MLB 2023 Season - The Winter Stove of Warmth

Julio has clearly cooled off, going from supernova to merely nova.

Yeah, they had a stat today. Hitting something like .500 over the last 2 weeks. Mediocre.

Mariners kinda fun right now!

It's been so long that I don't know that I (or my kids) can handle cheering for a team where the games in September really matter. Last year felt like they were a lock for a wild card slot, but weren't close to the division, but this year they're right in the mix for the division.

Yankees won today. If Oakland somehow beats Seattle, they will be tied since the all star break.

Imagine being in Las Vegas, where you have a WNBA champion team in the Aces and a Stanley Cup champion in the Golden Knights and saying to yourselves, "The real secret to sports success is stealing mediocre teams from Oakland!"

Randomly thinking about one of the greatest sporting efforts ever: Phil Niekro’s 1979 season

IMAGE(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F4tUru8W0AAIVPw?format=jpg&name=large)

They had Phil sleeping at the office and throwing knuckleballs in his bathrobe

good, bad, they turned that man into a pitching tajitu, all good things and all bad things were happening in the form of one dude greasing up the ball with a jar of Vaseline he kept under his hat

“I was the minimum definition of winning and the maximum definition of present”

Also, falling firmly under the "funny, but also not funny" banner. Like, it's insane how long it takes security to get a hold of these guys.

As a soccer fan, I see this all the time and all I think to myself is "it only takes one incident to make this a whole lot less cute."

The Angels were done, but now they're done.

I was just talking with one of my coworkers in Tokyo who mentioned how it was a mistake for Ohtani to stay with the Angels. I reminded him that he's an owned property like all players and that without the consent of the owners, he isn't going anywhere. He is convinced that he got injured trying to carry that team on his back.

This sucks, unless you're one of the playoff teams on the bubble.

Really underlines how big some of the all-time HR totals are that Bryce Harper just broke 300.

Like, all the HR power we talk about these days, and there are exactly two active players with >400.

Including Bryce, there are now 12 with >300, and they've ALL been in the MLB for over a decade.

Where do I pitch to this monster... Hmm...

This is from the beginning of the season, but the White Sox still suck, so it's still funny:

It's not the Houston "Asteroids," but it definitely should be now.

One again reminded of how the game has changed, because Pete Alonso is broadly considered the "best hitter" on the Mets.

He's batting .225.

I remember when Rob Deer seemed like an outlier. Now, every team has at least one Rob Deer, a dude who's gonna hit .210 but 1/3 of those hits will be HRs.

Wasn't he already a known piece of shit?

Nods in Phillie.
Our nominal leadoff hitter is batting .192 with 95 hits, 39 HR, 108 BB, and 175 Ks.

Then again, so far tonight we have 8 runs through 3 innings, and he scored two of them.

Also, Anthony Rendon is definitely an all-time worst contract, yes?

2 for 3 tonight, so his average is up to .193 now.

Since the Angels have pretty much given up on the season, there is honestly no rational reason to play Ohtani another inning. He apparently hurt himself again in warmups for last night's game against the Orioles and his agent admits that he will need some sort of procedure in the offseason with a best case scenario of his returning in 2024.

Get him out of a uniform and into treatment now.

I think former team-mate Strasburg still has him beat.

Strasburg pitched 31.1 innings after signing his 245 million dollar contract, which works out to 7.9 million dollars per inning.

let's see how well this ages:

Texas is going to drop like a bomb through balsa wood and the Yanks make the playoffs.

The Rays have a rough stretch coming up. Unless they start playing some of their best ball, they could easily drop 7 of their next 10

Will laugh my ass off if this clusterf*ck of a season ends in a postseason berth.

Bip Roberts.

Another MLB: The Show update:

.........there's no "Auto set lineups/rotations" button, and possibly most egregious, there doesn't appear to be a way to see how much energy your pitchers have left after pitching, so if you re-do your rotation, you could easily end up pitching a guy who pitched 2 days ago.

So, there still isn't an "Auto Lineups/Rotations" command, which is moronic, but you CAN find out how much energy your pitchers/position players have.

You have to go to "Play Game," and then INSTEAD of Player Lock, you have to hit "Play Full Game" and once you choose which team you want to play as, what stadium and what uniforms, THEN you can see the energy levels of your pitchers and position players.

Can you see this in any of the Roster screens? Like when you're setting your lineup outside of a game? Somehow, inexplicably, no (at least on the Switch, not that that's really a good excuse)!

Just deranged UI design, again, by people who realize that Franchise mode is essentially a legacy mode now, not one that you will be consistently developing/changing/updating with time.

PERHAPS CONSIDER NOT PITCHING HIM MIDDLE-MIDDLE.

I'm sure the pitcher(s) would like to do that.
