Turning point: the England throw-in that encapsulated 58 years of hurt

I remember seeing the play in question and being like "You're wasting an opportunity!"

Not unexpectedly perhaps, but he certainly walks away with his head held very high, Gareth Southgate has stood down as England Manager.

Is that Eddie Howe's music!?

You know The Sun is going to wheel out someone like Steve Hodge to say the job should go to Frank Lampard.

Maybe Lamps and Stevie G can share the job and we can have that conversation all over again.

Right now I’ve having a good laugh listening to all the ‘fans’ that think the likes of Tuchel, Klopp or Guardiola would pay the FA to take charge.

I suspect they’ll go for Howe with Potter as backup. Howe’s ‘sponsors’ at Newcastle have both just sold up their stakes, I wonder if Howe would like to jump before he’s pushed.

Unless they decide to keep it totally in house like Carsley, but I’d be surprised if they went that far.

Bring back Sven! Everyone loved that stretch.

Suprised Southgate left tbh. Was his job to keep for another 2 years if he wanted it. It's so fresh I see no rumors about him going to a club or anything. I guess good for him for walking out on top.

It's a real shame Mourinho isn't available. That would of been fun but maybe too close to actually capable.

Wow. Squires - player of the tournament.

LOL, everybody's getting intro trouble with their celebrations now.

Euro winners chant 'Gibraltar is Spanish' at parade

Players from Spain's winning men's Euro 2024 football team have led crowds in chants of "Gibraltar is Spanish" at their victory celebrations in the capital Madrid.

Midfielder Rodri, who also plays for English club Manchester City, was among those chanting.

Gibraltar's Football Association made an official complaint about the celebrations to European football body Uefa, describing them as "extremely provocative and insulting".

Gibraltar is an enclave at Spain's southern tip that has been under British rule since the 18th Century, but Spain has long called for its return.

The chanting came as tens of thousands of Spanish fans gathered in central Madrid on Monday to greet the players after their 2-1 victory over England in Sunday's final match.

Waving flags and dressed in Spain's traditional red and yellow strip, the fans cheered as the players made an open-top bus tour through the streets of the city.

The parade ended in Cibeles square, where the European Championship trophy was presented.

Rodri, whose full name is Rodrigo Hernandez, was seen chanting "Gibraltar is Spanish" along with right-winger Lamine Yamal as they got on the stage in front of the crowds.

The team's captain Alvaro Morata later led the crowds with the same chant.

The Gibraltar FA on Tuesday complained about the team's behaviour, saying in a statement it had "noted the extremely provocative and insulting nature of the celebrations around the Spanish Men's national team winning Euro 2024".

"Football has no place for behaviour of this nature," the statement added.

Wesley Fofana, a teammate of Enzo Fernandez (who is seen singing the song front and center in the video) and one of SEVEN black Frenchmen in the Chelsea dressing room has called Fernandez out.

Eh, I don't mind that one. I also wouldn't mind Moroccan players chanting the same about the Spanish enclaves. And the Portuguese players chanting about Olivença.

Someone who knows anything has gotten into Fernandez's ear and he's made an IG apology. We'll see if this lasts into the season.

Which is only 1 month away so preseason stuff is starting soon.

Yes the Premier League starts in 1 month. United vs Fulham.

Do I want club football again? Yes. Is my partner ready for me to start watching so much again. I'm in trouble.

Holy shit you're right. August 16.

The fixture congestion is getting genuinely absurd. Wow.

Unbelievable drama for Shamrock Rovers in Dublin last night.

2-1 up against Vikingur in a Champions League Qualification match, they gave away a 98th minute penalty, only to see it missed as the last kick of the game. Mad.

Former Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano, who is the coach of the nation's Olympic football team, said the video was "taken out of context" and his country is "totally inclusive". The 40-year-old, whose side will play at this summer's Games in Paris, also said Fernandez is a "great guy".

I desperately need someone to follow up on this and ask Javier what the context is.

Son Heung-min’s father promises change after bullying accusations at academy

Son senior was always seen as a tough taskmaster for the current Tottenham captain thanks to tales of four-hour keepy-uppy sessions and a relentless drive for perfection that helped Son become world famous. That was also a selling point of the Son Football Academy set up in 2021 and run by Son Sr. It offered the chance for a select group of young hopefuls to learn at the feet of a man who had played such a pivotal role in the development of the captain of Spurs and South Korea.

Now, however, there is an investigation into his coaching methods at the facility in Chuncheon, a pleasant lakeside city known in Asia as home to a spicy chicken dish and the setting for the 2002 TV series Winter Sonata, a major milestone in the development and popularity of Korean dramas. Son Sr and two of his coaches have been accused of giving verbal and physical abuse to students. After a training camp held in Japan, the parents of a young player accused coaches in March of hitting their son with a corner flag, among other things. In April, the police sent the case to prosecutors.

In June Son Woong-jung issued a statement. “SON Football Academy and I have apologised to the victims and worked to resolve the issue amicably.” He added, however, that the accusers had demanded an unacceptably large sum of money. “We are currently awaiting a fair legal assessment of the situation based on facts.

“However, many of my accuser’s claims differ from what actually happened. On my honour, I can swear that none of the actions or words from my coaches came from a place that wasn’t based on love for our students.”

A group of parents of some other children at the academy released a statement saying that nothing untoward had happened. Son has acknowledged that his methods may not be the most modern. “I admit that I stuck to my own ways without recognising the standards set by the changing times,” he said. “I will seek other ways that can help young athletes concentrate on the field and stay committed to training.”

Oh yeah, he was abusing children.

14-year-old makes his debut in MLS for Philly.

Lord knows how good he'll be, but I feel like lessons have been learned from the Freddy Adu experience.

Olympic soccer started today, 2 days before opening ceremony, as usual.

Watched Spain win 2-1 this morning and New Zealand is up 2-1 right now.

Think USA plays at 3

Another 2-1 game.

I guess France is gonna beat us 2-1 too? Every game I watch today. Should have made a bet

Chaos nonsense, but also not sad to see Argentina take a big fat L to an African team.

3-0. But the over 2.5 bet would have been good again heh

USA up 3-0 today. Huh.

I take it you enjoyed the opening results of the SPL Omni?

We'll see just how much come this time tomorrow. It was just about as tough an opening fixture for Rangers as it could get, and from watching most of the game, Hearts had the far better of real chances.

I'm not going to pretend that them being in a bit of disarray, stadium issues and the manager suggesting funding issues for new players (though they have signed far more outfield players than Celtic have even been linked with so far this window...) isn't encouraging, but we really have to make it count tomorrow and in this first month or so of the season. Make hay while the sun shines, as they say, and the dilly dallying in the transfer market so far is definitely not stamping an authority on things...

An impressive pre-season with wins over Man City and a big win over Chelsea may paper over an otherwise mediocre transfer window so far, but we will still get humiliated in the new-look CL this year unless we get bodies in. The whole left-defensive area was targeted time and again by every opponent, domestically and in Europe, last season, and there hasn't been a sniff of a change in that area.

But yes, I enjoyed the instant dropping of points by the other side, but we have to capitalise on that and make the most of it tomorrow, and Killie are no push-overs. Hopefully they are tired out after their European exploits.
