I don’t disagree.

I’m just mostly fixated on how they would try to start a whole new tradition from scratch and would hamper the ability of fans to actually watch the product.

It could, against all odds, work. Who knows. But it has to be watchable.

I mean, it could be interesting. But if the only reward is financial, the best (and most well-paid) players aren't going to be extra motivated (I mean, any superstar could make the extra money by doing a couple of TV spots for local businesses). So we get a tournament where the only people who are extra-motivated are the guys who may play 10 minutes off the bench, tops.

I mean, it can work, I know it works internationally (especially in other sports). I just don't know what it means in a month or two if, let's say Dallas, wins this, and then drops 5 in a row.

I think a piece missing here in the equation is that in the other sports where there are mid-season tourneys (ie, soccer), there isn't a traditional US-style playoff format.

The winner of the EPL is the team that won the full "regular" season of 3-dozen+ games. There is no seeded tourney after the regular season. It's like old-school baseball where the top team "wins the pennant" and even then, there was still a World Series.

So, an in-season tourney and a "cup" to hoist at the end is kinda cool for the teams that have zero chance of being the #1 or #2 team. It maintains interest for the teams that are out of contention for the Larry O'Brien.

How does no one in the league office not get that?

To me the weirdest thing about it is they started it so early in the season. I had expected it to be in January / February when it was the middle of the season and nothing much is happening. Instead they started it after five games? Just weird. If the intention was to drum up interest and increase viewership, it is strange to start it so early when interest is already high because the season just started. Do it after game 20 when people are beginning to check out and the routine is setting in, not after game 4.

Yeah it would make more sense as a lead in to the all star break

I'd like to see a regular approach that lasts the full season. Opening rounds are Nov-Dec. Second round Jan-Feb, last round March.

And make it a specific day(s) like Champions League for soccer: Tues/Thurs games are for the Cup. Or maybe Saturday Night Basketball or something.

They're competing with football at this time of year and I'd like to see them lean into what makes NBA better than football and do some counter programming.

All of the tournament games are on Tuesdays and Fridays for that reason. I am not sure about the championship games in Vegas, but all of the pool games are on specific days of the week.

Leading into the All Star break makes the most sense. Especially if it meant they could wipe some events off the calendar that aren’t really that interesting.

Cool!

Good job, NBA Marketing Dept! I'm a filthy casual that has an ESPN+ sub, listens to several sports pods and had to find this out via my videogame forum.

Nailed it.

CJ McCollum had a good sense of humor about this clickbait last night.

I have always thought if a player sits for their first year they aren't really a rookie and shouldn't be compared to true rookies. I get it, they didn't play games so technically for the purposes of awards and stuff they are counted as a rookie, but I don't agree with it and I think they should be counted as a second year player. There is definitely an advantage of being with NBA coaches, trainers, etc for a year. Being in film sessions, nutrition, getting used to travel, and so on.

If a rookie played 5 minutes in his first game and then got injured and was out for the year, he wouldn't be considered a rookie in his second year right? That 5 minutes of game time really makes a difference? I don't think Chet, or Simmons, or any of those guys like that should have been counted as rookies and it should just go straight by the year of your contract.

Yep it was a joke for Simmons too. And that robbed Donovan Mitchell of the official rookie of the year award. Although he did get a player voted RotY award.

What is going on in this HOU-LAL game?

Wemby underwhelming at The Mecca. Which really doesn't mean anything other than online, where we now judge rookies on a game-by-game basis, rather than checking their progress in February, which is probably what we should be doing.

Apropos of nothing, PHI is 8-1.

Clip Ship is 3-6.

And Maxey dropped 50 tonight. Thinking they don’t miss Harden too badly.

They could add confusion to the NBA in-season tournament games by playing with the court like this

I am in favor.

Personal bias, sure, but it seems like the whole point of that court is to try to force Steph Curry to make a three from the other three point line.

The tournament works.

Nuggets Clippers
Warriors Timberwolves

Great games for a Tuesday in November.

Also Reggie Jackson on the Nuggets is cheating. What a great pickup for them. (I posted this before he missed 2 FTS lol)

I saw this and just assumed Draymond across 3 games to even guess from.

Not trying to brag. That would be everyone's assumption.

Draymond suspended for five games for getting way closer to Rudy Gobert than anyone wanted to back in March, 2020.

Does Rudy getting anything for going after Klay? Sure looked like he instigated then Dray escalated.
