NFL 2022: The training camp thread

Are we sure it's ALL on the OL or did Russ bail on plays because he couldn't make reads early in the middle of the field?

Russ's avoidance of the middle of the field certainly didn't help, and some teams were able to key in on that. Granted, there's only so much keying in on it you can do, because you still need people in the middle of the field to account for run gaps, especially against a team that was often a top 5 running offense (and would be every year if Pete had his druthers). Still, PFF charting of pressures would certainly argue that Russ was one of the QBs who generated an outsized amount of his own pressures.

But when you have a QB with a certain skill set, and that skill set is good enough to win a championship, your roster building strategy should revolve around supporting that skill set, and patching up its deficits. Russ might need a better O-line to work his magic than, say, Mahomes does to work his, but if you're the team that has Russell Wilson, that offensive line's got to be top priority.

I will argue to my grave that Seattle left at least one (if not more) rings on the table due to the combination of hiring/keeping scrub offensive coordinators, and not building the offensive line that would better support the Russ play style. There was some dynasty potential that was squandered.

I see what you did there. And even "joint fights" might be an understatement:

Good news Panthers fans, you're definitely getting a new coach next year, because I'm pretty sure Belichick is going to make sure Rhule's body is never found.

Fixed.

Or you can just say Enix.

If anyone knows how to break the Rhule, it's Belichick.

Yep. Belichick was trolling Rhule before the joint practices by saying he had done a great job at Temple and Baylor and then calling him "a football guy."

The full football guy quote was "He’s a football guy, so we have a lot in common there. We really enjoy football.”

That comment literally describes everyone who posts here and millions of other folks, too.

Agreed.

And agreed.

It really was the second coming of the Cowboys there for a minute in 12-14.

Hehe, that's classic Belichick. There was a Reddit post a while ago about how he describes all the QBs that suck saying "he can make all the throws."

Google "Belichick 'can make all the throws'", and the first page of results will have Belichick saying this about:

* Zach Wilson
* Baker Mayfield
* Sam Darnold
* Jameis Winston
* Dwayne Haskins
* Brandon Weeden

You also get a hit for Justin Herbert, but in that one, he was saying a lot of other praise in addition to being able to make all the throws.

As far as I can tell, Belichick says this about pretty much everyone's starting quarterback. It's just that with the scrubs, it's almost the only thing he says, so it stands out more.

Dammit, I should have posted "There's no better Rhule breaker in the history of the NFL than Bill Belichick."

I am not sure how suspensions work, but is he allowed to participate in group practices while suspended? Will he return in week 13 without having practiced at all?

Goodell chickened out. A disappointment once again.

No practice. He will not be allowed at the team facility during the suspension. But since it is a number-of-games suspension instead of the indefinite suspension, it doesn't actually go into effect until Week 1. Watson will be able to complete training camp and preseason, and won't have to go away until the start of the regular season.

Deshaun Watson on why he accepted a settlement if he claims he’s innocent: “I’ve always been able to stand on my innocence and always said I never assaulted or disrespected anyone but at the same point I have to continue to push forward with my life and career.”

Deshaun Watson on why he’s apologizing then: “For everybody that was affected by this situation. There were a lot of people that were triggered.”

I don't know what's worse, the suspension or the CLE fans who are celebrating today.

It's only fitting that Watson is suspended less than half a game per assault, as the NFL doesn't consider women to be whole people.

Diddy is going to have to shut the studio down again..

Well at least we know that Watson himself is worse than both.

SO IF YOU THINK OF LAST YEAR IT'S REALLY MORE LIKE A SEASON AND A HALF SUSPENSION PLENTY OF TEAMS WANTED HIM NOT JUST THE BROWNS HE SAID HE WAS SORRY AND EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE RIGHT WHO DOESN'T LIKE A MASSAGE PLUS THE CBA SAYS

Like, truly, astonishingly odious.

You never got an acquittal f*ckhead. "Declining to indict" does not mean "proven innocent."

No way am I rooting for the Browns as long as that POS is on the team.

Here’s to fans at every road game chanting “you sick f*ck”

How did the NFL buy off on this, "Innocent yo!" settlement?

Indefinite suspension until he shows some level of contrition? Nothing stops Goodell from doing that.

whispa wrote:

Fixed. The Haslams have long been thought to be the driving force behind the team's pursuit of Watson. And even the best-case scenario is that they simply agreed to it, and then began carrying water for Watson throughout the process.

@MySportsUpdate wrote:

GM Andrew Berry said the team put together a plan as soon as they traded for Deshaun Watson about how he would get future massages for any soft-tissue injuries.

He did not specify if they are male or female. Owner Jimmy Haslam said the therapists will be team-approved.

Geoff Schwartz gets it in one:

All that guaranteed money to a player who the team can’t trust to get a massage. It’s all so gross.

And speaking of Haslam, really selling "leader of men" here, isn't he?

The most absurd thing about the Watson punishment is that the league has allowed him to continue to claim innocence.

How is a guy who thinks he has done nothing wrong supposed to get anything from treatment?

Admitting guilt should have been a BARE MINIMUM requirement for getting this softball of a penalty.

Goodell had this whole thing lined up perfectly, and managed to biff it, because they were so scared of the union challenging it in court, even though the league would have been following the collectively bargained system to the letter.

At any rate, the Browns have announced that Watson won't participate in any further preseason games, though he will continue to practice with the team until the week 1 practices start.

Wasn't exactly rooting for them with the flag planting taunting asshole QB they had before.

Yeah, we went bowling with the kids during the game and the game was on all the TVs.

My wife asked me if I was excited to be getting to watch the game and still bowl and I responded, "Yeah! It's cool. I mean the Seahawks are going to be awful this year, but still."

Right then, I looked up and saw the punt returner drop the ball inside the 5 and then a scramble for the ball with a TD for the Bears.

I turned to her and said, "See?"

I do recognize that it is preseason and they probably aren't playing all their starters, but the Seahawks really do look abysmal.

They can't put Geno Smith out on the field. They just can't.

Watching him try to push the ball downfield when the situation demanded it, he had to really load up and put everything into it just for the ball to limp through the air. I thought Jimmy G had some limitations with downfield throws, but Geno's looked like they were pushing walkers.

The fact that Drew Lock hasn't completely run away with the job, and in fact was QB2 even before catching COVID, doesn't say anything good about what he must look like.

I'm truly mind-boggled that they haven't called up San Francisco like, "we don't like you, you don't like us, hand over Jimmy and keep $8m of his salary, and you can have this 4th round pick". As for the possibility of tanking, well, I'm not convinced the QBs currently expected to lead this draft class are necessarily tank-worthy. Big school guys whose arm power is already being hedged with, "well, not elite, but it's good, really!" are the guys whose shine usually takes a hit once the draft rubber meets the road.
