Al Hilal - noted global brand team - have made a £259 million bid for Mbappe.

Just for 1 year, after which he would go to Real Madrid.

Game's gone, but I don't see how he doesn't just take the money. He's already reported to have considered sitting out the entire season, so unless he's so committed to f*cking over PSG, take the cash-in for a year if RM can't make the financials work.

In news interesting to me, Marco Silva rejected Saudi Arabia but Mitro wants to go, so we're going to try and replace him with Raul Jimenez.

I hope Jimenez can have some kind of resurgence, because he was great until the head injury, and just hasn't been close to the same player since.

In other news, Joba Bonito is back (would it be Joga Bonita for the women? I don't speak Portuguese).

Something-something Germany something-something ruthless efficiency.

Oh, and Jamaica managed to draw France! Which, for Jamaica, is huge.

Lastly, RE: the Saudis -

EPL teams must genuinely be quite thankful for the Saudis, because the Saudi Pro League is the new dumping ground for unwanted players on high wages. The Saudis can afford those players to improve the quality in their league, so it benefits in both directions.

I had a bit of "chat" about this with my Newcastle supporting friend at the weekend. He was displeased when I suggested that St Maximan would go to the Saudi league for whatever the cost of bringing in Harvey Barnes would be, and low and behold guess what has happened - I suspect that will get challenged by other clubs if the FA won't do it.

While there are many legitimate reasons and it's easy to sink into Conspiracy, I would be expecting the highest levels of scrutiny for a lot of these transactions given it's basically the same owners trading players amongst their clubs, or, in the case of Chelsea, a club they have significant investment in. I'm afraid I'm at peak cynicism over most of this, I've already expressed my opinion on some of the Liverpool based transfers - although it looks like Bayern's interest in Fabinho might be giving him second thoughts.

I just wanna know how FM 24 plans to handle this stuff. Because they can't just pretending it's not happening, like they did with the Ukraine war.

He should probably do it no?

I said this was all fluff until the Saudis landed an actual player. Obviously Mbappe is beyond that.

Without the lock in of multiple years why not. At 24 he can go on a quick 1 year vacation and still come back and have a hugely decorated career.

The obvious next shoe to fall would be come next year when he's a FA and the wages are still 2x 3x whatever European club can offer.

Where's Neymar fit into all this as I don't think I've seen him rumored at all. He's like the washed up (31) prize I'm sure PSG would love to send off instead.

You don't think they've already landed an "actual" player?
The Saudi clubs seem to be focusing a lot on PT coaches. Maybe they watch the Brazilian league.

Are you trying to use Jogo Bonito (not a literal translation but meaning the beautiful game)?

He/She plays beautifully -> (Ele/Ela) Joga bonito.
We do have female versions for adjectives but in this specific case it's always the male version.

I was, and completely fat-fingered it without noticing.

Thank you for the Portugese lesson, however, I was wondering if it was different in this circumstance.

So the people the Beeb spoke to say it's unlikely that Mbappe moves to Saudi Arabia, because, well... who gives a sh*t about winning the Saudi league?

French football journalist Lisa Leroux believes the £259m offer proves Mbappe "really is a once in a generation player" but that "he won't go, for him it's more than just about the money".

If he moved to Saudi, Mbappe would likely become the highest paid player in football, eclipsing the reported £177m-a year-earned by Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr after his move from Manchester United in December.

It has been reported that Mbappe could earn close to 700m euros (£602m) a year with commercial arrangements and image rights on top of his salary.

"No player has ever been offered this salary in football, and I think even in sporting history for one year," Leroux said. "The salary that he would be getting would just be historic and out of this world.

"It would be about 59m euros a month, almost 2m euros a day."

French football expert Julien Laurens agrees and says Mbappe will not go to Saudi.

"He doesn't want to go there" Laurens told BBC Radio 5 Live. "When PSG say we have given permission to speak to Mbappe, he doesn't want to speak to them, Al-Hilal know that. It's not about money for him.

"He just wants to win every trophy possible. Right now, at 24 years old, that does not include the Saudi League."

This is another reason why I think the Saudis are in this for the long-haul. Because it's going to take years of this kind of investment to get the profile of the Saudi league up to a place where people consider it a prestigious place to play, and not just a cash-in.

But I do think they can fast-track and brute force such a thing, especially if the ultimate plan is to create some kind of Super League involving UEFA and Saudi clubs. And since European football so desperately needs every penny they can get, I can easily imagine the Saudis creating a deal that people just can't say no to.

I love the engagement-bait horsesh*t complex we live in today.

I saw a post from BBC Sport yesterday on FB that was just the eyes emoji following Wrexham beating LA Galaxy 4-0.

Then you click on the story and find out that they actually beat LA Galaxy's reserve team.

Meanwhile:

So in Group A, anyone can still get through, but things look least promising for Norway, which is a bit of a shock as they are by far the highest-ranked team in the group.

Messi might want to move the difficulty up a notch.

my favorite thing about busquets & messi joining MLS aside from *waves to everything messi* is watching busquets get the ball off his CB, check his shoulders in anticipation of the press, then check them 3 more times because he's so confused the press still hasn't arrived

Have they passed a threshold of signing anyone you would turn on a TV (or browser) to watch or put together a team that is interesting? Even the highlights?

So far the only thing the Saudi League has done is bailout EU teams and inject them with cash. Which btw is also somewhat counter to them gaining dominance. If the big EU clubs manage to retain the players people actually want to watch then it's just a huge money pit.

As Pred mentioned this will take years.

No and Mbappé wouldn't change that for me and I would guess it wouldn't change for a lot of people too.
They did get "actual" players though. You can't deny that.

It is being reported that Mbappé won't talk to Saudi Clubs about a transfer. So money doesn'y buy everyone?

Also Paul Mullin of Wrexham fame got trucked in their friendly yesterday by the GK and punctured a lung.

Pass interference, no attempt to play the ball.

Netherlands up 1-0 at the half.

Liked a letter to the Guardian's MbM pointing out that, if the USWNT goes out early, FOX SPORTS' coverage goes straight to sh*t.

By the power of Lindsey Horan's skull, etc.

My bad I missed the first half. Looking better now that I'm watching

These idiots singing USA over and over again are really annoying.

The U.S. is missing some fantastic players through injury (they obviously aren't the only ones), but the rest of the world is really closing the gap.

Like, on current form, I still think this team is one of the favorites to win, but if they don't top the group and get a bad draw, I could easily see them getting dumped out of the knockouts early.

Which, while it would be treated here as an enormous disaster, would probably also say something fantastic about the global women's game.

Friendly reminder that all the games are also available on Peacock and Telmundo/Universo. Spanish language, but that's better than Fox, even if (like me) you don't speak a word of Spanish.

Well at least it's a point. Sheesh

Neat training field element to the US goal. You can see one of the US players make a curving run before the corner is played, that goes in, then across the near corner of the six yard box and then back out again.

The Dutch player zonally marking there moves forwards about three yards with their arms out like "what do I do about this?" and then the ball is played into the gap she just left, for Horan to head in.

Mbappe refused to even meet with the Saudis.

I think he's genuinely committed to running out his contract and f*cking over PSG.

Parisian sources have said the 24-year-old would benefit from a €160m (£138m) signing-on fee if he wound down his existing contract and moved to the Spanish capital in 2024.
