Welcome folks, and happy “144th Anniversary of the jury verdict in Whistler v Ruskin” week!

In 1877, the artist James Whistler sued art critic John Ruskin for libel after Ruskin’s review of Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket said that Whistler was “flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face”. The trial in 1878 was one of the most famous of its time and included lengthy dissertations on the purpose and processes of both art and criticism. The trial backfired for Whistler, though: he was counting on many of his artist friends to testify for him, but they refused, fearing for their own reputations. The jury found in Whistler’s favour, but awarded him only a farthing in nominal damages, and split the court costs. Whistler’s share of the court costs bankrupted him and he lost a lot of patronage from the adverse publicity. His career recovered, however, and he went on painting and getting into spats with celebrities for another 25 years. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you carry a cantankerous companion right through to the endgame.

Wowee, December’s here. Time to start thinking about GOTYs and whether there’s any games left on the 2022 schedule that can make a late entry onto the list.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is the last game on my 2022 wishlist. Made by Firaxis and Jake Solomon, who did the XCOM series, it started out as “XCOM with Marvel heroes”. That was enough to sell me, but apparently during development, they discovered that a lot of XCOM-style play doesn’t translate to superheroes. Captain Marvel doesn’t hunker behind cover. Iron Man doesn’t miss a 90% chance to hit. Spider-Man doesn’t lose his chance to move after shooting webs. And so on.

So they went back to the drawing board and rebuilt the battle system from the ground up. It’s still turn-based, but the action economy is dictated by cards, where each card is a hero’s ability. Heroes can move more freely, there is no cover, and the randomness factor comes not from a chance to hit, but the cards you draw. You may draw cards that all belong to one hero, allowing them to go on a super streak, but more often you will be planning how to use a hero’s ability in the most devastating way possible and setting up cool combos between heroes. It looks more immediate than XCOM: you won’t be setting up a firing zone in a few turns’ time but working out what you can do this turn to clear the board.

Outside of combat, you can do things to improve your cards and get new ones. This takes the form of hanging out at your HQ, exploring the grounds, and having RPG conversations with your heroes. Perhaps surprisingly for a Firaxis game, this narrative side is about half the game. One thing the MCU hasn’t had much chance to explore is heroes just hanging out—some of my favourite comics back in the day were as much soap opera as action movie: the heroes chillaxing at base, having petty dramas, or reflecting on the existential threat that was looming in the next issue.

The storyline is based on a relatively obscure Midnight Sons comics run from the 1990s and includes some heroes and villains you know, plus many more that haven’t had their time in the MCU. Those that are recognizable from the MCU are not their MCU versions. Dr Strange is more eccentric, for example. It’s all at a PG level and there are some deep-cut easter eggs for the diehard comic fans.

The Callisto Protocol is the spiritual remake of Dead Space. The devs feature alumni from that series, and it’s a similar kind of game: third-person monster killing, with your vital stats on the back of your neck. Ammo is limited, and your hero moves slowly, keeping you stressed at all times. Strategic dismemberment is back: you have to make every shot count, targeting different body parts for different enemy types. I bounced off of the original Dead Spaces, but if you liked those, this looks like a worthy successor.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will be on many folks’ wishlist. It’s Left 4 Dead-style co-op, horde fighting. This was already done in the popular Warhammer: Vermintide games, but Darktide takes it to a new space setting and makes a few tweaks. Gun combat has been added to the melee. There’s 4 classes to choose from, but instead of choosing from presets, you’ll be able to design and customise your own character. There’s also tweaks to missions, with secondary objectives and mutators that add extra conditions into the mix. And how else do you flesh out a game’s upgrade systems? With some crafting, of course.

Soccer Story is a 2D-Zelda inspired, adventure RPG where you roam around a world where soccer has been banned, and you have a magic soccer ball that you use to discover environmental secrets and battle enemies. It’s kind of like the Yesterday movie of soccer. Well done to the devs on getting this out during the World Cup, but calling it Soccer Story shows that it doesn’t come from a country that is actually any good at the beautiful game.

Gundam Evolution is a console port of the Overwatch-with-mechs game that came out on PC in September.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is my GOTW. It’s different from what I was expecting, but still looks engaging. Jake Solomon did a great job boiling down the original XCOM to a more streamlined experience for the reboot, and I have confidence that his design chops will shine for this new system. I’m also interested in how the game delivers on the RPG narrative side. My thumbs will definitely enjoy a change of pace after a few blistering weeks of pulling combos in God of War: Ragnarok.

Comments

Very tempted by both Midnight Suns and Callisto Protocol. I shall let it lie for a few days and read some reviews.

I'm hanging out for Midnight Suns, day one. I nommed all of God of War Ragnarok and am ready.
