NFL 2023: The preseason / predraft thread

Is anyone watching XFL this weekend? Do we talk about it here?

I like watching the XFL weekly wrap-up videos, there's some good football in there.

Hey guys. I was watching the beginning of the NFC Championship Game and then I blacked out, and now it's mid-February. Hope I didn't miss anything important.

I saw that the 49ers hired Klint Kubiak to be the 49ers passing game coordinator.

Last time a Kubiak was the top offensive assistant under a Shanahan, they won two rings.

Now Shanahan has two Kubiaks, as the younger brother Klay is the team's QB coach.

Also love that the 49ers hired Steve Wilks as defensive coordinator. Great defensive coach, and just might end up being the next minority coach to bring the Niners extra 3rd round picks when he gets a head job opportunity again.

I was disappointed when Vic Fangio signed in Miami, but a lot less disappointed when Wilks was announced.

Calvin Ridley applied for reinstatement Wednesday, the first day he was eligible to do so.

Assuming that goes smoothly, this may turn out to be a sneakily great trade for the Jags. Christian Kirk has worked out, but they need another starting WR to push Zay Jones down the depth chart where he belongs.

As a fan of a divisional rival I'm trying to find something to disagree about, but I can't. This is a great hire.

It's a TERRIBLE HIRE!

For the Seahawks, Rams and Zona.

Packers are disgusted with Rodgers and are done with him.

Enjoy your darkness, Aaron. In your retreat, and on the Jets.

Well.

Bye.

Eric Bieniemy to become the OC for the Commanders. He does know that going from being a chief to a commander is only considered a promotion in the Navy, right?

That we explains all the snaps they gave to Love last season...

When it comes to the Niners D, I don't think people around the league realize how much there's a tail-wags-dog situation there.

The defensive identity is determined not by the defensive coordinator, or even Shanahan, but by defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, whose implementation of the "Wide 9" defensive fronts is what drives San Francisco's relentless pass rush.

Kocurek is kind of a unicorn. He outright rejects every opportunity to move "up" from a defensive line coach. He's stated publicly multiple times that he has no interest. He's like a senior engineer who shoos away the bigwigs when they try to promote him up to management.

With defensive coordinator once again opened up in San Francisco, Kocurek again refused to move off of D-line. Instead, when the team interviewed Steve Wilks for the job, Wilks had to spend time with Kocurek and win his approval.

Have you ever heard of a positional coach interviewing a coordinator candidate, his future superior, to make sure the coordinator will mesh with what the positional coach wants? I never have. But with Kocurek, I get it.

Obviously, the coordinator in SF is still important - somebody's gotta worry about the other 7 guys on defense - and as such, I'm happy for the Wilks hire. Wilks's expertise and experience is in the secondary, so being told to worry about the back 7 and leave the D-line to Kocurek probably suits him just fine. But no matter how you slice it, Kocurek and his defensive line dictates what the Niners D does, and everything else schematically is built around supporting that.

You all are sitting really well there in SF for the next couple years. Going to be scary good!

And cool story about the D Line coach. Pay him whatever he wants!

This is exactly what I would say to Jed York if ever I were to meet him. Don't ever let the guy feel like he has to change jobs to avoid hitting a ceiling.

I strongly suspect Kocurek is exceptionally well paid for a position coach. I've got to credit York, he's shown himself willing to open his wallet and be the opposite of "penny wise, pound foolish".

Dude is living his best life in Charlotte.

When the Panthers announce their QB competition between Jacoby Brissett, Sam Darnold, and Matt Corral:

I've never seen Jim so excited/enraged/potentially dead seriously has anyone checked

Eh, they can just transplant one from Matt Corral. That's the only reason Carolina is going to keep him on the roster: for parts.

"Caldwell! Scrub up for surgery! Bryce needs that new AC joint stat!"

Matt Corral is a skinny boi himself. His parts should indeed fit. Logic checks out.

Brock Purdy's surgery has been postponed due to inflammation. Note that his doctor is the team physician of the Texas Rangers, now managed by Bruce Bochy, who used to manage the San Francisco Giants of that team's dynasty era that bridged the gap between the Niners dynasty years and the Golden State Warriors. IT'S ALL CONNECTED!

That's 2023 Dom Capers who still has the hair of 1995's Dom Capers.

Carolina sure is stacking their interim coach depth chart.

It'll take 1-2 more interim candidates to fully rid the Panthers' facility of the stink of the previous regime.

More seriously, tho, it's nice to see the Panthers put together a staff with some legit NFL experience.

The former HC-OC-DC trio had seven years of NFL coaching experience when they started in 2020.

The new crew? Frank Reich (22 seasons, rounded), OC Thomas Brown (3, plus some brief playing experience) and DC Ejiro Evero (15 seasons) combine for 40.

Netflix announces a quarterback docu series focusing on Patrick Mahomes, Marcus Mariota, and... Kirk Cousins. Can we get a Skip Cousins button?

So I assume the Mariota segment will be the "how to quit on your team" portion of the show to add some spice.

Part One is about an insanely talented player taking his team to the heights of competition. Typical NFL Films type glory worship. The player's father features prominently and is the break out star of the show.

Part Two is a coming-of-age story where a player gets drafted with high hopes and then goes on to live a life as a a regular person.

Part Three is a documentary about cults.
