Playstation showcase 24th May

Marathon. From the website, "become a runner in bungie’s new sci-fi pvp extraction shooter. compete for survival, riches, and renown in a world of evolving, persistent zones, where any run can lead to greatness."

And, nope.

I was so excited for a moment. I was a hardcore fan of the original Marathon games back in the mid 1990s.

So a few interesting AAA games, a few interesting smaller games, and a ton of games that I wanted to show up that didn't show up. Sounds like an E3.

No The Last of Us: Factions but apart from that absolutely stellar. Loads of must play games and tons of variety.

The first Spider-Man was a very late purchase for me. This one will likely be a day one job.

My current theory, hastily devised in the last minute or so, is that Factions, because it’s likely going to be free to play on PS5 and PC, might be better shown at the Summer Gamefest. Also they premiered it there.

Spiderman 2 looked fantastic. There were quite a few good announcements there, but I was honestly expecting more, particularly from the Sony side. I really thought we'd get at least 1 or 2 other 1st-party trailers.

Maybe The Last of Us multiplayer game is still quite far away.

Yes, possibly. It’s so hard to judge.

It’d make sense for them to get way out ahead of things content wise so they have new elements already in the bag and ready to roll out over time. They did say they’d show us more this year. I honestly think there is a good chance it’ll be at Summer Gamefest but I’m preparing myself for a wait.

There are a lot of games in that showcase I’m genuinely excited for so I’m happy.

Lots of stuff that made me think "Oh, that looks neat!"

Hubba hubba!

The new game with that name also looks preeeeetty sexy:

Everything that was announced with links

The sizzle reel version:

There was nothing stand out jaw dropping for me but a lot of the indies look very interesting and I guess I really need to get to one of spider-man or Miles Morales soon.

Marathon trailer was really impressive. Not sure I'm sold on the game concept though.

The Concord trailer was very cool as well, but I had no idea what the game is about until I looked it up. I'll almost certainly pass, but I might watch the trailer a few more times.

Concord is a PVP shooter by ex-Bungie devs apparently. Feels like a mistake to have not made that clear.

Marathon.

I’m in.

Edit: I love this Marathon trailer with all my being.

Dunno if I'm in, but dang that's nice trailer. So much style.

Thanks for sharing the everything-in-nine-minutes summary, Higgledy.

There were some nice looking things on there, but nothing that looked like a Day One purchase for me until I read some reviews. I'll be keeping an eye out for more detail on:

- Helldivers II
- Sword of the Sea
- Neva

A few other observations:

- There should be an industry standard about every trailer having to contain a minimum amount of representative gameplay
- Pretty thin gruel being served up for the PSVR2
- If the streaming handheld can only be used via wifi, then I'm not really sure that there's a sufficiently large market for it.
- If the earbuds have the full functionality of the Pulse 3D headset... and the damn things actually stay in my ears (most earphone/buds do not), then I'll probably buy those.
- Phantom Blade. I'm getting old. It feels like Ghosts of Tsushima and Sekiro, and sword-y Elden Ring were released only last week.

I’m glad it was useful.

I think those three and the reveal that Teardown was coming to Playstation, contributed massively to my positive impression of the showcase (which appears not to be shared in many quarters.)

To me Ghost of Tsushima has it’s own visual style distinct from the others, despite covering the same subject matter. A lot of these games are using Sekiro as inspiration. Especially Wo Long where the main character could be the Wolf’s twin.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Rise of the Ronin and Phantom Blade (there are others) all look very similar to me, even thought some are set in China and others in Japan. I’m willing to give them all a fair shot though because I love me some intense, human scale sword fights.

All I could think when watching the Phantom Blade trailer was, ‘my reflexes are nowhere near that fast,’ but it sounds like the developer has previously made mobile games and the inputs will be simplified so you’re not doing as many lightening fast button presses as it appears in that trailer.

Edit: A lot more about Marathon.

Just got through the presentation. It was fine. Nothing really shocking but still enough good to make me happy.

The Spider-Man 2 trailer is approaching 20 million views.
