One of my all time favourite puzzle solving moments was in Riven.

Spoiler:

I arrived in a room with small, open well at one end. Suspended above the well was a shallow metal dish with a raised lid of matching size. Next to the well was a bowl of pellets. I established that the lid for the dish could be closed or open and that you could lower the dish into the well.

Lowering the dish empty did nothing. I lowered it with a pellet in the dish and the lid up.When I brought it back up nothing had changed. The pellet was still there. I lowered it with the lid down and a pellet in the dish with the same result. Having gone through every permutation I was a bit stumped until it occurred to me that, if you were trying to attract something with the pellet, you might have to wait for it to see and approach the bait. It felt like an bit of an overly elaborate idea but I lowered the open dish with a pellet in it.

After waiting quite some time I heard a distant ‘clang.’ Pulling up the dish I saw the lid was down. Raising the lid I revealed that the pellet was gone and in it’s place was a tiny frog.

Oh yes! That one is an absolute gem.

Antichulius, I really hope you get to Exile at the very least because that one is amazing and it even has Brad Dourif!
… can you tell it’s my favorite?

Zork Nemesis is pretty much my favorite adventure game of all time and there IS some gore in it, so maybe be aware of that:

Spoiler:

That whole “get a corpse out of the morgue, chop the head off, hook it up to electricity, and then interrogate the very creepy dude to get the code to a safe” thing

I played Exile myself back in like 2003 or 2004 and really enjoyed it, plus it can have such a fulfilling and pleasing resolution at the end. And the music!! It's not quite my favorite in the series, but it's high on the standings for sure. It's also a nice cap on the first 3 and makes a good stopping point if you'd rather not go on to the later games. I'd like to play it again with my kids if their interest keeps up.

And thanks for the Zork Nemesis note. I honestly don't remember that puzzle at all, but I remember being truly creeped out by the whole game when I was like 13-14, so it'll be a while before I even consider it as a family event, if at all But I really should play it myself again. It was really quite good. I think I have it on GOG...
