NBA 2023-24 Season Catch-All

Now LeBron is talking about what Bronny thinks about criticism.

Dude is the H-53 Super Stallion of helicopter parents.

Give the kid some f*cking space, dad.

It’s going to be awesome when this comes up in press conferences constantly during the season.

New deal is headed to board of governors for approval. Word is $76bb for 11 years.

Dying at Embiid finding out that FIBA refs don't give two shits about foul baiting.

Seemed a bit long.

Double checked and last two deals were 8 and 9 years. Big number at 76 though so I guess the NBA is just happy to lock that in and see what the media landscape looks like 10+ years from now.

Edit:

Oh ya Kawhi pulling out of the Olympics?

Anyone suprised by this? Is Kawhi even surprised by this?

The funniest thing about the deal is they think Peacock will still be around in 11 years.

My thoughts exactly.

If the NBA was confident that popularity was growing you would think they would want a shorter deal. Get back to the table in 8~ years and leverage Google vs Apple vs Amazon vs Netflix?

I guess the $$$ was good and they have an out if the cable partners straight up beg to get out.

I think part of it is we are probably near the peak for a while of media companies scrambling for live content to sell subscriptions. I am guessing they believe in 5 years the market will be worse and have further consolidation. Also, they want to sell two expansion teams and they will get a higher price if they have 10 years of guaranteed revenue in hand when they go out for bids.

Agreed.

I was thinking about how little live sports on teevee factors into my free time now. I just don't have the time and there are too many competing interests.

I know I'm approaching the age out limit as the dominant demo for advertisers but I can't believe things are looking better for Z and beyond (all the socials, gaming, etc).

Get that bag now.

Rest of the world done caught up to the USA.

World Champs Germany giving us a real run for it.

This gets said a lot, and somehow, not nearly enough.

LeBron is FORTY. Man just hit a 3 and a tough layup to potentially win the game against the World Champs.

Forty.

NBA says it has signed new 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon

The NBA signed its 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday after saying it was not accepting Warner Bros. Discovery’s $1.8 billion per year offer to continue its longtime relationship with the league.

The media rights deals were approved by the league’s Board of Governors last week and will bring the league about $76 billion over those 11 years.

WBD had five days to match a part of those deals and said it was exercising its right to do so, but its offer was not considered a true match by the NBA. That means the 2024-25 season will be the last for TNT after a nearly four-decade run.

Booooooo.

If Amazon is smart they will pay EJ, Charles, Kenny, and Shaq whatever they want to keep the crew together.

EJ has been crystal clear he's not leaving TNT.

The guy is a cancer survivor. He's comfortable and he's got other priorities than ambition and/or greed. I'd bet he wants to stay at the place where he knows the crews, he knows the execs, he knows the early career people. The guy is, from all reports, a stand up dude who is very well respected in the building. There isn't a price on that for someone like him.

Now watch them all jump to AMZN.

Hold on a minute.

Yes. Sue your partners.

Shouldn't forget, the WNBA got a big ol' deal too.

More than 100 WNBA regular-season games will be broadcast each season through an 11-year media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime and NBC that the league announced Wednesday.

While the league didn’t reveal the value, a person familiar with the deal confirmed to The Associated Press that the WNBA would receive about $200 million a year. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.

The deal will begin with the 2026 season and run through 2036, with it potentially evaluated after three years and potentially give the WNBA a chance to get even more money. The WNBA’s deal was announced shortly after the NBA’s.

“Partnering with Disney, Amazon and NBCU marks a monumental chapter in WNBA history and clearly demonstrates the significant rise in value and the historic level of interest in women’s basketball,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. “These agreements allow the league to continue to build a long-term and sustainable growth model for the future of women’s basketball and sports which will benefit WNBA players, teams and fans.”

Also, I would NOT want to defend Arike Ogunbowale. EVER.

Okay, if the deal is lose NBA on TNT, but we get Roundball Rock back....

.......I mean......

Welcome back, “Roundball Rock.”

John Tesh’s iconic theme music for NBA broadcasts on NBC is coming back when the league’s new media rights deals commence in the 2025-26 season and is one of many highlights of the 11-year agreement the league finally completed Wednesday.

But Fox has been using that for college hoops for like 5 years. I've heard it plenty.

I am ready.

DOESN'T COUNT

Roundball Rock is overrated. Gaining that plus Bob Costas style introductions but losing Inside the NBA is a net loss. It’s a wipeout.

Warner Bros. Discovery Launches Stealth Marketing Campaign Against NBA, Amazon

Warner Bros. Discovery is ready to call foul on the NBA.

If the shrinking media giant has its way, athletes, influencers and others will begin to take to social media and other venues to criticize the NBA and Amazon for a new deal that will have the digital titan’s Prime Video stream dozens of professional basketball games starting in the 2025-2026 season.

Warner Bros. Discovery has hired Edelman, an independent public-relations firm, to wage a campaign that aims to cast aspersions on Amazon getting a $1.8 billion-per-year package of NBA rights that Warner believes should stay under its aegis. According to people familiar with the matter, Edelman will seek to line up athletes, executives and other luminaries to criticize the NBA’s decision, part of a broader allocation of media rights that also awarded games to Walt Disney and NBCUniversal in an 11-year pact that will commence after the next NBA season, which will be Warner’s last.

Warner Bros. Discovery could not be reached for immediate comment about the Edelman hire, nor could an Edelman representative. The Wall Street Journal previously reported on the Edelman hire. The company in the past has represented big marketers like Unilever’s Hellmann’s and Yum Brands’ Taco Bell, and has been the subject of protest by climate activists who did not like its ties to oil companies.

Edelman is likely to make the case that moving the NBA games that have been on TNT for years will making things more complex for consumers, who have grown accustomed to watching Warner’s NBA telecasts and its “Inside the NBA” studio show.

Warner is no doubt hoping to ramp up pressure on the basketball league as it also works to make its case in court. Warner on Friday filed a suit against the NBA in the Supreme Court in the State of New York alleging the NBA breached terms of a contract that gives Warner the right to match the terms of any offer that would move games to a competitor. Warner sought earlier this week to match Amazon’s offer, but it is clear the media company and the sports league differ on Warner’s ability to match the abilities of a major streaming operation with its cable network and Max broadband hub.

Charles Barkley, perhaps the most popular and outspoken member of that program, took to Instagram Friday to express his dismay at the fracas between Warner and the NBA. “TNT matched the money, but the league knows Amazon and these tech companies are the only ones willing to pay for the rights when they double in the future,” Barkley said. “The NBA didn’t want to piss them off.”

Has someone started the 2024-25 season thread yet?

Nope! Although I figure might as well wait until after the Olympics end.

I really think Booker is going to be someone to watch next season. Kerr spoke really highly of him. And if you look at his body language and actions, he came there to learn as much as he could. He did everything that was asked of him too. Definitely one of the unsung heroes of Olympic Basketball.

I know Tatum was inconsistent but I hope he got some pointers too.

Bam got a boost + confidence and it was really nice to see Davis locking down the paint.
Jrue was also a part of a lot of highlight reels..
