Welcome folks, and happy “64th Anniversary of the opening of the Guggenheim Museum” week!

The Guggenheim opened on 21 October 1959 after a tortuous, 15-year build. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, it was his last major work, and he died before it opened. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you stack bowls.

It’s another blockbuster week as the PS5 and Switch return fire in the ongoing War of the ‘Sclusies.

Super Mario Bros Wonder is a new chapter for Mario. He’s got a new voice actor and he’s back in 2D for the first time in over 10 years, since the Wii U days. The art is super shiny, with heaps of charming detail crammed into every animation. The platforming looks like what you’d expect from a Super Mario game: it moves the needle forward while also being polished to a sheen. There’s no score or time limit, just levels to explore. The levels are more dynamic, with the new Wonder flowers that create effects to shake levels up. New powerups include the soon-to-be-fan-favourite elephant form, which also turns the level music into brass horns. There’s a roster of playable characters with different abilities, but if you want Easy Mode, choose Yoshi or Nabbit, as they are immune to enemy damage.

Overall, it looks like good clean fun for all ages and abilities, in single or multiplayer.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 takes an already awesome game to the next level. Miles Morales was more of an expansion than a sequel, and this is a proper sequel: bigger, better, and more bombastic. You can now play as both Spider-Men, and switch between them on the fly, GTA5-style. Each one has their signature abilities and skills, while the black symbiote suit brings the new tricks.

Thankfully, too, there is way more map to explore, with 2 extra boroughs doubling its size. Normally, I am wary of open-world map bloat, but I don’t mind it in this case, as the last 2 games used the same New York map and it was getting samey. Cruising the city will be more fun than ever, because with the new wingsuit you can basically fly now, catching boosts from drafts in wind tunnels. You’ll never need to touch the ground again!

It’s not a great week to be another game.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged lets you make the little cars jump and ram each other now. There’s also a new story mode.

Sonic Superstars is more of a throwback than a step forward like Super Mario Bros Wonder, but the graphics have had a glow-up.

Endless Dungeon is a hybrid tower defence-tactical roguelite. You set up your turrets and defences, and also control a squad of dudes that can do their own fighting when the swarms come. It is quite challenging, even when playing with a full crew of 3 in mutliplayer—the RNG gods can play a role, but the devs have made it generally hard to boot, hoping to keep you on the grind.

Hellboy: Web of Wyrd gets points for its art style, which looks like the comics. It’s a 3rd person brawler with proc-gen levels and combat with a Dark Souls pace. You have to break an enemy’s toughness before they take damage, while preserving your own. How deep does the combat go? Is it style over substance?

Kona II: Brume is a detective game set in a Quebec mining village in 1970. It offers some very photorealistic renditions of snowy forests, with “Unsolved Mysteries” style narration. It has a bit of an Alan Wake vibe, as there are some awkward shooting sections mixed in with all the investigating.

Full props to Super Mario Bros Wonder, but Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is my GOTW. Insomniac have got the open-world formula just right, with a strong story to pull you through so you don’t get lost in the side stuff. I’m expecting amazing mission design featuring spectacular set pieces, making it the ultimate Spider-Man game.

Comments

I’m very excited for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and will devour reviews and impressions whilst, at the same time, not being sure if I’m going to buy it straight away. Looking forward to playing it whenever that is.

I'm Spiderman curious 2, but I want to see if I can finish Lies of P before Alan Wake 2 comes out and we just had a terrific Steam Next fest so I might be waiting on that one.

It’s very tricky at the moment, deciding what gets played now and what gets postponed until later.

Having no PS5 makes some of these lists easy to ignore. I do have Mario Bros. Wonder to look forward to, since I'd used the last of my vouchers on it. I will not be playing it right away, however, as it will be the vacation game my daughter and I play in December.

Yeah voucher for Mario here too after getting Zelda for so cheap a few months ago.

Also loved and platinumed Spider-Man. Beat Miles Morales but haven't finished NG+ for plat. Still I have some PSN credit saved up from work rewards. Might jump in on both and play Mario when the wife wants the TV.

Also Kickstarted the new Trese Brothers game a while back and it drops on PC early access Tues. Cyber Knights Flashpoint is the name. Looks like an Invisible Inc XCOM like. More combat that Invisible, more cyberpunk than XCOM. Should be cool. I'll probably dive in and see how much I can play in 72 real world hours then come back later. These devs are known for still patching 5 year old games with new features at least once a month. Long tail, with no paid DLC ever, so I'm sure I'll be dipping in and out for years.

Here’s a link to the Spider-Man 2 thread for future reference.

World of Horror is terrific. Here’s my EA review from 2020.

Trailer is also incredible:

World of Horror sounds (and looks) up my street. It doesn’t appear to be on PS5 yet. Possibly it’s a mix up with the release date announcement or it is on PS5 and the search engine isn’t showing it to me. Sadly, going by past experience, I can believe the latter.

I’m going to keep an eye out for it anyway. It has to be imminent.

The console versions were pushed back a week at the last minute. Coming out Oct. 26 now.

Fantastic, thanks.
