Welcome folks, and happy “230th Anniversary of the only attempted flight of Diego Marín Aguilera” week!
Diego Marín Aguilera was a Spanish inventor. On the night of May 15 1793, he stood at the top of a castle in his home town with a glider he’d made, a cage with flapping wings covered in eagle feathers. He said “I’ll be back in a couple of days” and jumped off. He managed to get 6m high and went about 300m before crashing safely. The townsfolk were not impressed. They said his glider was demonic and burned it. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you crash-land too early and have to fight your way out.
Does anyone have time for a new game right now? Zelda takes more than a week, and I’m still swooshing my mo in Jedi: Survivor. Not to mention everything else from the last month or so. Most publishers have also figured we’re busy this week, leaving an odd assortment of releases that don’t think they’re competing with Star Wars or Zelda.
LEGO 2K Drive is like Burnout: Paradise, but because it’s Lego, your cars transform into different vehicles when going over road, off-road, or water. There’s lots of driving, smashing and collecting on offer.
Humanity is an updated take on Lemmings, with a touch of the anomaly puzzles from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. You guide masses of pedestrian traffic through increasingly fiendish obstacles by placing down orders at different parts of a level. The levels are 3D, so there’s verticality to consider. You start with a small bag of orders: turn, jump, hit, float. Each level has an end square you must reach to get to the next level, and there is no penalty for your humans falling off the edge of the map while you try this.
The challenge, and the real hook of the game, comes from the bonus objectives. These are statues on each level, and you have to get your humans to reach them, then carry them back to the end square in a perfect run. If the statue falls off the map then it goes back to its spot and you restart the level. These statue challenges are bigger head-scratchers but offer the best rewards, including game-changing extra orders like pause, rewind, and repeat.
Warlander is a 3rd-person, multiplayer, medieval siege battle game. You pick a warrior, wizard, or cleric and jump into MOBA-style maps of up to 100 people, divided into 2 - 5 armies. You’re either attacking or defending a castle and there’s lots of large mounted weapons to help you smash the other team, until they turn their large mounted weapons on you.
Gekisou! Benza Race -Toilet Shooting Star- is a kart racer where everyone’s on toilets. It was very memey when it first came out in 2019.
Crusader Kings III: The Royal Court brings last year’s crib upgrade module to consoles.
Greedventory is a side-scrolling Soulslike with point-n-click controls from an adventure game. In combat, you block and swipe on the monsters in real time, like in a Quest for Glory game.
Starship Troopers: Extermination is a multiplayer shooter based on the principle that hey, they did it for Aliens, Predator, and Terminator.
Sometimes you check out a game for the famous people in its title, only to find wolves. Mr.T Survival does not feature any fool-pitying A-Team members, just a white guy stuck on a jungle island with wolves. Love Love Joe Biden: The Joe Biden Dating Simulator, has a tangled storyline about Joe Biden running a retirement home with wolf-men.
This week’s pick is so hypothetical. Humanity looks like a nice palate cleanser you could play in between the bigger games we’re actually playing this week. When we finish them. Eventually. GOTW.
