NFL 2022: The training camp thread

Pages

It's the time before the best time of the year: NFL training camp! Here's the schedule; a few teams are already underway but all veterans have to report by Tuesday.

Hall of Fame game (Jags-Raiders) is Aug 4 (next week!!). Preseason games start Aug 11. There are only three preseason games this year (same as last year; didn't there used to be four?), so adjust your expectations accordingly.

To celebrate the start of training camps, The Athletic is out with its annual QB tiers for 2022 (spoilered for those of you who don't want to read things liberated from the paywall):

Spoiler:

(In order overall)

Tier 1 (a QB who carries his team each week): Rodgers, Mahomes, TB12 The Goat, Josh Allen, Herbert, Burrow.

Tier 2 (a QB who can carry his team sometimes but not as consistently): Stafford, Let Russ Cook, the rapist who now plays for the Browns, Lamar, Dak, Derek Carr, Kyler, the corpse of Matt Ryan

Tier 3 (legit starter who needs help to win): Cousins, Jimmy G, Tannehill, Mac Jones, Mayfield, Hurts/Wentz (tied), Goff, Trevor Lawrence, Jameis

Tier 4 (unproven QB or veteran who won't start all 17 games): Justin Fields, Tua, Davis Mills, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Danny Dimes, Mariota, HEY DARNOLD, Trubisky, Drew Lock

Tier 5 (should be a backup): Geno Smith

Do you think they play cornhole during downtime at training camp?

While I appreciate offseason lists exist to cause enough controversy for them precious clicks, I am somewhat perplexed how Darnold and Drew Lock are "unproven QB or veteran who won't start all 17 games" while Geno Smith is "should be a backup". I mean, we're clearly drawing some lines in sand that has probably been pooped in repeatedly, but I think I'd rather have Geno Smith than Sam Darnold, and that is not a compliment to anybody.

This will be my first time not having a team to root for since 1998. Honestly kinda freeing.

I'm certainly curious about what they're laughing at in the header.

Absolutely no argument from me.

If I remember how it works, Mike Sando assigns the QBs to tiers based on a majority of votes. In other words, a QB who gets more Tier 2 votes than Tier 3 votes ends up in Tier 2. Darnold got 12 Tier 5 votes (out of 50 possible), but it's likely most of the rest were for Tier 4. Geno must have gotten more 5s than 4s.

In the past, I think Sando broke down the 1/2/3/4/5 voting. He mentions some of the votes in the writeups (like 18 Tier 1 votes for Stafford) but I don't the entire tally listed this year.

Looks like Orlando Brown Jr. is holding out

The notion that they might play cornhole during training camp. Or that baseball is a sport.

PS: I am flirting hard with Chargers fandom this year, mostly because I need a Plan B in case HEYDARNOLD starts the year as QB1 in Charlotte.

I'm also curious as to what real QB play looks like. The stuff I saw in the playoffs looked TOTALLY DIFFERENT from what Sam, Cam and PJ did during the regular season games I watched.

The Lamar slander has gone anonymous now I see.

I'm disappointed that the anonymous slanderer wasn't a Reddit user named Pill Bolian.

Minshew selling his bus home. Time for some football!

Kyler Murray's new contract has a homework clause:

The contract defines “Independent Study” to include the study of “the material provided to him by the Club in order to prepare for the Club’s next upcoming game, including without limitation any such material provided via an iPad or other electronic device.” Time spent in mandatory meetings doesn’t count.

The contract specifically includes this sentence: “Player shall not receive any credit for Independent Study with respect to any time periods during which any material is displayed or played on an iPad or electronic device if (a) Player is not personally studying or watching the material while it is being displayed or played or (b) Player is engaged in any other activity that may distract his attention (for example, watching television, playing video games or browsing the internet) while such material is being displayed or played.”

A breach of this term counts as a default under the contract, which would jeopardize his guaranteed money.

Was him not doing this a big of enough issue in the past for them to make it part of a contract extension?

Is Minshew more of a meme or a QB who racks up lots of stats late in games while way behind? Either way, he's entertaining as hell.

He might not ever do it..but if there’s a current backup QB in the league to go on a Foles like 4-5 game run and win a SB it’s Minshew. It would need to be on a good veteran team with experience just like those ‘17 Eagles. But like Foles Minshew can get hot and stay hot for enough games to win a SB.

Danny Playoffs is retiring. If I still lived in Providence, I'd set up a car port in his honor, but instead I'll just say: Edelman in motion, Edelman takes the swing pass, Edelman's gonna throw, deep downfield WIDE OPEN, AMENDOLA, touchdown...

Screw QB tier lists. I want NFL Cornhole player tier lists.

Lamar would be Tier 2 on that list, too.

Seriously, tho, Lamar can't win. Cam got dinged for the same kind of nonsense reasons, and Lamar's a better (definitely) faster version of Cam.

Apparently the issue is that Kyler Murray thinks he has a higher midi-chlorian count than Master Yoda “was blessed with the cognitive skills to just go out there and just see it before it happens."

More like Tier #2.

Spoiler:

Cause of the time he had to poop during a game.

Meanwhile Aaron Rodgers shows up for camp in his Nicholas Cage cosplay (and in slow motion).

This is going to be a wiiiiiiilld season.

He's really going out of his way to try to wash off the clown stench he had from last season.

The Trey Lance era has officially begun in SF, according to multiple sources (aka Twitter).

Shanahan's out here telling reporters that they would have traded Jimmy G in the offseason except for his shoulder surgery.

It's sorta ridiculous how long it has taken everyone outside of the Niners sphere to wrap their heads around it.

Shanahan was running around at the owner's meeting badgering teams about trading for Jimmy. That was back in March.

Then Jimmy was told to keep his ass home during minicamps.

And all of the sudden, NOW people are like, "oh man, it's really happening"?

I won't ever tire of Urban Meyer sh*t talk.

Julio Jones is signing with... Tampa.

Chris Carson is retiring due to his neck injury. He's leaving the door open for an eventual return should health permit in the future, but as things stand now, this looks like the end.

Not too surprising, as the writing has been on the wall for a while, and Seattle drafting Kenneth Walker sure seemed to indicate Carson was on the way out. But still unfortunate.

I f*cking hate this season already.

It's safe to say none of us knows how much he has left in the tank, but, for what this will do to Falcons fans:
