The GTA VI Hype-All Thread

The first trailer is nearly upon us.

Genuinely insane how much of a hold this game has managed to have. Rockstar got away with releasing the same game over three different console generations and, from the response online, you'd think Jesus himself was returning to earth. The staying power is insane.

I mean, I'm gonna play 6 though.

First trailer on December 5.

Really amazing how much of a vicelike grip this series has on gaming, I don't think anything else comes close.

I'm interested. I love Rockstar's open worlds and I can't wait to see what this one looks like. I am wondering what sort of impact Dan Houser leaving the company has had on the story/writing.

Cool? Sure I am interested but the hype around this is silly.

The release of new GTA games have always been hyped like crazy since GTA3. In the lead-up to San Andreas there would be weeks-long coverage over even the slightest update. I remember seeing entire articles just about the weight/exercise mechanic.

I'm guessing a lot of folks here just don't pay attention to GTA, but GTAV has been a huge (and constant) cultural touchstone for 10 years. I'm not surprised at all that the hype for the next one is huge.

GWJ is obviously not representative of the larger gaming culture (which is why I've been here for an embarrassingly long period of time), but yes, I think the hype cycle for GTA 6 is going to blow any other game in history out of the water.

Consider how much staying power 5 has had. Rockstar has managed to milk that game for literally a decade and three separate console generations, and it still retains a large, dedicated active player base (it's the 9th most played game on Steam atm).

If you think it's silly now, just wait, it's going to be absurd.

Not sure if it'll be yanked, but it looks like the trailer is already out

I don't think it'll be yanked because Rockstar themselves posted it after the leak.

I'm excited for the game especially since it's in Vice City and GTAVC will always be my favorite GTA. I just hope that it's a worthy single player game because I don't care at all about the multiplayer stuff.

Speaking of GTA VC, what's the best way to relive it these days? Is the remastered version that's on Steam any good? I hear it's a port of a mobile port so that does not sound great but I'd much prefer modern controls.

The GTA remastered editions have had some very public issues, but Rockstar has pretty much made it so unless you happen to have a hard copy of the original game, they're the only way to play the earlier GTA games.

As for the trailer, I mean, I knew I was going to buy it anyway. But we're probably, what, 2 years out? Cuz this has gotta be a Holiday 2025 release, right?

Yeah, I've not been into a GTA game in years, but this looks pretty interesting.

Vice City was the last good one in my opinion.

This looks awesome. PS5/Xbox only for now. Guess we'll have to rebuy it on PC down the road.

I look forward to the new female protagonist being blamed for the decline of Western civilization.

Looks astounding. I didn’t play much of GTA 5. I’m interested in playing this one.

Presumably in-game as well given the dystopias Rockstar likes to create.

I'm cautiously 'in' for this. There's always been a streak of sexism at best and misogyny at worst in GTA, and the trailer suggests room for optimism on this. The decision to finally feature a female protagonist seems to build on the excellent work creating multi-dimensional female characters in Red Dead Redemption 2.

This also looks like another fantastic technical achievement by the developers, who seem to consistently move the art forward with every release.

Like many others here in their 50s, I have a deep and abiding love for the original GTA Vice City, because of the 80s setting and the stonking soundtrack (somehow, I still have a sealed copy of the CD box set). So a return to Miami is very appealing.

My only sadness is that the Miami-based games are set almost 40 years apart, which will probably limit the opportunity for Easter Eggs.

Please god, though, that there are no missions as brutally consequential as 'Demolition Man'...

I am most confident about this. After GTA V and then RDR2, I have no doubt that GTA VI will be an astounding technical achievement, with more attention to detail than any game prior.

Also, frankly, I'm actually fairly positive about the female protagonist of the game. I thought Rockstar absolutely hit it out of the park with Sadie Adler, so if they can pick up from there, they'll do great.

Good call on Sadie Adler! Her story arc is one of the highlights of RDR2. I would have welcomed some Sadie-focused DLC had it been offered.

In fairness, Rockstar managed to create a stack of good female characters in RDR2. I thought Edith Downes was an interesting side character, with a really strong storyline too.

GTA VI Confirmed Next-Gen Only, Skipping PC At Launch

Rockstar Games has confirmed that, at least at launch, the company’s long-awaited open-world crime sim, Grand Theft Auto VI, will launch on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 only, with no mention of a PC version.

In a press release published on December 4, shortly after the company was forced to release the GTA VI trailer early after it leaked, the studio confirmed that GTA VI won’t be available on PS4 or Xbox One consoles, something that most people assumed even before the trailer’s release. But after the trailer was put online, it became clear this game wasn’t going to run on those older machines.

Very rarely do I do this but F them for not releasing for the PC alongside next gen. As a gamer who is horrible with a controller and FPS, this news is weak.

At least it tracks with GTA5 and RDR2's release - those got PC releases eventually, and with the amount of money to make, I'm sure GTA6 will as well.

I suppose we can also update the thread title now

I mean, it could just have been a placeholder for now.

And yeah, PC gamers, unfortunately, will likely be waiting another year after release to play, if GTA V is any indication.

Yeah, disappointing, but pretty much Rockstar's MO when it comes to PC support. Consoles first, PC later.

They're already transvestigating her.

Also, I was initially a bit lukewarm on the "back to Vice City/Miami" setting, but that was a while ago. Now I actually think it's a perfect idea, few cities in the country are quite so parodically emblematic of the U.S. and already fairly GTA-like.

This is going to be insufferable once again.

Personally, I'm more concerned with the game reproducing my two pet-peeves with Latino fictional characters: (1) they're always related to drugs and crime --and I'm not sure what else I can expect from Grand Theft Auto--; (2) they speak in English but intertwining random Spanish words ("Let's go, chica, we have to visit my abuela because it is her cumpleaños.") when no Latino person ever talks like that in real life.

AND too many non-white people, I should add.

Why not make a guaranteed several millions by delaying it a year or two for the double dippers.

Because if V's any indication, they'll make it anyway.

Oh a female protagonist. Will the internet explode? Is rockstar going woke? Are these the end times? How many dudes can you romance? All the dudes.

Shout-out to Polygon for pointing out how insane it is that there are already "50/100/250 things you missed in the GTA VI trailer" videos out.

Like, Christ.
