Probably should play him up front on his own. Loving porteous goal it was very defender chucks himself at a ball.

I'd just like to say, that as an Englishman, how pleased I am to see Scotland process so well through this qualifying group stage. It's been decades overdue to be honest.

The game on Tuesday (I think) should be good fun, if nothing else!

+1 for being delighted to see Scotland doing well. Looking forward to the friendly.

In other news: More from the saga of Antony, who has appeared on Brazilian TV to deny allegations against him. He argues, "I have a mother, a sister. I would never want this to happen to them."

In other words:

How do people keep rolling that out as an excuse? Like, I'm not even arguing whether he did it or not, literally, every man who has abused a woman has a mother.

Many of them had sisters! So it doesn't seem to really be a factor!

In unrelated news, it's kind of funny how obsessed American companies are with getting their sports games out in time for the new season, whereas in football, EA FC won't drop until nearly October, and FM waits until well into November.

Meanwhile, remember how FIFA was going to make a new FIFA game? Well, they're still claiming it's going to come out next year, which honestly is a bit disappointing because I think we all want to see how much of a total pile of sh*t it's gonna be.

It’s unclear how much Infantino actually knows about the FIFA video games but according to him, ‘The new FIFA game – the FIFA 25, 26, 27 and so on – will always be the best egame for any girl or boy, we will have news on this very soon.’

GOD it's going to be so terrible. Like borderline Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing terrible.

Thanks Sorbicol. I am expecting you to pump us though, progress has happened and the Spain result gives hope but you simply outclass us in every position. Hampden will be jumping though.

I cannot wait for FIFA's new game, just for how much of a flaming trainwreck it's going to be. I'm expecting something that gets reviewed worse than eFootball.

However, it's not like EA has made a good football game recently either. I'm still playing FIFA18 because it seems like the last one where someone on the design team had seen a game of football. I even went back to modified PES21, (which has its own problems), in the hopes of finding something more recent that's engaging.

I'm not sure I was that impressed with our draw against Ukraine, but then again I think England went into it with a "don't lose" attitude that it probably warranted given the emotional charge behind it.

I have to continually remind my fellow English fans that Gareth Southgate is our most successful manager since Sir Alf Ramsey, and that maybe they need to keep that in mind. However I am more than a bit baffled now by his insistence on playing Maguire, Henderson and most especially Phillips.

They say every manager has a sell-by date. Could he be approaching his?

It's incredible, the way FIFA plays, players are so positionally static that, when I watch the game, it does not look like a game of football at all.

In possibly the most on-brand moment ever, Rubiales discussed his resignation with Piers f*cking Morgan.

Actually, listening to what Rubiales said, I think Guillem Balague has it right:

Knowing that he only has a couple of newscasts left and that we were all listening, Rubiales has started his political career right under our noses

The Paul Pogba fall-off has been incredible.

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba tested positive for testosterone, Italy's anti-doping agency announced Monday.

The test was carried out after Juventus' game at Udinese on Aug. 20. Pogba did not play in the Serie A match but was on Juve's bench.

Nado Italia, the anti-doping agency, said that Pogba was suspended provisionally with immediate effect. Pending a trial and testing of a backup B sample, he risks a suspension of up to four years.

"In acceptance of the instance proposed by the National Anti-doping Prosecutor, it has provided for the provisional suspension of the athlete Paul Labile Pogba," Nado Italia said in a statement.

The tribunal said Pogba had violated anti-doping rules when they found the prohibited substance "non-endogenous testosterone metabolites," adding that the results were "consistent with the exogenous origin of the target compounds."

Juventus issued a statement acknowledging the positive result and suspension, adding that it would "evaluate the next procedural steps."

Is it just me or does it seem odd this resignation happened when the US was enthralled with its own football's opening week?

Erm. How do I put this? Outside the US, nobody really cares. Sorry.

This was Rubiales bowing to the inevitable after Hermoso made the sexual assault complaint to the Spanish police and a judge started a formal investigation. The US football season has nothing to do with it.

When will it ever get better for Harry Maguire? Honestly.

IDK, I thought it was an excellent finish. Completely wrong-footed the keeper.

3-1 and That just about sums up where we are as Scotland. A hardworking well organised side with some talent however if a team like England with their level of quality decides to play we aren’t going to get anywhere. Still good enough for the euros and we will be capable of a shock if we get everything absolutely correct.

Good against the minnows like Cyprus and Spain, but not ready for European superpowers like England.

I thought the olés every time Maguire had the ball were funny - and then he scored to put the comedy cherry on the top.

Speaking of minnows, USMNT getting real liberal with the use of "stunner."

I was stunned that it went into the net.

New season of Welcome to Wrexham is starting.

I think my current favorite thing about this story is people crying "spoilers" about discovering they got promoted when, the BBC, ESPN, and the team's own Twitter account all exist.

Moshiri seems to have had enough of this PL-ownership lark (at least, without being able to rely on his buddy Usmanov for money as-needed).

The investment talks with MSP broke down, and now 777 Partners are in advanced negotiations to buy the entire club - though that's not without concerns as well.

No final agreement has been reached, but sources have “expressed doubt about 777’s suitability for ownership.” The company has faced “allegations of fraud, offering illegal loans and failing to pay bills totalling hundreds of thousands of dollars in the US.”

Julian Draxler going to Qatar from PSG.

I don't mention this because he's relevant more of a oh wow I forgot that guy even existed.

I remember when he was supposedly the next big thing and.... now he's 29 off to Qatar.

It must be bad, his Mum has asked everyone to stop being so horrible

My sympathy for Maguire is limited I’m afraid. He knew he wasn’t in the pecking order at Manchester United as soon as Ten Hag removed the captaincy from him, but they gave him the opportunity to leave.

However, turning down that move to West Ham? That’s the point where he has to take in responsibility for where his is now.

He’s not in a good place. I’m not sure he’s got the wherewithal to recognise it.

Verratti as well.

PSG had several of these dudes who went there, got fat contracts, and were pretty much never heard of again.

How long has it been since the last football sex assault scandal? Reset the clock.

Spanish police have arrested three unnamed Real Madrid reserve players for allegedly distributing a sexual video featuring a minor, with the arrests heightening the furore about sexism and male behaviour in Spanish football.

The players, who are not minors, were released following a court decision and after the data on their mobile phones was seized, police said in a statement on Thursday.

The case stems from a complaint filed by the mother of a 16-year-old girl in the Canary Islands regarding an alleged recording of sexual relations, police said. They added that while the girl maintained the relations were consensual, the recording took place in June without her consent and that she had recently become aware of it.

The arrests come amid allegations of sexual abuse against the former soccer federation chief Luis Rubiales, who kissed Spain’s World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso on the lips last month, unleashing a wave of indignation.

Rubiales resigned on Sunday after weeks of defying calls for him to step down and is due to appear before a judge on Friday. He maintains that the kiss was mutual and consensual.

Police said the three players had been detained at the Real Madrid sports complex in Madrid and a fourth player was being investigated. One of those arrested is a reserve team player and two play for the third team.

Real Madrid issued a statement saying only that a total of four youth team players had been questioned by police “in connection with a complaint about an alleged release of a private video via WhatsApp” messaging system.

According to El Confidencial newspaper, the main subject of the probe is a player in the third team, who allegedly recorded his sexual relationship with the 16-year-old.

All three are suspected of committing a felony known in Spanish criminal law as “revealing secrets of a sexual nature”, a police spokesperson said.
