NFL 2022: Super Bowl LVII thread

I was reminded that today is the 35th anniversary of Doug Williams becoming the first Black quarterback to start in a Super Bowl and the first Black quarterback to win as a quarterback in a Super Bowl. I was also reminded that my birthday used to coincide with Super Bowls, meaning that in my youth I not only got all the presents I wanted every few Super Bowls but I also got the best snacks. Stupid playoff expansion.

Tom Brady retires again…for now. What a tool.

He needs to become minority owner and general manager of the Washington Commanders while playing quarterback badly to complete his legacy. This is the Michael Jordan Way. The only path of a GOAT.

Somewhere Greg Olson sheds a tear, and we are all worse off.

Glad he retired. Can't imagine Bucs Legend Tom Brady ever having worn another jersey.

Nobody should believe a word this man says, but it did look like some of his throws in the wild card game was lacking in strength.

As the season went on, his arm got weaker. I mean, he's 45, so, shocker, but it's the first time you could really tell age was catching up with him. Would have been happy if he'd retired last year and spared himself this crappy year.

Fun fact stolen from Reddit:

NFC South QBs currently under contract for next season: #Falcons: • Desmond Ridder • Marcus Mariota #Bucs: • Kyle Trask #Panthers: • Matt Corral • Jacob Eason #Saints: • Jameis Winston • Jake Luton

And you thought the division was bad this year . . .

I'll believe it when the 3rd string from the 49ers gets injured next year and he doesn't show up.

Panthers just hired Deuce Staley away from the Lions and might be going after J.B. Cooter, now with the Jags.

Yeah, yeah, the Lions and Jags. Not exactly offensive forces before this season. But better than guys whose last stops were at Temple and Baylor.

SAY HIS FULL NAME!

Come on…your a grown ass man saying this sh*t.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. JFK got back up and was fine for a year before he was shot again?

For those of you with no direct rooting interest in the 57th edition of the Superb Owl, The Ringer is out with its 2023 draft guide.

Spoiler alert: It's predicting that the Panthers will trade all of their draft picks, South Carolina and Nicole Tepper to the Bears to move up to the No 1 spot and grab Alabama QB Bryce Young.

The rest of the draft guide is a good exercise in who's available and what teams might be looking. The scouting reports are pretty detailed -- not Legion detailed, but good enough for semi-casual NFL fans.

I think Daniel Jeremiah's first draft had the Panthers taking Anthony Richardson from Florida to fill their QB slot, and, if there's an owner who's definitely got the patience for a long rebuild while developing a "physical tools but so darn raw" guy like Richardson, it's definitely Tepper. I laughed at that one.

I have no doubt Carolina will try to move up to the No 1 overall. Whether they'll get there or not, eh, who knows.

Does Tampa have any picks worth trading? Or will the Bucs sink back into the QB hellswamp along w the rest of the NFC South. What an ugly, ugly division that's going to be next year.

Frankly, I’ve done a 180 on Romo. When he was the fair-haired boy of broadcasting, I didn’t get it. Now that people seem to be getting sick of his shtick, I’m used to it. It’s familiar. It’s comfortable. His unbridled enthusiasm and stray sound effects and non-sequiturs are like an old friend whose flaws are more endearing than irritating.

This me.

I know, never read the comments, BUT ... it's amusing that they're filled with this guys is great followed by no, he sucks. I'm about half-way down and I feel like everyone has been covered at this point. There's no single announcer who everyone can agree is good.

Edit: Special shout-out to the guy (presumably) who likes Aikman because he acts like a man.

Uuuuuuuhhhh I DUNNO, JIM

What else could he be acting like? A tree? A giraffe?

Aikman used to be boring, but now he's starting to move into cranky old man mode where he just doesn't have to give a sh*t anymore, and he gets pissed off at terrible play and calls it out. Aikman calling a good game is a lot less fun than Aikman calling a bad game.

Whenever I hear his voice my chain of consciousness is:

Lantern-jawed
Green Lantern
Hal Jordan
Hal Jordan turned evil
Ryan Reynolds was GL
Ryan Reynolds is buddies with Rob McIlhenny
Sunny should TOTALLY do an episode where Aikman is really a supervillain

Or, just hear me out, there's a new Green Lantern show coming to HBO Max in the near future...

Titans to install artificial turf replacing their grass to prevent injuries?

Apparently their weather zone makes it hard to upkeep a proper grass field.

This seems dubious to me.

Nissan Stadium will become the first stadium in the league to use technology that features a "monofilament, Matrix Helix turf with an organic infill that retains moisture better than synthetic fields using rubber." This surface is also used at their practice field as of last year.

Well ok then.

Also Aaron Rodgers has ruled out going to the 49ers. This f*cking guy. I guess being out of the news feed since Tuesday for whatever he said on McAfee's show was long enough.

I honestly can't wait for him to f*ck off and watch him throw the whole Packers org under the bus on the way out.

You have to assume there's a certain amount of f*ck that guy animosity building up in the locker room. Would be 0 surprised if he was traded the remaining team rallies around whoever is the starter out of spite.

I am so ready for the packers to make a Russell Wilson type trade and someone steps up and Genoes his way to the playoffs without Qaron

Genuinely didn't realize until today that it's a matchup of two black QBs.

I assume Clay Travis et al have been calling it the "Woke Bowl."

I still don't know who to root for, but Pat Mahomes is giving Bart Scott and Richard Sherman a run for their money in post game quotes:

Smoking on that Joe Burrow.

I thought they'd go for "is Mahomes really Black?"
