NFL 2022: The Week 1 thread

Check that, Cleveland FG from 60.

It probably shouldn't have been that close. The Browns ran over the Panthers all game, and Baker was awful for about three quarters. To his credit he was pretty good in the fourth. Turns out he's a pretty good passer when he has a guy running wide open deep.

The only encouraging sign was that Carolina mounted a comeback, the first recorded attempt of the Matt Rhule era. Progress!

Way to many experts think the Eagles will be good which means they will stink.

Not sure that today's game will change minds either way.

Yeah it’s not really a win when you give up 35 points to Jared “smells like cabbage” Goff.

TJ Watt may have torn a pectoral muscle and thus may be done for the year.

Jawan James looks like he's done for the year as well with a torn achilles.

I hate the Saints winning, but love the fact the Falcons choked away yet another big lead.

So in week 1 we already have 1 tie, and came within 5 seconds of having two (both by the same score at that).

What he said.

Meanwhile, Panthers Twitter is melting down over WTF REFS THAT WAS A BS ROUGHING CALL when it's clear that Brian Burns tried to decapitate Jacoby Brissett by ramming his helmet into his chin.

Panthers screwed themselves for most of the day. They didn't need the refs' help to lose it.

The Giants won a football game! An actual football game! A professional football game!

He's going to get decapitated, isn't he?

Picked the wrong QB. At least Mayfield was still wrong.

Titans FG wide left. Ouch

Tough loss for the Patriots mostly because it was a great chance to win at Miami. They lost on a handful of bad plays (the strip sack, the Agholor fumble, the 4th and 7 play) and that's it. But apart from that awful play at the end of the first half, the Dolphins offense only got two FGs. Then again, Pats gave up their last shot on another fumble. Pretty unlucky to recover zero of four fumbles but they still gotta be way better than that.

That's... wow.

It’s pretty easy to say what you want when no one’s watching.

Tom Brady has passed George Blanda for the most passing yards after the age of 45. Also, he is still a pretty good football player.

Two turnovers were the result of completely oblivious missed protection by the offense. Rocket scientist....

Edit: Sorry if I'm coming off as completely pessimistic but I have never liked Patricia. His "Bend but don't break defence" always broke at the worst possible times. I have no faith in him as an offensive schemer.

There's nothing more therapeutic than the Cowboys losing.

It's extra special for me with McCarthy as the coach.

Well, it didn't break in SB49. And I could cite to more examples, but the point is, every time they lost, you're going to think "oh, it broke at the worst possible time." Or now "oh the blew a coverage at the worst possible time." It's time to get used to not making the AFCCG every year. Every normal team has its struggles and weaknesses.

Most entertaining part of SNF (outside of the Cowboys losing) is Collinsworth sounding like he's just gotten off a redeye from Vegas after a bender.

The punt that hit the jumbotron takes third place.

That's where we differ. It broke big time. We just lucked out from play calling of the opponent and a player who later got benched, in the worst superbowl defense in history, bailed him out.

Even weirder, they were the only NFC East team to lose today so they are in last place.

Stop The Count.

Dak will apparently be out "several weeks." Seems a bit too quick for a medical diagnosis like that but it looks pretty bad.

I hate Tom Brady.

I think you missed the point.

Week one optimism is so delicious.

A winless Texans team tied for first in the division. The Cowboys and Bengals in last place. A winless Seahawks team leading their division.

Small sample sizes are always hilarious.

How so? They won the referenced Superbowl and I still thought it broke at the worst possible time

Week 1 (Over)Reactions:
- QAaron is dust. He'll retire 4 games in and become a co-host on the Joe Rogan Podcast. (seriously there's no way he doesn't join Outkick with his own podcast show, right!?)
- The Bengals luck has dried up and they'll come uber crashing down back to earth. 8-9 team at best. 5-12 is within their range of outcomes.
- Has there ever been a better period of consistently high level WR play? Kupp, JJeff, Chase, Davante, Diggs, Pitman all has 100+ yard days and obliterated their opposition
- Jimmy G Cowboys SZN incoming
- In the 2022 NFL where all teams are searching for competent 3rd receiver play and it's generally accepted you need 3 strong pass catchers to win consistently, the Cowboys have opted for the one WR2 and a bunch of dudes off the street approach which lead to one of the most boring games I've watched in a while. Cowboys should just tank for a new QB/coach/GM
- Lol wut was Flacco doing? 5.2 Yards/Attempt. 8.3 Yards/Completion. That Breece Hall Tradeup looks real smart.

So, the Bucs clearly have a loaded WR room, and had some hard decisions to make in camp. Godwin's return was pretty great and he had a nice long catch and run on the first ball he caught before having a hamstring injury. There's a lot of options, so . . . why is Breshad Perriman still getting the ball thrown at him deep? I kind of feel like in year 7 of your career as an NFL WR your catch rate should be, you know, over 50%.

Very solid all-around defensive performance. Devin White and Shaq Barrett were great, and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is hopefully starting to show up a bit. I will say there was not enough Angry Jerry Cam by NBC. Jerry Jones' face when the Cowboys are getting their butts kicked is always a damn good time.
