Welcome folks, and happy “136th Anniversary of the debut of the first tuxedo” week!

On October 10 1886, Pierre Lorillard turned up to the autumn ball at Tuxedo Park, near New York, wearing a short black jacket without tails and a black bow tie. Up until then, the fashion for formal wear was a jacket with tailcoats and a white bow tie. The new suit caught on quickly and was named after the place it was first worn. Tuxedos have never really gone out of style since: they went predominantly blue in the 1930s, then every colour during the disco 1970s, and have returned to strict black or dark blue in recent years. You may all celebrate by playing GoldenEye 007.

It’s a week of surprise goodies: the pace is picking up!

Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia is a sequel to the Asterix & Obelix XXL series by Microids. It’s an isometric, third-person, co-op brawler as Asterix and Obelix tear through legions of hapless Romans. It looks way more polished than the XXL games, with a lot more environmental destruction, powerup mechanics, and other bells and whistles to keep the levels engaging. This is the closest that one of these Asterix games has come to being fun enough to play on its own and not just for nostalgia value.

Star Trek: Prodigy - Supernova is based on the animated Nickelodeon Star Trek series that I did not know about until I typed this sentence. It’s a third-person, action/adventure game where you play as 2 of the main cast members, visiting different planets, solving puzzles, and doing some combat. You can play it solo, switching between characters and their differing skill sets, or in local or online co-op. There’s heaps of fanservice on offer, with most of the main cast lending their voices, and rumour has it that Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew, makes an appearance.

LEGO Bricktales is the first LEGO game where you actually assemble the LEGO pieces yourself, rather than hold a button and watch things come together. The overworld is littered with puzzles, like a chasm that needs a bridge over it. You go to a building screen, where you get a set of specific blocks to use, and no instructions. You rotate and snap the blocks into place on a 3D grid, then test the physics of your build to make sure it can do the job. Once you get it right, you load back to the overworld and put your build to work. There’s a number of differently-themed levels, all presented with trademark LEGO sheen, plus the promise that more levels can be bolted on later. It looks pretty neat. My only misgiving is about whether the block placement controls might be fiddly with a controller.

No More Heroes III is coming out of its Switch ‘sclusy time and onto the other platforms. The Switch version is sitting at 75 on Metacritic, with a lot of the reviews marking it down for technical performance. These issues should be solved on stronger hardware.

Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is another action-RPG based on Greek and Roman mythology. It’s a slightly darker Immortals: Fenyx Rising, like they stirred in a few spoonfuls of Elden Ring. You won’t drop your XP when you die, though. The combat is also not as punishing as a Soulsike: your hero has 6 weapon sets, each with their own skill trees to upgrade, and she can equip 2 at a time and switch between them mid-combo. You can choose your own build and max out your faves, or try a bit of everything as the situation demands. Enjoyment of the combat will probably be less about having deep systems to master, and more about how much you like wailing on minotaurs and hydra. The punishment factor comes from the story, which features surprisingly heavy choice’n’consequence. Major NPCs can die, and there are multiple ways to deal with bosses, which can branch the story pretty severely.

Unusual Findings is a Stranger Things/Goonies kinda game about kids in the 1980s discovering supernatural stuff. The 1980s nostalgia is laid on thick, from the pixel-art style that makes it look like a Sierra game to the soundtrack and constant movie references. It’s point’n’click adventuring where you play as one of 3 buddies, and the other 2 are constantly by your side. You have to maintain your relationship with them through the choices you make during the story. Stick your neck out for one of them early on, and they’ll have your back later. Like a lot of games and movies I saw as a kid in the 1980s, the content gets surprisingly gory and “mature”. This looks like a better Stranger Things game than Stranger Things: The Game.

The Last Oricru is an action RPG by Czech developers. It’s a weird, eurojanky blend of fantasy and sci-fi, featuring humanoid rats and lots of moral choices between factions during quests. Though you can play solo, if you play co-op there’s extra features, like being able to bounce spells off of your teammate or create an energy beam between you that torches anyone caught in it.

The Eternal Cylinder looks like it was generated in No Man’s Sky. You wander around alien environments, controlling weirdo critters that look like a saggy Q*bert: a ball with an elephant trunk and two arm-legs. You collect as many as you can and they suck stuff up with their trunks to evolve and unlock different abilities. Then you can switch between them during play. Your herd of critters can get quite large, and they need food and water. All this while you have to keep a giant flaming death cylinder from destroying the planet.

Saint Kotar is a psychological horror adventure game set in a cursed Croatian village where you switch POV between two brothers. Something to get you in the mood for Halloween.

Kamiwaza: Way of the Thief is a remake of a 2006 PS2 game by the devs of Tenchu. It’s Bushido-era stealth that looks just like a Tenchu game.

It’s a close one this week. The Eternal Cylinder is so weird that you want to know more, and is the dark horse this week. LEGO Bricktales would be great to play with the kids. If I were choosing just for myself, I’d pick Asterigos: Curse of the Stars as GOTW. Wailing on minotaurs and hydra goes a long way.

Comments

Played Eternal Cylinder when it was first released on xbox like a year ago- it’s beautiful and fun for the first few hours but gets repetitive pretty quickly. Trailers make it seem like the Cylinder is a constantly moving threat you have to stay ahead of but those sections only last a few minutes before it stops to make room for puzzle platforming and it doesn’t resume until you find the solution to get it moving again, at which point you dash to the next area and start over.

I am intrigued by The Case of the Golden Idol and Sunday Gold. I also chuckled at the sight of a 1997 soccer game (Actua Soccer 2) on this list.

My son played The Eternal Cylinder last year (this new version is a next-gen update - plus a Steam launch, as it was an Epic timed exclusive previously). It's a game that really goes all-in with the weirdness and is unlike anything else I've ever seen. I hope it gets some attention.

There is a Next Fest demo available.
