NFL 2023: The preseason / predraft thread

I'm going to take Carolina's trading of D.J. Moore as a tacit admission that the franchise recognizes the greatness within Laviska Shenault, and expect him to take the league by storm next season.

Report: Buccaneers to target Baker Mayfield in free agency.

Totally worth it for the last three years, but, uh, this season will be:

Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins.

This offseason is getting good.

Rodgers next please.

Stetson Bennett is the hero of 40-somethings like me everywhere, letting us feel like when we grow up and get to his age, maybe we can get NFL drafted too.

Washington signed Daron Payne to a massive deal.

Falcons trade for TE Jonnu Smith from the Patriots. Reuniting Jonnu with Arthur Smith, the coach he was last productive under.

Falcons also sign guard Chris Lindstrom to a big extension.

Chargers RB Austin Ekeler has demanded a trade, after the two sides have failed to come to terms on a contract.

The draft can't get here fast enough.

No article needed, The Onion nails it with just a headline: NFL’s Reinstatement Of Calvin Ridley Sponsored By FanDuel.

Bears are targeting Mike McGlinchey, and will probably give him an aggressive offer to try and lock him down early in the free agency frenzy.

Ravens cut Calais Campbell.

49ers re-sign Tashaun Gipson to a 1-year deal.

Last year, they signed Gipson late in camp and stuck him on their practice squad. But after Jimmie Ward started the season on IR, Gipson became the starter and had a season like his old Pro Bowl self.

He's closing in on retirement, but glad he's coming back for one more year.

WTF

I had to double-check Schefter's blue bird site feed directly, I thought this was fake when I first saw it.

Niners are going all-in on winning by destroying everyone else's QBs.

Guess the Bears weren't aggressive enough, because Denver sniped him, for 5-years, $87.5m.

That $17.5m a year will make him tied for the 4th highest paid right tackle. That's... quite an overpay, but good for McG.

Bucs are shopping Shaq Mason, and will cut him if they don't find a trade partner, so it's making a line that wasn't great last year due to injury bad in new, exciting ways. Good luck to *insert QB name here* next year.

Raiders are supposedly close to signing Jimmy Garoppolo.

Rita Oak is so close to being free!

If you can't stop your own QB's from getting killed, this seems like the second-best solution.

Which means Jimmy is not a Jet!

Perfect.

Jimmy to the Raiders for 3 years, $67.5m, with $34m guaranteed.

$22.5m average for Jimmy G is kind of a steal. I mean the Colts threw $30m/yr at Matt Ryan a year ago. Carr just went for $37.5m/yr and Danny Dimes for $40m/yr.

Guess who else isn't a Jet - their beloved underdog QB of last year, Mike White.

He just signed a 2-year deal to back up Tua in Miami.

sh*t I went to lunch and an appt and the NFL went wild.

Yeah, this looks like a very reasonable deal. Given Jimmy's injury history, though, I don't think they're out of the running for a QB in the draft though, as their current backup (who didn't look that bad in limited time last year) just signed a deal to back up Wilson in Denver.

Bold strategy. Where is all this money coming from? Rookie QB contracts now that Jimmy is gone?

McGlinchey to the Broncos and Jawan Taylor to the Chiefs. They're taking all of Legion's OTs.

Good to see the Raiders signing a veteran QB presence to back up Chase Garbers.

So much for this being an overpay.

The Chiefs just signed Jaguars RT Jawaan Taylor to a 4-year, $80m (!?!) contract. $60m guaranteed.

$20m a year for Jawaan Taylor? That's insane.

Taylor has become a decent pass protector, but one of the league's worst run blockers. Even in pass blocking, though, he's just good, not exceptional. He was like 35th or so in PFF's pass blocking grading among all tackles last year, and that grade seems about right based on my eyes. He was about 65th in total grading, due to his awful run block grades. He's managed to stop being a walking holding penalty, though he's still a bit grabby.

Making him the highest paid right tackle in the league? Paying him only $3m/yr less than Trent Williams? Absolutely nuts.

What would it have cost to keep Orlando Brown? It couldn't be much more than that, and Brown is a significantly better player.

But he didn't get traded...

Agreed. It's a lot easier to draft a project like Anthony Richardson if you have a solid starter in place.

Of course, I wonder how Jimmy will feel with another Trey Lance getting drafted and hanging over his head...

He'll make more than $20 million, and I'm sure plenty of porn stars come to Vegas for work. Jimmy will be fine.
