NFL 2023: The training camps thread

"C'mon Dak, c'mon Dak!"

Dallas has been so impressed with Dak's interception throwing that they've started preliminary discussions about a contract extension.

The Untold documentary about Johnny Manziel comes out tomorrow (Aug 8) on Netflix.

Lions are signing Teddy B.

Probably confirmation that this will be a full redshirt year for Hendon Hooker. And signing Teddy this late suggests they're not feeling great about Nate Sudfeld as QB2.

Good to have a mentor to teach a young QB how to play on one leg in case that ACL recovery doesn't go well.

Teddy 2 Gloves ain't done yet

Sean Taylor will never win a Super Bowl.

Harold Carmichael has never been on the cover of ESPN The Magazine.

Ja'Marr Chase will NEVER be on the cover of ESPN The Magazine. Neither will Garrett Wilson, Marvin Harrison, Jr., or Zachariah Branch!

LMAO at the "C'mon Daaaaak!" while the second one was still in the air, clearly underthrown.

The immense Dak love from Football Knowers remains a mystery to me.

I mean, he's a pretty good QB. Definitely top half of the league. Probably top 10 (but not top 5). Solid Tier 2. But I don't think he has ever been a great QB. I know QB wins aren't a real stat, but the Cowboys haven't come close to a Super Bowl since he's been there (and long before that).

When I look at Dak, I see goodness, but not greatness. What am I missing?

There is plenty of reason to hate on Dak, but being picked off in practice is just a thing that happens. Particularly if the practice is designed around favoring the defense. I have no idea what was going on in that play or during the practice for that matter. They could have been practicing third and 15 plays out of 11 personnel, in which case the defense better win.

Getting picked off in practice because the DB won a 50/50 ball is one thing. Getting picked off because you're making some awful underthrows that DBs are catching like outfielders is a little different.

Especially when that same QB led the league in INTs (while only playing in 12 games!) the year before. It's definitely something Cowboys fans should be concerned about.

The real stat is DAL QB1.

The Colts signed Kenyan Drake a couple days ago, and then called Kareem Hunt during his visit to the Saints and offered him more money than New Orleans was, so he's headed to Indy for a meeting tomorrow and probably a contract.

Jim Irsay and the Colts are very clearly gearing up to play this season without Jonathan Taylor.

Post-Snyder Washington football is off to an inauspicious start.

Players have gone to Ron Rivera to complain about new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

As Warren Sharp put it:

we haven't even had 1 preseason game yet...

and players are complaining to the HC about the OC behind his back...

and then the HC is airing that laundry publicly in the media without wholesale defending his handpicked OC

yikes

It's especially concerning, given how closely it mirrors things that have both been rumored about Bieniemy over the years (vocalized by reporters like Benjamin Allbright), as well as explicitly stated out loud by players like LeSean McCoy.

It's hard to talk about criticism of Bieniemy without seeing it through the lens of the league's less than fair treatment of black coaches. And there's little disputing that a lot of good black coaches have gotten a raw deal when it comes to opportunity. But perhaps, some of Bieniemy's career trajectory struggles are of his own making.

Allbright and Shady have each taken some heat over what they've said about Bieniemy before, but both are feeling pretty vindicated today:

As it turns out, once you clean out the morally bankrupt and incompetent owner, maybe consider getting rid of all the people he hired. For... reasons.

No, your eyes don't deceive you. This isn't a repost. Jake Moody just out there kicking bombs again.

Moody Time: drinkin' 40s, kickin' 60s.

Amazingly, the Colts and Hunt were "unable to reach an agreement".

I wonder what Hunt's meeting had to be like for the Colts to go from "we'll pay you more than the Saints" to "you know what, nevermind". Or if the whole thing was theater to put pressure on JT.

The Colts instead signed a different running back, Jason Huntley, who was released from Pittsburgh a few days ago.

Sportswriters keep suggesting the 49ers should trade Trey Lance for about a 3rd round pick.

I don't get the thought process. The Niners are deep into their Super Bowl window, and can't afford to waste any more seasons.

So they trade Lance, and then they're one Purdy injury away from the season resting solely on Sam Darnold, and in exchange for what? An extra 3rd round pick?

The Niners have led the league the last few years in exactly two things: QB injuries, and extra 3rd round picks. They've already got an extra 3rd in 2024 and 2025. How much does getting one more really move the needle? They've had so many that they just spent their last one on a (future Hall of Famer) kicker.

I can't imagine watching the Niners 2022 season and thinking, "yeah they should get rid of one of their QBs to get another 3rd round pick".

How about straight up for Baker Mayfield, totally fits your scenario. Who wouldn't want to recreate the 2022 Carolina Panthers offense post-McCaffery trade?

Kyle Shanahan says that, if the team had managed to pull off the quarterback-less miracle against Philly, they would have signed Philip Rivers to start in the Super Bowl.

Once again, we are on the wrong timeline.

Instead of a shot at the Lombardi Trophy, he ended up with moar children.

Muffed punt and SEA takes it to the house. But called back because it was muffed and MIN never had possession.

What a dumb rule.

Brisket looks better than Howell.

I watched the first quarter of Houston/NE, and I don’t want to overreact to preseason week 1, but damn did C.J. Stroud look atrocious.

Slow and late on absolutely everything. The offensive line did him zero favors, for sure, but Stroud was not on time on basically any rep.

Stroud struggled under pressure at OU, but he rarely was actually under any. Different story at the NFL level.

Baker looked better than Kyle Trask.

There is no optimism of any sort in that sentence.

How many times in his life do you think people have called him, “Kyle Trash”?

Jordan Love played a whole two series vs the Bengals.

ESPN even described it as 'Impressive'.

Sean Clifford was also impressive. Until he played enough series to throw a pick 6 + another INT.

I get not over using Love in a preseason game but curious that he didn't get a bit more action. But he is entering his 4th season so what does he need reps for.
