It's also mobile-only.
Oh, then I'll never sign up, because a BIG part of weaning myself off too much social media was getting that sh*t off my phone.
And the only way to delete your Threads account is to delete your Instagram. You can “deactivate” to hide it but the data will still sit on their servers.
Not sure how much I'm going to use it, but I did manage to get up and running on Bluesky and I'm ready to follow some fellow Goodjers: iandorsch.bsky.social

Being mobile only also seems to preclude Threads as a platform for journalism and activism, which may be the point.

Can’t provide a verified source yet but the rumour mill I saw was around every Instagram account already having a coincident Threads account and the “creating account” is merely consenting to the activation and linking of those accounts. Which if true seems like the perfect Zuck move.
And that's the upside Threads has over Mastodon and Bluesky: they already got the infrastructure in place to handle all these Twitter expats. The downsides are that it's mobile-only right now and it's from the guy who started this whole social media mess in the first place.
I remember reading about Spill being founded by some ex Twitter employees and hoping to recapture Black Twitter™. I'd prefer they succeed over most of the other alternatives.
But looks like it's only on iOS for the app and still on a wait list on the web site. Would have been nice to be ready for influx of users this week. Apparently bluesky wasn't really ready either since they turned off signups.
So I wait for somewhere else to go...
Has anyone found a good Android app for Lemmy? I've tried Jerboa and Liftoff, but both have the sort of annoyances that I can live with, but would rather not if I don't have to. They both default to showing me all posts from my instance, and don't remember my setting when I switch to only showing me posts from subs (is that still what we're calling them?) that I'm subscribed to, stuff like that.

Sync, my preferred 3rd party reddit app, is working on an app for Lemmy. It's supposedly 5-6 weeks from launch though.

Why do I bother explaining it myself when a Simpsons meme will do?
Does an Instagram account need to be tied to a Facebook account? So, say I haven't logged into Facebook in about a decade and don't have access to the email I would have used for it anymore. Will I be able to make an account if everybody ends up going there?
Without wanting to sound like I've got it all figured out, I can say that a social-media-free life is really quite nice, and I encourage you all to consider nuking every account on every platform and never looking back.

I don’t think they need to be tied together- mine aren’t, but I had accounts for both way before Facebook bought Instagram.

Tried it a couple years back and it suuuuucked. I always felt out of touch and didn’t understand half of what my friends/coworkers were talking about. Real boomer energy.
Mostly what I notice on Facebook is that I'll buy something, and then it will start serving me up ads for the exact thing I just bought. Only, I just bought it, and I don't need redundant copies of it, or even if I did, I already know about it and that I like it and where to buy it, so the ads are pointless.
An argument can be made that the entire targeted advertising boom pioneered by Google is a con game that brings virtually no value to advertisers. They meant to stop wasting money advertising to people who were never going to buy them anyway, and wound up wasting money advertising to people who were always going to buy them anyway.
Right beneath the J-Lo post was a post from MTV about some new Taylor Swift thing. How is it so bad?

I signed up for Threads linked w/ my Instagram but Threads was using my IRL name. On silly places like Twitter and Instagram I don't like using it, so for Threads I used my Instagram name and them being linked, they became my fake Rosencranz N Gildenstern name.
Of course, being linked to Facebook, my Facebook name is also now Rosencranz, and I can't fix it for 6 months. I just have to wait for my family to ask me where my Facebook account went and explain that one.
Oh well. 1st World Problems.
Isn't it easy enough to create a new Insta account and tie your Threads account to that?
I have a Bluesky invite, first reply gets it.
Gimme
Mute and move on
I gave threads a look as someone who never really got into Twitter and meh.
I could see how it would be serviceable once I mute out all the noise that I didn't want to see on IG to begin with.
One deal breaker is I'd want to use it to centralize all my news sources. The catch is Meta + news don't vibe.
So my news would just be then the news breakers? My Woj^10 feed? Not sure if I'd remember to open that daily.
I’ve got another Bluesky invite code, free to the first reply.

I'll try out Threads when they have a web version. I'm not installing their app on my phone.
