom Hearts but it's been so long that I feel like I'd have to start over.

2. Don't be afraid to chop games if they don't click or if there's a low chance that I will ever get to it. Only play games that I'm really excited to play.

3. Lastly is a goal that isn't directly related to games but I need to take better care of my mental/physical health. It's hard to play games or do any other hobby if your basic needs aren't met.

Omg this this this this sooooo much. Please take care of yourself. <3

Heck yeah January! In terms of gaming, 2024 is off to a great start.

Ramblings
I was away for most of the month, with only access to my New 2DS as a gaming device. Even then, I barely played anything during that period.

Now that I'm back, I'm just going from game to game randomly. I was hoping to get Jusant done before the end of the month, but I got roped back into more Monster Hunter World instead.

Also played some Earth Defense Force 5. I cannot think of a better example of "so bad, it's good". Story is barely there, it looks like it was made for the Dreamcast, the voice acting is terrible (possibly on purpose?), gameplay is dead simple, and yet I'm having a blast.

Hello 2024, time for the January report.

Backloggery is at 0 for 2024. With the upcoming move, and the medical leave, it's been... yeah. I did manage to play three chapters of Darkside Detective 2, which was nice. I'll probably wrap that up in February. Picked up Touken Ranbu Musou again in order to finish that last achievement I was missing and unlock all bond conversations. Still yelling at DMM to give us Omokage in the base game already. Cowards. I've also been doing more NecroDancer daily runs as well as the odd Unrailed game with friends. So I am gaming again, and that's what matters, even if I'm not clearing the pile (yet). I want to, I do, not because I have to, but because I like to, but I'm not there yet.

January report:

Added: None

Finished: God of War Ragnarok - Finally!! This was a good game but took me forever to finish

Dropped/Set Aside for Now: God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC - I fired this up after finishing the main game and it is some strange combination of God of War and Rogue Legacy? I might come back later as there is apparently some story aspect to this DLC but not something that I am interested in playing right now.

Played: Nobody Saves The World

After finishing God of War Ragnarok, I'm planning on playing some shorter games. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is coming soon and at some point, I'll pick up the new Prince of Persia game. Otherwise, plenty left to play on the pile!

Well, January is coming to a close and I certainly had a productive month from many a standpoint; game-completion-wise I managed to knock a few off, a bit more than I expected, though one game I started in December remains unfinished and still targeted for February.

Beat/Completed:

Knightin'+ (PS4)
Aeterno Blade (3DS)
Darksiders II (PS3)
Tinykin (PS4)

Added:

Elderand (Switch)
Saga of the Moon Priestess (Switch)
Blossom Tales II: The Minotaur Prince (Switch)
Harvestella (Switch)
The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories (PS4)

Played (Extensively):

The Legend of Dragoon (PS4): Getting through the First Chapter of the game took quite longer than expected. From reading a couple of guides without spoiling anything, it seems the following chapters are much shorter as a whole.

Octopath Traveler (Switch): Have spent a ton of time since December with this one. Have all 8 characters, have them leveled between 25 and 38 and am halfway through each of their Chapter 2 story portions. I expect to beat the game sometime this century. Possibly in March.

The Baconing (PS3): Deathspank's final act and possibly Hothead Studios' last good game (they really didn't have very many and most ended up being mobile stuff). I went in trying to do this on Hard but found that the changes in mechanics from the previous game to this one just aren't clicking as well with me. There is a heavy emphasis on blocking, the timing thereof and how it directly damages both close-up brawler enemies and projectile shooting baddies; the timing is off for me and it seems a bit unreliable, which doesn't bode well given how hard enemies hit even on easy mode. I realize this is very likely a "me" problem, so I'll just truck along and see how far I can get.

Little Noah (PS4): Former mobile roguelite turned console game. Susprisingly fun and addictive. Digging the simple yet charming story and character designs. May play it here and there and, if I'm lucky, beat it before 2024 is through.

Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS): After having lost my original save - unfinished - last year thanks to my mini SD card failing, I resolved to start anew and, well, it's taking a while. I haven't had as much luck this time around with recruiting demons, so that sucks. Thankfully, the game is still as fun, if a little tougher.

Some quality backlog progress for the first month of the year. March and April will likely be taken up by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Dragon's Dogma II, so I'm trying to make as much progress as I can before then. I'm also playing Severed Steel for the Action Game club and replaying the Half-Life series. Considering that, I'm doing pretty well. Final Fantasy XIV is something I'm only logging in once or twice a week for, so it's not taking up all my gaming time. Birth by Sleep is a nice meaty RPG with a playtime to match, so it'll feel good to get that one knocked out next month.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch)

Well, I was really tested on my last goal for 2024 since I got covid for the first time shortly after posting that. Still trying to get a better hold of my mental/physical health but the will is there. I played a TON of Tears of the Kingdom this month and I truly think I'll finish it this weekend. Metroid Dread similarly feels close to the end so I anticipate finishing that in March as well. What I'm struck by this month is how all 3 games that I'm playing are absolute bangers. And I feel like I have dozens of games in my backlog that are of the same quality so I really don't feel the need to purchase anything right now.

  • Homeworld 1 Remastered - Mostly useful as a comparative baseline for the HW3 demo. But I'm still pretty meh about RTS in general.
  • Against the Storm - And maybe I just don't like survival city builders?

February schmebruary. I had soooo much time... Or so I thought. But I did enjoy that time I had while gaming. I purchased more stuff and beat considerably less than I intended.

Beaten:
Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch)
Dear Esther (PS4)

Added:
F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch (PS4)
Aeterna Noctis (PS4)
Granblue Fantasy: Relink (PS4)
Persona 3 Reload (PS4)
Blasphemous II (PS4)
Pentiment (Switch)
Astlibra: Revision (Switch)
Figment (Switch)
Figment 2 (Switch)

Played:

The Legend of Dragoon: Played a good bit. I'm at what would be the 3rd of 4 discs, so, near the end.... Ish.
The Baconing: Taking me longer than I thought. Got a bit distracted, but should be beating it within the next few days. Then, it's off to the races on what I might play before the drop of Shadow of the Erdtree.

The Backlog

Finished
1. Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Final Mix
2. The Last of Us Part II

Started
1. Thirsty Suitors

Added
None!

It says I finished 2 games on the backlog, but I'm very close to finishing Thirsty Suitors, so it feels like 3. This feels pretty good to me, especially considering I also replayed Half-Life and made some progress in other games along the way.

Alas, this will likely be the last of my backlog progress for the next couple months, though I'll try to wrap up Thirsty Suitors soon. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Dragon's Dogma II are gonna take up most of my gaming time in the next couple months, so that won't leave a lot of time for backlog gaming. Still, four or five backlog games in 2 months, plus other games on the side, is pretty good for 2024 so far.

Your backlog list is nice.. did you make that file?

I did!

What a great file!

Whoops, kinda forgot about the February report.

Added:
None.

Finished:

  • The Darkside Detective : A Fumble in the Dark (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)

Dropped:

  • Cities: Skylines (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - too many fiddly bits, I just wanted to zone out and click mindlessly

Played:

  • Touken Ranbu (Browser/Android) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/mastered.gif) - Yay new HRA Valentine's chocolate event!!
  • Assassin's Creed Odyssey (uPlay) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - It's bene long enough since Origins that I'm thoroughly enjoying this one.

Remaining games: 52 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (51 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Games): 1 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 1 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 2
Est. remaining hours: 721.5 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (694 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Est. total hours): 10 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 28 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) + 12.5 played IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 50.5

Backloggery is at 2 for 2024. Yay for progress, even if it's minor!! I briefly considered picking up streaming again, but then I remembered I always have to wait until the kids are fast asleep before I start and then I go stupid late, so nope, nope, nope.

Well, I didn't hold as firm as I did in January, but I could've done worse to my wallet:

Games Beaten '24:
Jan. 11: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Jan. 16: The Case of the Golden Idol
Feb. 17: Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Games Bought '24:
- Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 Enhanced Editions - Switch (There was a sale, BG3 was on the brain, and I was weak)
- Octopath Traveller 2 - Switch (This most recent GameStop sale brought it down to $30, so the trigger was pulled)

Potential Purchases March '24:
- Dragon's Dogma 2 (a bonus check just came in so this looks even more likely...)

This Year's Aspirational "To-Do" List:
- Baldur's Gate 3 (Finally in Act 2!)
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses (I need to renew my momentum on this)
- Rogue Legacy 2
- Persona 5 Royal
- CrossCode
- Octopath Traveller 2

Thus far, the beaten/bought ratio holds firm at 3:2 for that >1 I crave. This upcoming month I'll be setting my sights on more Fire Emblem & BG3, but DDog 2's pull grows by the day.
