Felix “Suckle Nandwich” Threepaper
Welcome folks, and happy “208th Anniversary of the Second Treaty of Paris” week!
The Second Treaty of Paris, signed on 20 November 1815, marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars after the defeat and abdication of Napoleon. While historians often wonder what the battles of the Napoleonic Wars may have looked like, we can safely say that at no stage was a slow, orchestrated arrangement of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs playing as a soundtrack. You may all celebrate by playing a game that has a really annoying trailer.
There might be a lull in the new releases this week, but the end-of-November sales at digital and brick-n-mortar storefronts will ensure that the dollarydoos keep flowing.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous - Lord of Nothing is like a text from an ex when you’re back from honeymoon. Just in case you weren’t completely satisfied with BG3, here’s a substantial piece of DLC to remind you of some CRPG that you used to know. It’s the second-last DLC, and will wrap up the “Through the Ashes” storyline. It features a new frozen map area, new companions (including an android), and new enemy types. But that’s not all! The DLC will also come with a major patch that adds in a bunch of quality-of-life improvements like new character portraits, new subclass archetypes, spells, feats, and rebalancing. For example, the notoriously-borked, poison-inflicting Assassin class becomes useless pretty quickly considering the plot increasingly pits you against poison-immune demons. The patch adds in a feat that allows you to ignore poison immunity and a bunch of other traits and tweaks to keep a poison build viable to the end.
In Stars and Time is a black-and-white, turn-based RPG where you and your party are stuck in a time loop. You are brought together to bring down an evil king, but just when you are about to succeed, something goes wrong, the clock resets and you are kicked back two days earlier to do it all again. Each time you repeat, though, you can use what you’ve learned from the previous run. Your friend’s memories become equipment and combat is literally rock-paper-scissors.
Alina of the Arena is an indie roguelike game that mashes up the mechanics of two indie darlings from years past. It’s got the deckbuilding from Slay the Spire mixed in with the turn-based tactics of Into the Breach.
Knuckle Sandwich is a turn-based RPG by a solo Aussie dev that’s published by the publishing arm of the devs who made SUPERHOT. It’s an RPG Maker-looking game set in a modern day city that harbours a dirty secret. It’s got an Undertale vibe with its dialogue and the way combat is resolved by minigames that are unique to each enemy.
Evil Diary is a straight-up 2D shooter with retro, pixel graphics and a retro, 80s metal soundtrack.
SETTRIS is Tetris where you arrange the blocks inside a puzzle board, rather than as they are falling to the ground. There are 2 game modes: playing with or without a time limit.
Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection is a 7-game bundle of 8-bit and 16-bit games that originally came out on NES, SNES, and the Gameboy. Apparently, these are classics; I’ve never heard of any of them before. Resurrecting old fossils, indeed.
RE:D Cherish! is a romance visual novel that’s all about arriving at an Atlantis-like paradise island that promises freedom for all.
This is a good week if you like games that feature an old-fashioned text scrawl. I have to admit, I am intrigued by the DLC and patch for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, but then I remember that when I finished that game, I was done with it. The combat is much fussier than BG3—less the joy of seeing what your abilities do, and more a strict procession of debuffs and buffs to reduce the enemies’ ridiculously high ACs. Like in the original Baldur’s Gate games. So, I’ll give the GOTW to Knuckle Sandwich for telling a quirky, funny tale on a shoestring budget.

Comments
The games for Nintendo platforms were by Ocean, so their soundtrack is pretty good; the actual gameplay is merely average for the time though.
The Genesis side-scroller was a fairly big deal for the time, but I have some doubts about it holding up all that well.

Worldless has such a strong visual style. I hope it’s gameplay is as good as it looks.

In Stars & Time released yesterday and has some pretty incredible early reviews.

Oh nice. I wish listed that after hearing Rebecca Valentine gush about it a few weeks ago on a podcast. I didn't realized it was out already.

I will be gushing about it on next week’s CC. It is terrific.
