NFL 2023: The Week 9 thread

Romo would NOT shut up about BAL's SB chances all broadcast. I'd pump the brakes on that type of talk the first weekend of November. I feel like the NFL has transitioned a bit to where some teams can get ridiculously hot for a 4-6 week period and playoff success is highly dependent on depth/play at playoff time. You want to get hot in time for the final push.

Maybe BAL can keep their current pace going for the next two months. But I wouldn't bet on it (feel free to blast me as they steamroll everyone on the way to a SB blowout).

Of the 8 teams remaining on the Ravens schedule, only two have losing records. The Chargers are only barely under.500. It may be the hardest remaining schedule in football, so I don’t see us outpacing KC for seeding.

Right?

I think we're seeing Peak Ravens right now. How could they possibly be better? The only place to go is down as time passes, injuries mount and defenses get more time to scheme/try out solutions.

Kind of like how we saw Peak Niners in Sept.

Bengals heating up, haven't played their best. Same for PHI. And KC.

But who knows. BAL is a scary, well-rounded team. I still like their chances at the top of the conference.

To be decided...

There are a number of things moving in the right direction though. The late bye gives them an opportunity to stay fresh late, the offense is still developing, and they are scheduled to get key defensive weapons back later in the year. Hard to believe they have managed this defensive dominance with, in large part, a backup secondary and without a key edge player.

Offensively, they have indicated that they aren’t quite where they want to be particularly on timing throws. Though it would be hard to argue the improved hot routes didn’t have a huge effect against Detroit and Seattle.

If they play with this kind of focus week to week, it’s hard to imagine a team this season they can’t beat. But that kind of focus is hard to maintain.

Guys I think, just maybe, but don't hold me to this, the Giants WILL win, not just their division, not even just their conference, but possibly the entire NFL's top five draft pick.

And they'll be doing it without Daniel Jones because he tore his ACL.

Not certain if that helps or hurts their top pick chances.

If Coach Big Chungus wants to save his job, he just needs to find a team dumb enough to trade away the next Josh Dobbs.

Trade deadline's passed. That window is shut.

They need a QB that they can acquire now. Someone who can sling the ball.

Maybe someone with some... swag.

He should yell and throw things more. Like real leaders do.

Hopefully, finally, with all these coaches proven to be bad, even Belichick's "legacy" will dim. None of those coaches would be anywhere without Brady playing lights out forever even when they gave him the scrubs for receivers year after year.

Speaking of the Giants, the Panthers are about to sign (ALLEGEDLY) a linebacker who has barely played in the past two seasons and is (ALLEGEDLY) suspected of scamming customers of his Pokemon card business.

There's scraping the bottom of the barrel, and then there's scraping the other side of the barrel bottom.

This game is a trash fire covered in poop

But Arnold was feeding a donkey live on Manning Cast.

I love that Sack Wilson, out of all QBs, has an audible that is "chocolate milk."

The news that LT Jedrick Wills is going on IR changes a lot of how I think the upcoming Browns vs. Ravens game will go. I don't see semi-retired QB Groper Cleveland finishing the first quarter without faking another shoulder injury if he has to face that Ravens pass rush with James Hudson as his human shield.

I am sure his shoulder will be too sore to play. Maybe if he gets a relaxing massage...

The Rams are signing Carson Wentz.
It's hard not to wonder if Stafford is done. He can't seem to stay on the field.

New York Giants football in 2023, baby!

If Stafford's contract had been in any way possible to cut loose, Baker Mayfield would be the Rams starting quarterback right now. It was impossible to eat $106 million of dead money. It's pretty much impossible to do next year too at $86 million. In the 2025 offseason, the number becomes $37 million, which would push out Carson Wentz's $33.8 million for the 3rd highest ever dead cap figure (highest was Matt Ryan at $40.53 million).

They'll keep trying to play him because they have no other option. If that means he plays a little and ends up on IR, so be it. They have to play this out until at least 2025.

EDIT: It sure doesn't help matters in LA that Stetson Bennett is not expected to return this year after being put on the reserve/non-football-injury list for reasons that no one will say out loud.

Is it arthritis?

Because he's old.

Spoiler:

I don't know how to force space in a post but there was supposed to be like four blank lines between those two sentences for comedic effect.

I appreciate the clarification.

Given his public intoxication arrest in January, and the vague way McVay talks about it, my guess is that it's something more Manziel-ian.

I will go to my grave with absolute certainty that Bennett was a panic pick by the Rams, after the Saints jumped up a spot in front of them and took Jake Haener.

I don't know about you, but I am looking forward to buying my next Sorrento from Stetson Bennett Kia of Macon.

And because of that I am a Stafford fan. The Bucs had their little tease of semi-competence, but, well, they're headed for the 6-11 I expected at this point. The interior offensive line is just bad, there's no pass rush, Devin White continues to occasionally be in position, Dean and Davis are hurt enough the coverage is terrible, and the safeties are a combination of Winfield having an All-Pro season and and Ryan Neal needing to be in the concussion protocol because a head injury is the only possible explanation for how he is playing.

At least we have Baker Mayfield at QB. I'm sure glad I have a QB like Baker so my team doesn't have to expend massive quantities of draft capital to move up and take some rookie. That could sure be risky.

Tampa absolutely are the winners of the Baker saga. He looked like a different quarterback as soon as he got off the plane in Los Angeles, and then has had such a great start in Tampa. Meanwhile, neither Carolina nor Cleveland has improved their QB play any since dumping Baker (we'll see about Tiny Bryce in the long run). Sure makes it look like it wasn't Baker that was The Problem (tm).

I really do appreciate a Bucs fan that recognizes this.

It's been crazy how immediately good the crop of second generation "juniors" at DB (Winfield, Samuel, and Surtain) have been. Like from the moment they stepped onto the field as rookies.

WEEK 10 THREAD for anyone who still cares about this weird and unsatisfying NFL season.
