NFL 2023: The preseason / predraft thread

The accusers disclosed enough.

Rot in the ground, creepy racist old man. I hope the last thing you felt was the shame of knowing how you'll be remembered. You've actually managed to steal the thunder of Jerome Boger is Finally Going Away Day.

I got you CJ:

I mean, QB of a major college program; probably the best athlete on every team he played on growing up. Yeah, he's used to getting anything he wants and having any bad behavior swept under the rug.

Someone's gonna take AR-Not The Gun super high in the draft and he's gonna either be a Pro Bowler or benched by Week 8. Book it.

Report: Eagles emerge as potential landing spot for Patriots assistant Matt Patricia

As if it was not bad enough that the Iggles continued Philadelphia's streak of losing championship games, now we get this?

Looks like Derek Carr is off to the Saints. Nothing official or any numbers yet, but may he suck greatly.

Realistically, it makes the Saints the favorite in the division, because they have an at least decent QB.

They are nowhere near out of salary cap hell and won't be without a crapton of cuts and/or restructures. I don't see them going into the season with the team they have now.

Absolutely. And they're still the favorite, because the division is a garbage fire, and an even vaguely decent offense can carry you. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Carr, Trask, and a couple rookies at QB.

Yup. Which is why the Ravens can't afford to put Lamar on the non-exclusive tag. The Falcons and Panthers would jump at the chance to pick him up for just two ones and neither would blink at shelling out $238m guaranteed.

It definitely looks like Bischiotti is fighting what is ultimately going to be a losing battle on behalf of the NFL owners. If it isn't Jackson, it will definitely be Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, or Lawrence who ends up with the NEXT fully guaranteed bag. And after that, you better believe it will be a Mahomes and Allen coming back for a premature second bite of the apple.

Bischiotti has decided this is a hill he wants to die on, but in the end, it won't stop history. The unity of the owners is not as strong as he hopes it is. And I think he is going to find out that being the last man to say no is going to have its own catastrophic price.

Maybe they feel the need to thank him for not making a single defensive stop against Nick Foles.

Niners are looking to add a veteran QB, in what I'm going to refer to as "Operation: Never Josh Johnson Again". Looks like they want someone with starting experience.

Supposedly names like Baker Mayfield, Mason Rudolph, and Drew Lock are popping up.

Another report suggests Matt Ryan, Jacoby Brissett, and Andy Dalton are being considered.

Last October, I predicted the Niners were going to sign Matt Ryan this offseason. Let's see if I picked the right one.

Is whoever signs for them in that role effectively taking a QB3 job? I wonder how many guys are actually up for that. I suppose it comes down to whether their alternative is not being on a roster at all, and the attraction of being in a contender. Speaking of which, if you're looking for an awesome QB3, I hear Brian Hoyer just became available...

Purdy's health is an unknown at this point. It seems likely that whomever signs will be at least QB2 to start the season. The contract is going to be QB2 money, that's for sure.

Noooooooo nope no we already rode that ride.

You saw how fast QB3 became QB1 on that team.

The good news is that the Niners will draft Jake Haener, who will render all QB questions moot.

Practice, play a few snaps in a blowout or two, and get a super bowl ring. Sounds good to me.

Josh Johnson: "That's what I thought I was doing last year."

You know, Legion, Jameis is likely to be available.

I have a hard time seeing Shanahan choosing Jameis... but yeah, he's going to be on that list of bridge starter caliber guys.

But it seems like taking a guy with a broken back and putting him on the 49ers QB Depth Chart of Doom would be... irresponsible.

Jackson in ATL would be terrifying. From what I've read/heard on podcasts, the ATL and BAL offenses are pretty similar, and he'd be plug-n-play for the Falcons.

I don't get the sense Carolina is interested, partly bc of the price tag and partly because Frank Reich has a type and seems inclined to want to fit a QB into his system versus the other way around. Glad to be wrong, tho. I'd be thrilled to see Lamar in Charlotte.

Carr's deal is 4yrs, $37.5mm/yr, a little less than half guaranteed. Gonna be interesting to see what else the Saints do about their cap situation.

I can't wait for all the "Overpaid for a used Carr" headlines.

I imagine there will probably be an extra void year tacked onto the end of the deal, to make his annual bonus proration be split 5 ways instead of 4 (bonus prorates over a maximum of 5 years, so they can only do one void extra year).

Also probably expect some big guaranteed bonus money pushed out to 2025.

They can make Carr fit, and if Carr is a good starter for 4 years (not an unreasonable possibility, my FRESNO STATE bias aside), the contract itself won't hurt them.

The question though is, OK you got Carr, now what? Are the Saints as-is with Carr a threat to the Eagles, 49ers, Cowboys, Vikings? And if not, what would you have to do to get there?

I think the answer to the first question is "no", and trying to find answers to the second question is where they can get themselves into trouble.

The Saints have two years of cap hell that they need to swallow. They had 3, and they swallowed one last season. If they're not going to eat those years now, but keep pushing it out, they're gonna build that debt back up to 3 years again.

Maybe the idea is that they just try to be as competitive as possible with Carr and their current roster, eat those 2 years, and then come 2025 they'll have a decent cap again with Carr still under contract for 2 more years. That would be a decent way of doing it.

EDIT: OverTheCap doesn't have contract details yet, but they have already put a void year in Carr's table. I see you, Jason.

The league has reinstated Calvin Ridley.

At least the league didn't drag out this BS punishment any longer.

Ridley will now get to be a full offseason participant in Jacksonville.

Yeah, the suspension of Ridley was straight up ridiculous given all the other crazy crap they have let slide with other folks.

The competitive math for the Saints was probably realizing to tank they would have to out suck their division which might be impossible.

Add Carr put an ok team around him and.... Your 2023 NFC South champions the 9-8 Saints. (9-8 might seem generous but they get to play the.... NFC South)

Spoiler:

Could you bet on the date on Draft Kings?
