NFL 2023: The Week 3 Thread

Announcers tried to jinx him by mentioning Aguayo

Deebo nail in the coffin.

Week 2 Thoughts:

  • You probably thought it was silly to project a full season of Jake Moody scoring by assuming he would repeat his week 1 performance of 3 field goals and 3 extra points every single game. Well, week 2 came, and he kicked 3 field goals and 3 extra points. DOUBT ME NOW

3 FIELD GOALS, 3 EXTRA POINTS

DOUBT ME NOW

Remember how Saquon’s ankle injury was a “normal” sprain and how he was a fast healer?

Turns out that was all BS, and Saquon in fact has a high ankle sprain.

Rookie of the Year Moody?

Looking at the list of top ten backup QBs and trying to determine if they could win with the SF roster and system.

10: Mitch Trubisky No. he makes bad decisions and loses games.

9: Jameis Winston No. He is black Mitch Trubisky.

8: Tyrod Taylor Probably. he is cautious.

7: Tyler Huntley. Almost definitely. He is a checkdown specialist just like Purdy

6: Gardner Minshew. Probably. He is an unambitious system guy.

5: Teddy Bridgewater. Yes. He is a system guy that has shown he does well in a lot of systems.

4: Taylor Heinicke. Yes. He is beardless Ryan Fitzmagic

3: Sam Darnold. lol. Probably. He is mostly a shellshocked version of the guy he is backing up.

2: Jacoby Brissett: Probably. He is a vet that doesn't lose games for teams. He has been a journeyman long enough to know not to play heroball.

1: Andy Dalton Yeah. He is white Jacoby Brissett.

Yeah it will be interesting to see how much Purdy gets paid and how willingly the Niners will be to do it. I’m not convinced he’s just a system guy. He does small things well and seems to have superior pocket awareness at times.

Don't tease me like that.

Purdy does stuff that they didn't get out of Jimmy, or Nick Mullens, or BEAT HARD.

And for supposedly throwing "checkdowns", his average depth of target is smack dab in the middle of the pack. His average depth of completion is even a little higher, at 10th, despite how much the team runs the screen game.

We now have some details on Tiny Bryce’s injury. The Panthers are simply calling it an “ankle sprain” (no “high” to be found) and say he’s out for “1-2 weeks”.

I need someone to ask Reich if it’s a “normal” sprain and if he would categorize Bryce as a “fast healer”.

Step 1: Unmitigated, disastrous failure as a starter.

The 49ers have announced that Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have both been signed to multi-year extensions.

Shanahan was already signed through 2025, and Lynch through 2024, so it's not like either was reaching the end of their deal yet. But Jed York clearly wants to leave no doubt that Shanahan is going to continue to be here in the long-term. I thought after the last extension that it was clear Shanahan was next in the Belichick/Tomlin/Harbaugh/Carroll coaching longevity tier, and now this extension pretty much settles the question. Jed York absolutely does not want to search for a coach again anytime soon.

The surprising part is Lynch - not that he was offered the deal, but that he took it. The team expected Lynch to take the Amazon money and go back into the booth when that opportunity came along, and it was a surprise that he didn't. It's felt like the expectation was that he would have to take the broadcasting money at some point. So him signing an extension is a surprise, although there's nothing stopping him from walking away from it and going back into the booth anyway. It's just surprising that he's chosen to take the pay cut of being a GM rather than an upper-tier broadcaster for as long as he has, and that he would continue to do so.

My concern now, though, is if John Lynch does stay, how long are the 49ers going to be able to hang onto Adam Peters? Can't imagine he's going to let GM opportunities pass him by forever.

Apparently Nick Chubb only tore his MCL. Six to eight months for recovery, so that's better than what was feared.

Matt Ryan: “They told me they would think about it.”

Carson Wentz: “My calls went straight to voicemail.”

Already hedging Packers expectations.

I'd happily take a top ten pick season where Jordan Love looks good and Joe Barry gets the boot.

Why? Today's inactives:
Watson
Aaron Jones
Bakhtiari
Elgton Jenkins
Jaire Alexander

If you crunch the cap % of players out it's pretty gross. Could argue Bakhtiari is pretty much expected but still.

Looks like they painted the end zones at the last minute in New Jersey and there's a little rain so this is what they look like before the game starts:

Hopefully that turf doesn't kill anyone else today.

The Packers with a comical attempt at a flea flicker.

Lamar I never get tired of watching your greatness.

And the longest play of the season for the Patriots is a reception by... *checks notes*... Pharaoh Brown?!?!?!

Decided to give Falcons-Lions a watch. I was expecting to be underwhelmed by Desmond Ridder, and I find myself under-underwhelmed. Jared Goff looks solid, and, throw him onto Atlanta and that's a scary offense, but Ridder just doesn't have the arm to do much.

Edit: Ends the half sacked on a Hail Mary attempt. Kind of hilarious.

Jameis time.

4 fumbles 2 lost jeez Ravens.

Finally a clean drive and Lamar runs it in again. 14-13
