NFL 2022: The training camp thread

That linebacker that Baltimore cut. That's an unfortunate name. The networks probably make them cut him to avoid an inadvertent Brenneman moment.

Diego was pretty good, but he was a UDFA competing in a pretty deep class. In the end, he lost the competition to Josh Ross, another UDFA who ended up being PFF's highest graded linebacker in preseason football.

The Bucs cut Bug Howard. I don't know anything about him, but I'm inherently sad anybody who goes around by "Bug" is no longer around.

I see Atlanta cut two players I recognize; WRs Geronimo Allison and Auden Tate. How bad do you have to be at playing WR in the NFL if you can't make Atlanta's WR room?

A question for Legion: Who TF is Laviska Shenault and why are the Jags trading him to Carolina?

I know why the Panthers want a WR. Terrace Marshall (Carolina's 2nd-round pick in 2020) is apparently a bust (word is he's about to get cut, if he hasn't already), and Robbie/Robby appears to be more focused on changing his name and uniform number than catching passes.

Drew Lock was such a disaster in preseason game 3 (3 INTs) that the Seahawks immediately turned around and announced Geno Smith as the week 1 starter.

Lock certainly wasn't perfect (1 of those picks was horrendous and on him, another was a great play by the DB, another was right off his WR's hands) but the talent gap between him and Geno is obvious. Lock has the physical tools of a top-10 NFL QB and Geno just... doesn't. My guess is he's starting in a few weeks once he knows the playbook better and Geno struggles a bit.

They both suck. Make an offer for Jimmy already

'No'.

Maybe not the worst idea really.

Oh yeah I didn't read far enough to see the no trade clause. I figured they restricted to maybe ship him still. That's solid backup money

No trade clauses exist solely to allow the player being traded to demand some compensation in exchange for waiving the no trade clause.

That said, probably a waste of money for Seattle. Geno Smith sucks, but he can hand the ball off as well as Jimmy can and that's apparently all Pete Carroll is looking for.

He's a Deebo-style WR-with-rushing-ability that the Jaguars underdeveloped, and he wasn't drafted by Baalke, so he's gotta go.

I wanted the Niners to go get him when Deebo's status was in doubt.

Viska's hands... need work, but he's got untapped ability. Worth a cheap flier.

The Ravens signing Kenyan Drake has me pessimistic about the health of the rest of their veteran RBs. That said, I suspect he is a bit better than his performance in Vegas.

I thought I said something similar here, but I only found it in my Reddit comments:

I’m in favor of waiting until almost the start of the season, cutting him, and offering him a 1yr deal with high backup money. If he wants to take it, great. If he’s got a better option elsewhere, fine, that’s extra cap space to put into a Deebo extension.

Jimmy's deal is in line with Teddy B's $6.5m in Miami. The important thing was freeing up *most* of that original cap figure to put towards a contract extension (the Bosa one now that Deebo's is done).

I agree with this part.

I would not have had a QB battle. Geno has zero upside. If I wasn't going to give the Niners a Jimmy offer that they had to accept, I would have made Lock the starter in spring and not looked back. If he's trash, then I go QB hunting in the draft.

Geno is the worst of the options. Garoppolo would have given them a QB they could compete with if the roster turned out to overachieve. Lock would have given them at least the hope of producing a guy that breaks out. Geno guarantees mediocrity. Here comes 160 passing yards per game, but not too many INTs, so Petey likes it!

Vikings cut Kellen Mond.

Chris Simms should avoid Twitter today.

Thanks for the intel. He seems very large and slow -- sort of a shorter, stockier version of KB13. Maybe they want him for blocking? Can he kick FGs and XPs?

Apparently McAdoo coached him in Jax, so they know what they're getting. I just don't know if the McAdoo offense includes any Deebo-esque plays.

Bills cutting OJ Howard, who, suffice to say, was not the generational TE prospect Bucs fans were hoping for.

Bad new, iantgotnopants; the Bucs are cutting Tyler Johnson free. If any team needs a slow WR who cuts his routes off and can't get open but is good for one or two spectacular plays a year, he's your guy.

Would only be appropriate if Jimmy was traded at the deadline, that's how the Niners got him in the first place.

Getting him on a backup-level contract definitely makes a deadline trade a lot more plausible.

Viska's definitely not a burner, not ideal as an outside receiver. He belongs more in the slot, running jet sweeps and getting YAC after short catches by breaking tackles.

Yeah, I don't know if McAdoo's offense has the creativity for using him, but I'm not surprised that someone who coached him before sees him as a guy that still has untapped potential.

I really hope he breaks out in Carolina, so that I can shove it in the face of other Jaguars fans who are badmouthing him on his way out the door.

EDIT: I hate this but I have to share it.

Feels like this could be a Jags post-cuts signing target. The TE depth chart isn't the utter disaster it has been for the past few years, but it's still not exactly inspiring.

Same. My patience for the Carroll regime has just about ended. Schneider might have saved his job with this year's draft, but it may be time to just clean house and start over.

Alex Leatherwood cut by the Raiders.

Raiders first-round picks from 2019-2021: 2019: DE Clelin Ferrell, RB Josh Jacobs and S Jonathan Abram: 5th-year options declined. 2020: WR Henry Ruggs III & CB Damon Arnette: both waived following off-field incidents. 2021: Alex Leatherwood: Waived after one season.

That is impressive.

Apparently they tried to trade him to themselves, but they said "no" too.

Fool me once . . .

I take it everyone is hitting refresh on their team's roster page.

For sure, though mostly the 49ers one because they have bubble guys that actually could make rosters elsewhere.

Jacksonville, well, will probably have little issue getting guys to clear waivers and sign to the practice squad.

LOL, they cut Sean Mannion too.

"You guys are absolute trash, we'll take Nick Mullens with one week of camp time."

Yeah, that kills me.

Anyway, I hope Sam saves those game checks. They're going to be a lot smaller (and not from Carolina) a year from now.

In unrelated news, the Panthers seem to have gotten the hang of signing players who might actually help (tbd w Viska Shenault and getting rid of players who won't (several sorry draft picks who didn't do jack last year).

He's going to get decapitated, isn't he?
